Hookah Foil vs HMD - What’s the difference? | Fumari

Today, we will be going over two of the most common forms of heat management -- hookah foil and heat management devices, or HMDs. Both, when used correctly, produce a great quality smoke, but each has their pros and cons.
#1: COST. A quality HMD may cost around $50, which can be a steep investment if you’re just starting out with a new setup, but it will last you years of use.
On the other hand, hookah foil will run you just a few dollars which should supply enough for 50 sessions or more.
#2: PREPARATION. If you’re looking for simplicity, an HMD completely replaces foil and saves time. Just add the coals, set it and forget it!
Foil requires more time and skill to wrap a bowl and meticulously punch holes. Yet, you can always spend a little more money on specialty hookah foil that is pre-poked for convenience.
#3: COAL MAINTENANCE. This is where an HMD shines. Its purpose is not only to replace foil but also to minimize maintenance. You will only need to adjust your coals a few times throughout the session-mostly when they need to be ashed.
Because charcoal creates hot spots on foil, you will have to adjust them periodically to keep your smoke cool. Another reason you’ll be moving around your coals on foil is that they “black out” after some time and will need to be flipped to a hotter side.
#4: HEAT MANAGEMENT. With an HMD, it’s as simple as adjusting the lid from open to closed to add or remove heat. If it’s still too hot, you can remove the lid completely.
With foil, it’s a little more work to fix a “hot” bowl. You may need to take off a coal or two entirely and perform hookah CPR. Even then, your bowl may not recover.
#5: COALS PER SESSION. HMDs do an excellent job of keeping your coals protected on all sides and ensuring a longer life span, meaning you will use less coals altogether.
With foil, you are always at the mercy of your smoking environment. A strong fan indoors or a light breeze outdoors is all it can take to throw off your heat management, which will use your coals up much faster.
#6: CLEAN UP. With an HMD, it’s not so convenient. Not only do you have to wait for the HMD to cool down, but you might have to scrub off any tobacco that is stuck to the bottom before you can use it again.
When it comes to the end of your session with foil, you can just toss it away.
-------------
So what’s the right type of heat management for you? Well, as we said, both forms have their pros and cons. HMDs will use less coal and save you on time, but you lose some of that pride that goes into traditional hookah preparation. With foil you use more charcoal and there is more preparation, but the cleaning time can’t be beat.
Let us know which method you prefer in the comments and until next time, smoke on Fumari Family!

I've been smoking hooka for years, but I'm completely new about HDM and I'm curious to learn more to understand if it's something I want to try. Thanks for the very clear comparison with pros and cons of both ways. What about combining them both to prevent tobacco to stick underneath the HDM?

This video kind of felt like an SNL infomercial skit for Kaloud. I spent $100+ on the Samsaris bowl and the Lotus HMD used here and believe it a significant step backward in quality of experience compared to a clay bowl and foil. I also found I used MORE coals and more shisha for a shorter session. Two coco nara coals in that setup consistently failed to produce any mentionable smoke after 20 MINUTES of wait. It never does start hitting well until a third coal, then it scorches the shisha even if you are lucky enough to be able to open the vents and continue to get smoke. I wanted to love the Kaloud setup. I tried so hard to like it. I hate it.

Congrats on the upgrade! That is a great question. You can use the still hot HMD on a new bowl but if doing so make sure you have a good grasp of it with your tongs to prevent it from falling and causing injury and/or burns to your surroundings.

Foil is fine, just make sure to always use a grill with it (like a metal nesh you put on top so that your charcol does not turn black due to durectly sitting on the foil)

You can use the apple on top provost with foil but this is the only HMD we recommend using both with. Most HMDs are meant to replace foil but if you are enjoying it keep it up! :)

Holy shit I bought the same HMD today and I keep watching tutorials and tips. I have 3 questions tho: 1. Since HMD replaces foil and it's put directly on top of the bowl without foil isn't it easier for the ash from the coals to fall into the tobacco? 2. If I put both foil and HMD wouldn't it be safer for the tobacco to be protected from the ashes? 3. The guy who sold me the HMD told me to warm the HMD on the stove just before I turn around the coal or lift them up from the stove. Is that correct or should I leave the coal to warm up the HMD? I would be really happy if you answer as I am a newbie at hookah overall. Thanks in advance and a great video.

About the concern with ash falling through, just make sure to periodically ash your coals and also use good quality coconut coals that produce lower ash content. Then, this shouldn't be an issue and there is not need to add foil. It's not recommended by the manufacturer (Kaloud) to warm up the Lotus on a burner but many do to speed up the process of warming up the bowl and to prevent coals from blacking out (which was more of an issue with the Lotus 1 but not with the Lotus 1+ since it was improved with raised ridges for airflow where the coal sits). If you do decide to warm it up, most people only place it on the burner for a minute or less.

You can get prepared foil for hookah at a smoke shop or just buy aluminum foil at any store like Walmart and prepare it yourself. Both options are anywhere from a few bucks to 10 or 15 dollars. And go for the heavy duty foil.
