Hong Kong Protests | Start Here

What sparked the protests and the political crisis in Hong Kong?
Hundreds of thousands of people in Hong Kong have continued to protest in the streets since demonstrations began in June 2019.
The protests started as an outcry over an extradition bill and have reawakened Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement.
Hong Kong’s leaders are demanding big changes to the way the autonomous region is run and some want to stop it fully reuniting with China in 2047.
So how did we get here? This episode of Start Here explains why one extradition bill triggered an unprecedented political crisis.

Even that is too short of a summary. Taiwan played a role in this protest by not cooperating with the drafting of the extradition bill, while calling for justice to be brought to the family. Then when the murderer wanted to turn himself in to Taiwan after serving his sentence in Hong Kong, Taiwan also rejected. Of course, Taiwan president got pounded for that.

@@Fai2012 Stop spreading lies. Taiwan government were willing to provide the evidence to the Hong Kong government so that the murderer can be trialed in Hong Kong, but the Hong Kong government refused. There are also other suggestions to transfer the murderer to Taiwan such as case-by-case extradition bill approved not by the HK Cheif Executive, but by the Legco, or the HK gov could add a Sunset Clause into the extradition bill. All these suggestions were proposed by lawers or legislators, but Carrie Lam rejected all those suggestions and chose the most controversial one, which obviously because China wants to take more control on HK. Furthermore, Taiwan gov didn't reject to take the murderer. It's the murderer dicided to stay in Hong Kong after releasing from jail. Please check the facts first!

My country was considered best denocratic election process in SE Asia while Venezuela in S America. Venezuela has majority too just like HK. But somehow because Venezuela was accused of intimidating oppositions then the west considered it invalid, while rioters in HK were clearly intimidating pro government voters during campaign was considered valid by the west, if you notice both HK and Venezuela election process were the same if not similar.

As much as I appreciate the video host's attempt to give an objective report about the Hong Kong protest, I found her report to be inadequate if not biased against the protesters due to ignorance as can be seen from the missing of crucial events which explain why the Hong Kong people are justified to hold massive protests against the Hong Kong police and communist China.

These protests run much deeper than just that bill, similar to how the American Revolution was over much more than just a tax on tea.

The bill excludes 7 types of economical crimes and all of the political crimes. The Chinese government can use the bill ONLY AFTER the HK court makes the judgement.

To many neighbouring countries this demonstrators are going too far., perhaps tge polices are encouraging them by given approvals. Look at others countries if such rioters and public vandalism happened what will happened to them. What a childish joke when they demand police of taking tougher action..but neglect their own attitude of vandalised public properties. .. It must be joke of this century.

There was no sign indicating their suicide will, however. It is widely believed that these protesters might have been secretly executed. Almost 6000 have been arrested, facing at least 10 years in prison... some of them were even transported to mainland China, which shall be a clear infringement against "One country Two systems." Separatist idea is definitely held by some of the people in Hong Kong but it has never got to the mainstream. However, it is heavily propagandised in China’s state media for the audience of mainland Chinese. Most of the people in HK still stick to the five demands without asking for independence. Your explanation will give people false impression that HK is fighting for independence. I can’t agree with you on that.

Not sure what the numbers are now, but a little while ago it was 10 killed in France, one of which was by the police 14 killed in Chile, three of which were by the police In HK, there are two dead officially, neither committed by the police. But in HK there has also been a huge increase in the number of deaths that are classified as suicides, and the people of HK don't trust the HK police to have done proper investigations. The majority of HKers believe that the HK police have killed people and then engaged in cover ups. The level of distrust of the police among the people of HK is off the charts. The median HKer now rates their trust in the HK police at zero out of 100.

No democracy under British rule. Governor ran HK with executive committee, which was made of British business leaders. Legislature under British rule were toothless. Sector legislature seats are also contested by both camps by elections. One country two systems also implies HK must be able rule its self. Riots in last 12 months has shown HK cannot rule its self. Hence, one country supercedes more than two systems. Independence of HK attacks one country hence will not be tolerated.

@@drno1467 at first glance the bill doesnt involve politics, but on closer examination it is actually the first step towards political prosecution. Laws can be amended, especially in a parliament occupied by pro beijing legislators (not voted by HK resdients). This is the culmination of distrust and tension between Hkers and chinese government, which has been growing since 2014 umbrella incident. An example manifesting the evil deeds of communist party in HK will be the Causewaybay bookstore incident, in which the owner of a shop selling anti communist party books were arrested and detained in China. @@ansonauyeung4011 still not examples of why the extradition bill is an unfair bill. You are talking about something that hasn't happened that relates explicity to the bill. The Chinese book store owner was not extradited, but you are right, he was detained in China. I understand that, that isn't fair in anyway on the book store owner, but again, it has nothing to do with the extradition bill. The other examples are kinda irrelevant, as it has nothing to do with the extradition bill. Hk has an extradition bill with the US, but if we were to go on the example of distrust, we can easily say that the USA invaded Iraq, not for anything, other than oil, killing millions of people in the process. That is a massive human rights violation, so why do we have an extradition treaty with them? Doesn't make sense.
