Hello Sam, I am in Canada so kinda hard to find hornby stuff, but I found a hobby shop that does. So I broke down and bought a dcc with sound tornado. Also bought the hornby prairie tank engine. All while I was only there to pick up my new BLI big boy, lol.spent way too much money.

@@SamsTrains It does it is just expensive and exchange kinda blows. Though I saw your news video, I would not purchase a riverossi big boy over Broadway limited. The Broadway is a much better buy for the price.

The Star class or GWR 4000 class were originally gonna have a 4-4-2 wheel configuration for a prototype but then in 1909 they got the 4-6-0 wheel configuration. I love it how as we get to the 3 GWR 4-6-0 locomotives such as the Star, Castle, and King class they seem to get stronger. They went to a 5P, 7P, and 8P which are pretty strong 4-6-0 locomotives. :D

Sam'sTrains i would be careful accepting review items. It’s a psychological effect. And i have experienced people doing me a favour and then expecting out of proportion compensation later on. Be very careful with offerings of review items... You can see the problems in the video game industry with slanted reviews for company favours... Trust is the true value of a KZread channel.

What a beautiful Star class. I have a little 0-4-0 that does the same thing when I run it at half speed. At half speed, the loco is WAY faster than any of my other ones so I have to dial it way back. Is that just because of a strong motor?
@SamsTrains
5 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much Chase! haha yeah I certainly have a few 0-4-0s like that too, haha! It's the gearing and the gear ratios - they've changed the 0-4-0s now so that they're slower, but the old ones are fast as ever! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

I have a totally cast body and chasis model thats going on 65 years old and the only issue I have had which has popped up since my grandpa has had it is that the main gear that the motor spins has cracked due to the weight of the whole model but apart from that its still rocking all the original wheels and even has the original light that hasn't gone out so I whole heartedly believe that models produced way back when had quality and longevity in mind over how well they look but I have to say even though its not the most detailed model these days it just has such a presence about it

I got a Glastonbury Abbey last month for £50 because of some damage to the little piece of plastic that holds sound cables between the Loco and tender. She works perfect and is one of my most powerful steam locos. My only criticisms are: the tender angle and footplate as mentioned in this video.

I have now bought the same model. Mine came with damage. Smokebox dart and a footrest from the back of the tender were in the bottom of the box. Managed to glue them back. Got mine for £109.50 new. Appears to have been damaged in transit.

So sorry to hear that Paul - yes mine didn't arrive in a satisfactory condition either. Shouldn't have to be fixing models of course, glad to hear you were able to repair them though! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
When you said to take a long look at the tender I immediately paused the video to look for the crack you mentioned earlier, and noticed the whole thing did seem to lean back before you mentioned anything about it, meaning my brain wasn't primed to look for it or anything, so either it's real or we've both gone mad! Definitely doesn't take away from it as much down on the track though. Also, you showing your Triang shelf gave me a bit of an idea for a short running session. How about doing a sort of timeline of your models? I know you've done a series based on the age of the real locos but I mean the age of the models themselves; start with one of your oldest and then one from every 5-10 years until present day. You could do your favorite overall from each time period, or it could also be fun to pick a similar engine (maybe something like an A3 or A4?) from each timeframe to see the evolution of the detail and performance. I had a few basic Bachmann sets when I was quite young and you're really making me want to get back into this hobby, but I certainly can't afford it right now. Guess I'll just have to keep watching your videos. Cheers!

I just got one of these from Kernow for £129.99. These days, that's excellent value for a large tender engine with 21st-century detail standards and some modern features. Is it worth the current RRP of £217.99? Absolutely no way: for that price, I would expect a die-cast running plate; a firebox glow; a 21-pin or NEXT18 decoder socket (as opposed to the 8-pin); and all the other bells and whistles that this model doesn't have. I don't think it's laughable to expect your new locomotive to last a lifetime. I also have a few 40 year old models that work as well as the day that they were made. Annoying as firstly, now I've seen this I want one soooooo bad! But luckily I want one in GW Green as hattons are doing, secondly, I'm still yet to see 4003 Lose Star as Both my trips to the NRM she was at Swindon, and when I went to Swindon she was at the NRM! As a side point will you at anytime soon do a review on the Hornby County 1000 Class (the 4-6-0 2 cylinder county). (Did see it in the sidinga but sure if there is a review?) What people don't really know about the GWR Stars is that they are not 2 cylinder like many locos at the Time, they are four cylinder! Hence their power and high speed, plus helped by the massive driving wheels! About Hornby As James Mays program showed Simon Kohlar is doing good! The tender is wonky However I would prefer to get a star currently, only because I already have they cheap But amazing hall!

I am a bit... I keep finding space for new shelves though! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
27:10, It has to blue one, all the rest are GWR green, also, 1909? For some reason it makes me think 1926, maybe the look of it.

Counties : 30 Manors. : 30 Grange. : 80 Castle. : 179, 16 rebuilt from Stars, 1 used components from the Great Bear Hall. : 179, 1 rebuild from a Saint Modified Halls : 71 King. : 30 The GWR locos had very much a uniform appearance, this was in part in not going through pain of the 1923 grouping that saw a great deal change in other companies (LMS, LNER & SR). The second was that the GWR did a great deal of work in two principle areas of loco design. First was the boiler design, where the GWR used a lot of data from the Pennsyvannia Railroad, the PRR went on to build one of the most remarkable steam passenger engine, the K4 4-6-2. The second area was the valve gear, the GWR purchased three 4-4-2 French locomotives, again learning a great deal in how changes in the valve gear design increased speed as well as efficiency. The lessons learnt on the French locos by the GWR was later transferred to the North Eastern in their A1 pacifics, that later went forward to the A3's and A4s

What's a "water scoop"
@SamsTrains

It allows a tender to pick up water while they travelled! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
poor hawkings bizzare, i think they used to sell solo loco's but then stopped and only sold sets or at least the store in cambridge grafton center did i think it was the 0-6-0 shunter set, the virgin diesel with maching coaches and the flying scotsman set, shame there gone as they used to also sell those oxford lil model cars in sets,

Ahh yes you're right - I remember seeing those for sale there! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
quite right the tender looks very wrong. perhaps they are trying to make the front of it meet the elevated fall plate

Would you prefer the star, grange or the hall class in terms of their designs and personalities?
@SamsTrains

Ooh tricky - I think it'd be the Hall for me! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Is it just me Or is the hall, king, star, and castle class are the same shape??
@davidstrains4910

Wow that's quite a lot - hope you had a great time! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
in my own opinion I think that a model that has a tie cast body gains so much more patina than one with a plastic body with a factory done weathering job
@SamsTrains

This particular one is just plastic - but Hornby sometimes do die-cast them! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
