The sheer force of this performance, the indomitable rage that oozes from every syllable defines the commitment of this performer. Not to mention the way the lyrics are imbued with a very real pain, not just of performance, but of experience. Here is a man pouring his very soul into his art, drawing on what is no doubt his 'own brooding potential' to transmit something that needs to be more than spoken, something that has to be felt. It is this immeasurable 'something' that makes a good man great.

Has everyone here listened to the lyrics properly? He reveals that he's never giving up "hope" that he might be able to finally successfully kill himself. I'm surprised there's a few people saying this isn't very clever, or good. It's a pretty superb paradox.

That damn ending was superb.

Some people commenting that this is less edgy and more straightforward than his usual stuff: I don't think it's a spoiler to say that within the context of the musical, this is actually about Phil Connors repeatedly trying to commit suicide (only to wake up the next day, every day). So Tim has taken the vocabulary of a typical inspirational ballad and twisted it round a dark subject matter. Also there's a neat Dorothy Parker reference in there!

I went back after reading your comment and tried to identify exactly what made me think of Collins and all I can say is upon rewatching, I got serious goosebumps. This must have been intentional? I saw the show with my wife. I wasn't sure what to expect since I love the movie so much, but we were both very pleasantly surprised. It was a great show.

As much as I like Tim Minchin succeeding in the musical scene, I want him to release another album.... :(

This is amazing. Is my sneaky suspicion, that Tim delivers a much more emotional version here than the version which was performed on stage in the musical, warranted? I've only seen clips of the UK/Broadway versions, but they don't seem to have the raw emotion of Tim's performance. Very sad that it was cancelled. It's about suicide attempts. Listen closely to the lyrics, especially at the end. Phil's trapped in an endless cycle and losing it. "Faith" refers to his way out.

France voted to remain in Europe, because they have faith in it, and they hope for a better future with it. They could have also given up hope, and voted with fear instead, leaving the EU and closing off their borders to foreigners. One isn't necessarily better or worse than the other. But the left vote is one based stronger on hope, so it's just more relevant to this video. I think saying "hope won for France" isn't some virtue signal, it's not claiming that hope is better. It's just a statement that hope won, because a vote to remain in the EU, and remain open to foreigners and other religions, is a vote based on hope. Just my 2 cents though, you could look at it a different way. And you could see it as a virtue signal, it's all down to your perspective really...
