Hayden Jacob i was gonna say a panhard bar. A lot of performance car around that time had them. They are there to keep the body moving side to side whil over the axle. Kinda like how a sway bar handles body roll this handles the side motion when going around a corner.

I just have to say rob is probably one of the most inspirational people. He's paralyzed and he's doing things like a normal person, he's even doing even better than the normal person. That center brace is a Power Plant Frame. Keeps the trans/diff up without a crossmember.

maybe, maybe not. the shit car overhaul they did to it fixed a lot of issues. if they cleaned up the wiring it would probably pass seeing as the engine is pretty much stock

it locks the diff making both wheels spin at the same time, if you had an open diff and were to try to do a burnout or something, only one wheel would spin

Locking a differential or welding one locks both axles together. Making both tires spin at the same rate. Essentially turning an open or slip diff into a pozy rearend. Like i said, making tires spin at the same rate. Giving the car the ability to break traction with both tires and do donuts. In an open or slip diff, when one tire loses traction, the other tire doesnt. Giving a "one wheel peal". Or a "one-tire-fryer". Meaning no donuts lol. Hope this helped. Theres much more to it, but that is the overall idea.

It's commonly known among the miata community that if the diff cover is smooth (like on your miata), then it's an open diff. The factory LSDs have cooling fins on the cover. There are also other tiny details to look at such as axles (a;sp varies on generations), but i wouldn't expect you guys to know that since you are new to Miatas. And yes it is a Power Plant Frame or PPF.
