The moment you think you have kikawa figured out...you dont. he is the most interesting man In the world.

I owned a 1990 NA just like this one. Best thing you can do that will bring the torque band way down and allow the ass end to swing is advance the timing to 14*-16* BTDC. Then run 93 octane and you will see a considerable difference in how the power comes on. Easily the cheapest and relatively simple modification to do that costs mostly time and energy! Thanks for letting me relive all the fun memories I had in mine vicariously through Daily Transmission!!

darius2640 Nah it's got a bad motor. Even with the heavy ass stock flywheel it should respond better than that when just revving. You can also hear it struggling when he revs it. Those Miata motors are just shit all around.

OhKey! Miata motors aren't shit lol. That thing is probably just beat to death. My miata can do burnouts all day on stock power and it was a 1.6. It can do donuts with no issues. Now that its pushing 12 psi on a td04 turbo its amazing.

Polar Films I didn't say they couldn't do burnouts, but they are garbage. Miata motors are brittle, you beat on them and they eat themselves. They're not meant for it, they were designed as a woman's car for getting groceries and running errands; same tasks the 240 was designed for. Sure there are some good motors out there, but in general Miata motors (especially the 1.6) are paperweights and lawn ornaments.

OhKey! That's completely wrong, my little 1.6 hits redline at least once every time I drive it. Last time I checked the head looked like it was brand new. It is still going strong on 12 pounds of boost being beat on even more. Handles anything I do to it like a champ. Transmission takes it super well too. These little engines run forever and hold up to a lot of abuse.

Polar Films As I just stated; *there are some good engines in the bunch.* 1.6's do blow often, even if you try to say not. there are hundreds of thousands of forum posts about people blowing them and tens of thousands KZread videos of people blowing them. I have a 97 GT with a 2v 4.6 going strong at 270k, boosted for the past year, and I beat it daily and have done so for the past 3 years. I even drifted the car for a while, no issues. Even my shitty T-45 is still holding up. My Vortech is on 8psi and I haven't even blown a head gasket. It's been sat on redline for whole runs at a time (6K in 4th, runs lasted about a minute and a half) and all I've done is fowl O2's. _So trust me, I know that there are good engines in the batch. But in general the Mazda 1.6/1.8 are garbage._
