This is a movie I can pretty much quote by heart. It's honsestly one of the most flat-out fun sci-fi movies ever made despite (or because of) how weird and silly it is. It's *juuuuust* tongue in cheek enough to be a fun romp without totally de-fanging it's handful of serious moments. And the practical fx still hold up remarkably well. Also, Ruby is the god-king of intentionally annyoing characters.

I used to enjoy this one online critic, and when The 5th Element came out, I sent him an email asking what he thought of it. My email included my enthusiasm for the movie (he didn't read my "review" until after he'd come to his own conclusions). His response was along the lines of "Someday you'll be mature enough to realize how much this movie sucks." ...which basically killed all my enthusiasm. But, every time I've seen the movie since that point, I've been like "this is so cool! I mean some of the parts are weird, but it's a lot of fun and these characters are interesting and the actors are good and it's colorful and has interesting worldbuild and there are parts where all sorts of related things happen at once and" etc. etc. I've never gotten to the point of not enjoying it. I don't know if I'd feel differently if I'd seen all the movies this was parodying/copying/whatever, or if I'd seen more than a couple Bruce Willis films in general, but it seems like a good movie and I don't know why that guy hated it so much.

I was once asked to summarise this film in three words. My answer was, "French. Very French." My favourite part is Gary Oldman's "The always efficient flame thrower... my favourite," in that lovely Southern drawl accompanied by the wink. And Chris Tucker's character, Ruby Rhod, irritated me a lot, but I still watched it to the end.
