Just maidened mine. The intent was after increasing throw to go down the runway and see if she would track stright and then stop. Well she took right off. So easy when you have rudder control tracking her straight. I have the original release and the gear doors were very stiff and brittle. They both popped on landing. Easy fix with your demonstration! Thanks Brian.

I'm an Aerospace Engineer. The CG is measured from the leading edge of the wing at the root. The root is the portion of the wing touching the body. This is a straight-line distance, not curved as in over the wing chord.

Hey Brian, Jeff Here!!! Haven't flown the Ranger 1220 yet, because of weather. But With the Huricane on us, I decided to start this Build and had it all done and ready to Fly in less than one day!!! Little confused at first with the binding and having safe activited, using an NX10, but with your help, got all the little bugs out. And as an added feature, have all the switches with Audio descriptions and settings. Thanks again for everything... Jeff

Purchased one Brian, and from your master link to HH. Thanks for the effort (both of you) to put out these instruction videos. Sadly, it arrived DOA with a loose pin on the fuselage side of the aileron connector. No ailerons or cool lights... I am just so glad the loose pin did not make enough contact to fool me, then punish me in the air. I’d have had a nasty crash and probably never known the reason why, so here is a tip for others who get this model: Do what Brian did and test all those connections with a servo driver. I love the one built into the battery checker. As for the connection from Fuselage to wing and anywhere there are pins (as opposed to sockets), push gently on the pins with a toothpick or some such, and check that they don’t slide back into the connector or wobble about. OK, so that’s disappointing, but here’s the good part. After the mildly annoying process of using the contact form to get the process started, and the also frustrating delays in communication due to a busy tech support department, they got back to me, reviewed the description and photos I sent on the phone, and immediately put in an order for the connector and screw I needed to effect the repair. Those parts arrived FedEx yesterday. I’ve yet to fix and fly it but felt ready to post an important data point, and here it is. Brian often raves about Horizon’s support, but honestly, and don’t be insulted Brian, you have to take that with a bit of skepticism. People who are sponsored by, or have financial relationships with, or are provided products to review, often get support that the general populace will never experience. I know this not just as a suspicion, but as a fact. I founded Measurement Computing Corp and we had flags for large and influential customers. Who wouldn’t? A customer who represents a chunk of your income, or has the reach to burn your reputation, is a customer that is going to get special treatment. I have no idea if Brian does, but one has to wonder. Well, with regard to Horizon Hobby I’m not wondering anymore. The support from Horizon is great, they’ve been great to me, and I don’t mean a damn thing to Horizon beyond being a regular customer. So that’s my endorsement. I hope you experience the same great support I have.

Thanks for the comment Brendrix, and firstly, sorry you had a bad pin!!! I understand yours and other's skepticism. You have to remember that before I was working with Horizon Hobby, I was in the exact same boat. I've JUST last week, called to ask for a motor on my little UMX A-10...one of the leads melted on ONE of the motors! Easy diagnostics, and then a couple pictures later (that weren't even asked for) and I had the part in the mail a couple days later. I need to install it, and it's a pain in the butt to have to deal with this, but it'll be made right. I've been in arguments to the point of wanting to pull my hair out with Hobbyking, and a few other select companies (I even had at least ONE like this at HH - but we kissed and made up, interestingly enough!). A lot of the issues experienced in RC Hobby originate from operator error (I'm included) so the hobby companies have an uphill battle deciphering if the customer want free parts, or if they had a problem that was caused by them, the MFG...which is tough, but HH is one of the best if things don't go perfectly. I've had good luck with a few other companies, don't get me wrong, but I've had terrible luck with others. Ultimately, I'm as cheap, and hard headed as they come. I generally fight until I get what I need, while many will roll over too easy, or others come on WAY too strong and prompt a defensive "No" from companies. At the end of the day, I need people to know that if they do everything right, and even if they do some things wrong, Horizon Hobby will be one of the best at being there to make it right. They might say no once in a while, but I might be fudging a bit once in a while...there it is ;) Glad you're getting this beauty airborne soon! P.S. One last tip - Keep the thing from ground looping to death - keep her on her mains as long as you can on landing! Good luck!

You are by far the best RC pilot I have seen on KZread and your reviews are right on. I have been flying the HH P51 D for a few months now and still haven't mastered the landings yet. Hard main gear wheels is part of the problem, but I have learned to soften the landings by touching down on one wheel first. Try it sometime it really does work with this plane. Had my Maiden yesterday! Flies wonderfully! However: I had the same issues as you: • One of the retract strut covers broke on my first flight only they didn't give me any spare ones!!! Currently trying to sort that out with Horizon now. • That 3mm of down elevator is nonsense. If it wasn't for safe mode my first flight would have been really hairy. Mechanically put the elevator level for the second flight and BAM. Perfect level flight. Flew like an absolute dream. Like the 1.2 June Nite but with a much firmer stance in the sky. Flies on rails. • Ground control: What ground control!!!!! You cannot keep this thing in a straight line! Learned that you have to very slowly increase throttle for take off, and abandon take offs if it shows any sign of straying off path. All small things though really. I consider my first two flights a massive success. Got a little work to do on my dual rates and expo. I followed both your settings for this and also referred back to your settings for 1.2m June Nite and decided for something halfway in between. Worked out that I want to soften the ailerons, but not rudder or elevator, so I think I'll just put more expo on ailerons on my mid rates and fly on mid rates all the time. Once I get comfortable with a plane I don't really use different rates, they are just good for the first few flights till you are sorted. Thanks for these videos I just wouldn't know what to do without them! Gonna buy a Viper next so the other night I watched all your viper videos!!!!

Hi Brian, I struggle with take off on this P-51D. It has such power that it torques on take off! It is an awesome plane to fly with really outstanding colour and is very striking. I fly at a designated flying zone in Aus and families stop to watch because of this plane. CG is always critical but in this plane I find that the stall zone is deadly if the CG is not perfect. A really long landing strip is also good LOL

I'm glad to hear this, as I too have had a heck of a time with ground handling. It's like spray and pray ground handling...you give her hell and hope she'll transition from the tail wheel to the rudder authority in time, but before you know it, you're in the air and flying!!! Landings are very sketchy, I could drive it down the block on the mains, but as soon as I try to drop the tail wheel, it's just a total guessing game!

Been flying this warbird in Realflight 9.5 and even though I land it 100% of the time, it was impossible to do without bouncing it like you did. Took lots of practice to get to land smoothly without the bounce. It’s hard to master, but I’m working on it, still only landing it without a bounce 1 out of 4 landings. The key is about 1/3 throttle with full flaps as I shallow glide down and cutting throttle just before the wheels touch. Hardest plane to land smoothly in Realflight for me so far.

Are you talking about the tail or one of the main wings??? If you're having trouble, you need to look into the alignment of the connectors. Take a servo extension cable and drape it between the connectors and make sure they connect. If they do, now test the wing....are all the servos working? Was one backward??? Get some more information about if it was capable of alignment. Also, If I'm not mistaken, can you just pull out the wing connector plugs and see if they'll go into each other? If not, that's your issue.

I'm talking about the main wing installation, it seems like the servo pins on the fuselage are slightly out of alignment and I'm not sure how I can fix that. It's also really hard to see the alignment on this thing. I'm thinking to take out the wing connector plugs, try and see if they go into the fuselage, and then stuff them back into the wing again. I was watching RC informer's assembly video and he seemed to have the same problem that I did with the wing installation, but he bent the servo pins somehow and got it to work, which I'm sure I would stuff up some how.

I understand totally the price point concerns you have, especially if you also need to buy a $110 SMART battery too!!! ...BUT it's a beauty, and so many well done features. This is not like the disappointment that was the EC-1500, and that too was quite expensive. This plane is just well done on all fronts. BUT it's not the easiest P-51 I've ever flown...that being said, it's for sure the most capable, and biggest. I know my nerves are playing a part in this, since it's a long awaited, and expensive plane ;) When I get more comfortable with it, I'll be taking off and landing from my driveway. P.S. I must also say that I don't even take advantage of one of the best features of this plane...it's transportability. It comes apart easy, and quick, something that many people NEED.

LOL - everyone else gets one before me :(... I'm so glad to have it!!! I can say one thing...and don't kill me for saying it...I think the 1.2m is almost as enjoyable to fly. It's a lot easier, and less expensive, and almost as awe striking. I think the pucker factor on this beauty is still strong. Maybe after a few more flights, I'll be more at ease. I can say that I've flown the 1.2m Blondie at full speed in very close proximity AT NIGHT more than a time or two, but I was very used to that plane, and it has seen a LOT of life! That being said, this plane is Awesome!

I was leaning toward the DX8 with future aircraft needs in mind. As far as being obsessed I am a retired airline pilot and airplanes have been in my blood for 50+ years. I have watched the RC hobby for much of that time but it was usually too expensive or difficult until now. Your videos moved me to jump in first with the mini Trainstar and then the Sport Cub 500. Been having fun [and crashes] with the Sport Cub. The Turbo Timber looks like a fun step up to improve skills with for a while. Really like that P-51 though!!! I cut the wing off the Sport Cub last night and it looks like the elevator servo arm was rotated 180 degrees and impacting the rudder servo arm. Jammed. Don't have any idea how that happened.

Glad to hear you found the issue with the servo. I figured you were bound up. If it fails to work again, there's a gear inside that micro servo that's broken. I’ll be going to watch your video on it for like the 5th time and I’ll comment on it if I have any questions because I know you’ll have the best answer!👍👍👍. Thanks for the info! I may have missed something but it looked like all you needed to do was raise your alarm voltage setting equal to or higher than actual battery voltage to initiate the telemetry alarm. Did you ever get the alarm to work? Thanks for sharing that beautiful mustang with us!

Brian, I ordered mine the first day of release and have been flying ever since, the outer gear doors are definitely an issue, very fragile under-sized pins, I would love for you to come up with a very durable solution to repair or modify the outer gear doors. I have probably gone through seven or eight sets that break in the air. I'm conscious they are fragile and do my best not to deploy whenever the plane is moving fast, just a little gust of wind will snap them off. You are very clever with coming up with modifications and fixes, so let's see what you come up with :-)

  • @1stMarine

@@BrianPhillipsRC Unfortunately the drift landings are very common with this bird, not so much with my FMS 1450 P-51D, many pilots have the same problem and also experience landing bounce, the trunnions are also brittle and fragile, made of cast metal, another weak spot. I believe the big prop adds some ground-effect adding to it being tricky to land. The hard tires add to the bounce, these are just some items for future modification by the factory. This P-51 is all new and there will be some things to improve, I would still highly recommend, what an awesome airplane :-)

  • @BrianPhillipsRC

    @BrianPhillipsRC

    2 жыл бұрын

Here's where I would start... Are they plugged in at the Rx? If ONE of the two are plugged in backward, they will NOT work. See if you can trace back to where the "Y" splitter is, and see if you can find if both are color for color. Also, on THIS plane, if memory serves, pull one or the other wing and then pull the other wing off and you can accomplish the same trouble shooting...when and if ONE side works, you'll know that side is CORRECT, and the OTHER side, that DIDN'T work, would be incorrect. Then you can chase down the problem inside the wing or the Fuselage. OR, you can take out the wire going to the ailerons, and just plug in a servo, or something easy to see and verified good, like the ELEVATOR....does it move? Then you're port is good...then move on.

I managed to fix it but I don't know if it will hold. i try to contact the seller (it's not horizonhobby) for a plane replacement but it seems ignore me.... PS : XBC100 serve me very well....
