Why Lebanon is so hard to fix | Start Here

Lebanon is in crisis. The economy is collapsing, there are big shortages of basics like fuel and medicine, and there’s little faith that the new government will turn things around. How did it get so bad and why is it so hard to fix? #AJStartHere with Sandra Gathmann explains.

Just to be clear that is even less than 1% what is happening in Syria or Yemen or Iraq or Afghanistan. Iraq is like Lebanon but since 2003 USA invasion of Iraq. Iraq makes just from pure oile with petrochemicals 200B USA equivalent, but however most of it goes to mismanagement, money washing with mismanagement, corruption and the government or stright up disappears or goes to Iran in USA dollars lol. Just in perceptive Kuwait suposed to be rich makes 40B and Amirite also makes less than Iraq. Yes Iraq has a larger population of 30M people but it is still enough to do a lot a year. 3T USA dollars of value washed to politicians in total since 2003. There is more which is wasted. Development stopped since 2005. Iraq can do much more than 200B as it used to. But even that is stolen.

Watching this from South Africa. We are going through similar issues with service delivery, no power for hours on end every day.. we experience water shortages ans we have areas where raw sewage just backs up onto the roads. Nigeria is no way near economic collapse, like Lebanon. The poverty rate in Lebanon is at 80%, in just 2 years. You can't even imagine what that's like. The Nigerian currency fluctuates at a couple of percentile per year. Food prices increase, but you can still buy it, that's why you have enough energy to write on your computer. When it comes to power, Nigeria has been surviving off generators for years, the Lebanon currency is so bad, they can't even afford to buy them. So let's keep ourselves grounded in reality, Nigeria's issues are like every developing country, nothing unique there. Why don't need anymore Nigerians fleeing to Libya to live as a slave, because they think being a slave is better than being a Nigerian.

You have different clans opposing each other inside the Maronite community (LF/Aoun/Frangieh) or the Druze Community (Joumblatt/Hamade). So unfortunately the country suffers from sectarianism not because of its religious diversity but because of the toxic sectarian mentality of the Lebanese and the fact that they are often used to bring up other countries to fulfill their interests, like the Maronites did with France and Israel, or the Sunnis with the Palestinians and Egypt (at Nasser time), or the Shias with Iran . Therefore they worship war criminals like Joumblatt and Berri and are never ashamed to kill each other, and I say that as a Lebanese.

What's really strange about Lebanon is that Lebanese outside Lebanon are all rich. Every Lebanese person I know here in the USA is a millionaire. But back home they can't make anything happen. Clearly the problem is religion. Here I have no idea of what religion the Lebanese are. It's never brought up. Without religion in the way, they are all successful irrelevant of religious background. Lebanon is the perfect example of why separating "religion from state" is so important.

Six years ago when I go to Lebanon, this country still relatively decent to be visited... Only a quabble of some Syrian and Palestinian refugees children that become a stain in the lebanese picture (particularly in Beirut)... As Indonesian, this country is the only place in Middle East that fully respect Indonesian (much like how filipinos seeing American I can compared) so yeah it's good to hang out there, but six years ago... 🤣 🤣
