There are some things that just bring a smile to my face anytime I do them. One of those things is driving at the Tamiya USA test facility in California. I have not been able to go there for the last two years and it has really bummed me out. However, I recently received a box from the man in the brown truck that made it necessary to head out there. I tossed the packing material here and there until I unveiled the bounty at the bottom of the box-the M05 Mini Cooper.
The M05 is a variation of Tamiyas successful M03 chassis. Like that car, the M05 features a front-mounted motor, however, the servo has been relocated to the rear of the chassis. The M05 can also be built in a short, mid-, or long wheelbase configuration to accommodate your personal driving style and what body youd like to run. With a fully charged Li-Po, I boarded the airplane and headed west to put the M05 through its paces.

    @Dets6 Yes, those shocks will work and those springs will fit right on there. I was trying to look up the stock 05 v2 Shock's P/N and the description wasn't obvious. I thought what I listed was the shock but the CVA mini shocks will work well. There's also the super-dialed TRF Aluminum shocks too :)

    @Dets6 I had to think about this one for a minute. I forgot that this came with friction shocks. I actually used the kit shocks from my TA-05 v2 since I used TRF shocks on there. 50598 I think is the P/N but the ones you listed will work very well.

    @xrayracer1 I totally agree. The M03 had a higher CG, a lot of it was due to the servo placement being very high comparatively. I finished 3rd in Mini at the Novak Race one year and the only reason I didn't finish higher is that I couldn't keep from traction rolling.

  • @horizonhobby
    @horizonhobby12 жыл бұрын

    @xrayracer1 You can put the aluminum TRF shocks on if you'd like, the one thing is the bodies of the TRF shocks are a little longer. That means you'll get a little less suspension travel and have to add another 1-2mm of spacers under the piston to reduce ride height.

    @traindude95 Yes they are. The only changes were to springs, oil, tires and inserts. Now for the M-chassis class Tamiya has gone to a premounted tire so that helps to eliminate one piece of the tuning puzzle.

    Thicker oil or heavier springs is not always the correct fix to traction rolling. Sometimes softening your suspension can alleviate traction rolling issues. If your suspension is too stiff it can't do it's job. Another thing you can do is add anti-roll bars, this will help a lot too. Finally a tire change would help too. Going with a firmer front tire will definitely help.

    I drove mine on carpet with those tires and it got so much traction from the compound that was already on the carpet, that it just rolled over in every turn.... smearing black tire residue all over my nice white Cooper top.

    One of the main things i love about my m05 is that there is no traction roll, when i would put "sticky" tires on my old m03 it would always traction roll no matter what changes i would make to the set up.

    You can as the packs I was using were LiPo. The main thing is you'll need to use "rounded" packs, meaning packs that replicate the look of a 6-cell NiMH "Stick" pack to fit in the chassis.

    yeah thats true. i didnt think of anti-roll bars. i was just thinking of those rtr short course trucks that have exessive body roll. i'll admit that short course trucks are'nt my forte', i've just finished building my factory team sc10.

    The biggest problem with the M05 is the steering setup. There's a lot of play and there's even some binding on the left-hand bellcrank that causes the car to feel very darty and makes you feel like you're always overcorrecting. The aftermarket aluminum steering systems eliminate this and turn the car into a whole different animal.

    @HorizonRCdotCom I'll admit i have the m05 PRO, so it comes with a lot of the "go fast" bits that you showed in the review, but i must admit i'm not a real fan of the clear oil shocks, they seem brittle. Is it possible to fit the TRF 416/417 threaded shocks to it or will it be an awkward fit?

    Which wheel base should be uaed when building the m05ra chassis kit, which includes the yellow suzuki swift 1600??? The manual says there are 3 wheelsbase setups. But it does NOT mention WHICH one should be used for THIS CAR. Tamiya's website doesnt even mention it. Kind of odd. I guess I can just measure the wheel base of the body but the manual doesnt mention the LENGTH of the 3 wheel base options. Ridiculous!!!Are we supposed to just pick one of the wheelbasea, assemble, and hope it fits? BTW, building this kit takes more than a couple of hours.

    Okay after buying myself one for Christmas, i finally built it and have got it running. I do however have a brushless motor and it hits about 45mph. I noticed with all of that extra power it wheelspins if i pin it on start off and there is loads of understeer when cornering on power. I noticed you said something about anti roll bars. I put it mostly down to stock tires and the stock friction suspension. I have a full ball bearing conversion too. So any advice to make it handle better? I love the characteristics of the cornering but i don't want that much scale authenticity. Also, i have it on the short wheelbase. I tried the body and it looked like i could do with going up to medium. Did you have to do that?

    If you're looking at TCS racing all of the classes except one, the Spec/Rookie class, have gone to brushless motors. Regarding tuning parts they're optional. Tamiya also has their TRF line of race vehicles that, while more expensive on the front end, include just about all the option parts you'd want in one box.
