Hoof Trimming

How hoof trimming is done on our farm. We do a group every 4 weeks or so, every cow gets a trim once a year.

Your hoof trimmer is so calm and quiet, cows calm and quiet. I admire the way you and your father move your cows with body language and quiet voices. They are lucky cows.

A lucky cow would be living it’s life as a pet out in a huge pasture, but I have to agree he does treat his cows well and I thank him for that. Many farmers aren’t so nice.

A lucky cow would be a cow who was free and had their intrinsic rights given to them: their right to keep their babies and feed them what is theirs, not ours, to have babies if and when they want to, to procreate naturally without force and to enjoy freedom without being treated as if she was a slave to humans.

I remember the family farm in the 50's and 60's. Our cows never had life this good. Often times the cows would get what was called hoof rot, which I think was a form of fungal infection. I remember my dad would put pine tar on the hooves but from them standing on their feet. We never would dream to put the cows in a stall that would tilt them over to be able to work on their feet. I lived in the dark ages when it comes to today's farmer. Thanks, Eric. I really enjoy your posts.

yeah me too. My grandfather's poor cows spent all their entire lives in a headlock. It bothered me as a kid. They tied their legs to the stall when hoof work was required. Antibiotics for infections and mastitis. I used to work the summers "haying" and milking in the morning and evenings. When bedtime came I was asleep before my head hit the pillow.

Very motivating. I have always had a huge amount of respect for hard working farmers and ranchers, and dairy farmers are the hardest working of all. They do more on an "easy day" than most do on their busiest days.

I did this job as a teenager 33 years ago. Worked for a guy who had a hoof trimming business. We had a electric over hydraulic setup very similar to this. My job was to help herd the cow in and out of the table and to clean up the manure that every cow dropped when you picked them up. The worst part was the smell of the hoof as it was being cut. Imagine smelling your fingernail trimming and then multiply the potency by 1000. Still not as bad as the smell of emptying a cow's stomach when butchering (my other job that summer working for his dad's farm butcher business).

So I'm not familiar with the work on a cow farm. It's nice to see your daily activities. I like it a lot that you do not add music to your videos. Just the sound of the farm and your voice has a relaxing effect.

Looks so easy with the glue you use. I've done a lot of foot trimming myself when I was a herdsman. I had to mix two compounds to form the glue. It would heat up before setting. The crush they have now, makes it much easier to trim them. Foot trimming was one of my favourite jobs on the farm. Always nice to see them walking better, almost instantly afterwards.

I held off as long as I could before watching this because I know it'll be several days before I get my fix again. I'm still trying to figure out 2 things, why did 34 people give this a thumbs down and secondly, why do they watch videos if they don't like them. They're probably people that think you shouldn't be raising these cows for milking when the grocery stores have all the milk people need or they think you should be bathing a few hundred cows so they aren't dirty from being cows and laying in their own poop. This was another good video Eric, I always like watching you and your dad sorting cows and steering them (no pun intended since these are cows) in the right direction. Hope the plant you get the wood shavings plants reopens soon for your farm but mostly for their workers.

One of my favorite parts about working at the farm, I worked with calves like like 4 20yardx20yard pens...... was rotating them and cleaning out the old sawdust with the skid steerer. Putting down lime, new sawdust and new bedding... the calves were so happy and would run and jump around when they were let back into the nice clean pen.

Back in college in the late 60’s, I and another student were sent out to interview a farmer. On the ride there we joked about how stupid farmers must be. When we sat down at their table, they said, “We bet you told each other that we were going to be just a couple of stupid hicks.” Oops, Busted! We then learned a little bit of how much intelligence and knowledge to takes to run a farm. You continue their great work. Thank you!

It is tough being a dairy farmer right now....however the cows don’t have it tough, they still get to have their pedicures. The first cow was so happy that social distancing didn’t stop the pedicure man. Thanks for the great video and stay well.

What a striking coincidence! I had just had cake and MILK for dessert; then, I actuate my iPad and observe there is a new segment to view. “This one’s a big old cow right here.” I have used some of those words at times in the past, but for other situations than nail trimming. 😆 We all enjoyed that first cow jubilantly bouncing around after she was done.

The dogs always loved when the hoof trimmer showed up. They would eat all the shavings from the hoof.
