Nah, hook grip let’s me hold a) basically infinite weight and b) hold the weight a lot lower further reducing range of motion. Definitely has clear benefits if youre taking advantage of it correctly

You can hold the weight lower no matter the grip tf you mean

@@OMAR-vk9pi Nope. With hook grip the bar will kinda naturally be more on your fingers, than your palm. Thus, letting you reach the bar marginally sooner.

mixed grip started to *feel* unbalanced during DLs once i got used to straps. experimenting with oly lifting only further pushed my preference for hook grip lol
FWIW - After 2 shoulder surgeries in '21, I feel far better training with double overhand deads instead of mixed grip. The lat engagement from using a double overhand grip (like Bart speaks to) allows the whole movement to feel better on my shoulders. I'm just starting to work on hook grip now because I don't like using straps every time I go heavy.

If you tape your thumbs it feels a lot better. Hook grip blew up my deadlift because using straps always messes up my set up
I’m glad Bart touched on how mix grip feels weird during sumo. I can comfortably use mix grip during conventional but not with sumo. Hook grip feels very natural and I feel like i can get better positioning
This was such a good video. Hit everything and made me feel like all things have a purpose!

Mike always tries to talk over him, kinda annoying low key
Spicy episode, could feel some tension in this one😊
I have used a kind of hook grip for pull-ups in the past. While I had bicep/forearm tendinitis it allowed me to be able to do more pull-ups before the tendinitis came about.
Explain Jamal’s hook gripping 1,000 for double lol

that shit hurts my thumb
That ending killed me lmao
3:40 Bart literally covered on what I was thinking when using mixed grip on sumo. My supinated arm feels very tucked next to my big boobs which feels very weird and that I can’t feel the lat engagement.
I like hook grip and at my best have pulled 585 and 545x5 with it. I just like the way it feels. I think hand and finger shape/size have a lot to do with how it feels for you.
When I mix grip the supinated hand causes me to windmill/the barbell gets away from me. That's why I experiment with hook grip
Mixed grip fucked my lower back up (I've always been prone to lower back injuries, even prior to lifting). I've had way less back pain just using straps or hookgrip. I don't pull more with it, it just helps me go longer without back issues.

I couldn't focus on the discussion because I was mirin' Mike's Quads and Hammies. However, I switch back and forth with my grip. If my biceps are not happy, then I'll do hook grip. I'm usually more comfortable with it.
I personally can't fathom a reason why I would train hook grip instead of just using straps for double overhand Deadlifts.
On my first powerlifting meet, I saw heavier lifters putting on J&J baby powder all over their thighs I didn’t really understand why until I started Sumo, my inner thighs got scraped and I felt like hair on my thigh got waxing. But imagine using baby powder all over the things in regular day public gym!
So many people think mixed grip immediately equals bicep tear.
All Mike's arguments are basically : Yea it is more secure but also it doesn't matter
Bart, is there a way to eliminate muscle imbalances from deadlifting mixed grip? Thanks.

yes, switch up during each lift. or each set. however you structure your deadlift workouts.

Switch around the mixed grip until you seem balanced. After that, start regularly doing 50/50 on mixed grip, like 50% left hand overhand and 50% left hand underhand on the bar

I do my deadlifts from a dead stop, so I reset my grip between each rep and switch grip sides. Stops me bouncing the weight and helps mix it up.
Powerlifting is just weightlifting accessory work
I've got small hands/fingers so hook grip is out of the question for me, I'll just stick to my straps lol
hook grip is worth it even if sub optimal just for less chance to pull my bicep
No one is perfectly symmetrical but to aim to be as symmetrical as possible might be an okay idea
They should just allow straps for deadlifting what’s the problem
What about the Rusty Hook?💥💥💥🚀🚀💪🏽
He literally proved his answer wrong about hook grip.
Everyone knows the superior grip is double underhand.
Am i the only person that thought... what is hook grip?...
powerlifting hookgrip and oly hookgrip aren't really the same thing.
I love how both Mike and Nadeem sit in a pose which showcases their lack of external hip rotation, which just proves they’re real powerlifters 😂
There are many reasons why hook grip is superior. He is spending all this time trying to make the argument that it won't magically increase your pull so it isn't worth it. Hook grip is a more technical technique that requires practice to perfect, but it does absolutely have benefits to competitive powerlifters, hence why it is used by the majority of people. 1. Balance is improved. The bar isn't wind milling. Your muscles are contracting symmetrically. Your balance improves. 2. Improved leverages. Mixed grip is a supinated hand actually decreases your effective arm length. It may only be by 1/2", but it's still the case. Hook grip generally also means the bar is wedged in the lowest part of your hand, with only the thumb, index and middle finger being used. This also effectively adds another 1/2" of leverage. 3. The risk of bicep tear is eliminated. You might complain and say that it's rare and that anyone who has ever torn a bicep deadlifting was doing it wrong, and didn't have straight arms. But that's simply not the case. It's a freak accident and it absolutely can happen during a max effort movement with a straight supinated arm. 4. If you master the technique, you can effectively hold onto far more weight than you would be able to with mixed grip. People that use mixed grip often weigh significantly more than someone like Jamal, Grisby, Kristof or Cailer. This whole video sounded like you just had a hissy fit against hook grip either because you didn't take the time to learn it properly, or it hurt too much. The argument about small hands also doesn't really work for the most part. I'm 5'7" with reasonably small, but also stocky hands. Very short thumbs. Yet I still found a way to hook grip effectively. Likewise, far smaller women have also done so successfully.

Mike is too dismissive. That said, hook grip isn't magic.
My mixed grip is so much better than double overhand. The bar always rolls out using double overhand.
