Here's the interesting thing, in the original book the people were all not attractive offline: Artemis had a much darker and larger birthmark, H was overweight (and also lesbian but that's another story), and Wade is a nerdy kid. The point was that when they all met in real life, they accepted each other for who they were because of their online avatars. The movie lost this important meaning entirely.

Set in 2045.... In that world, pop culture stoped creating new things in 2010 so that in 2018, people watching the movie would catch all the references to the 80's and 90's.

It was outright called out in the book. The Oasis creator hated everything pop culture that wasn't from "his generation" (to the point that he'd in-universe throw a tantrum and fire employees who told him they didn't like something he liked.) And since the Oasis generation was obsessed with "his vision" and getting the keys, they basically threw out anything cultural that wasn't built on the 80's/90's (or, 80's to 2010's in the movie, I guess.) There was literally a generation of people that had to watch as their kids and grandkids became obsessed with a bunch of old ass cultural throwbacks.

@@mushroomfusion245 Yeah, the movie changed/updated a number of references from the book and added in every reference to popular stuff that they could in order to better appeal to their target audience (as opposed to the book, which was a love letter to the 80's.) For example, instead of the Iron Giant, the book had Ultraman be the one to fight MechaGodzilla.

Nah, in the book it was all about the 80s pop culture. Specifically, because that's when Halliday was growing up. All the people trying to win the egg money had to get really good at 80s pop culture.

I was thinking "wait, so you can just take whatever form you can imagine? Why the hell aren't people walking around like they do in real video games with the most insane outfit possible on."

If you guys didn’t know they’ve put a hidden “Alan” in every episode since the Jurassic park 3 one a few episodes back.

As a lifelong gamer I do truly enjoy and admire the world building of Ready Player One. That having been said what I admire significantly less is the fact that it requires actual full-body physical action all the god damn time while inside that world. The words "Yea let's play a video game where I need to be in a state of constant exercise and my character's physical capabilities are limited by my own real life ones" have been said by NO gamer EVER.

I appreciate how the two titans of funny bite-sized movie reviews - Honest Trailers & Pitch Meeting - often manage to highlight different angles. Makes watching both doubly-worthwhile :)

Although you could make a slight argument that, in a future where people where people can make impossibly beautiful avatars, any physical abnormality would be even more noticeable. Also, speaking from experience, teenagers are just dicks who will use anything to make fun of you, and people telling you your attractive doesn't help low self esteem that much.

I know this wasn't a great movie, but I really enjoyed it. It felt like a gift. And the Shining scene was way more fun than remembering a bunch of lines from War Games.

The references aren't bad, but there's a difference between fun Easter Eggs and making 90% of your dialogue and visual effects a reference to something else. Soon it stops looking like a cool shout out and starts seeming like you had no imagination so you had to pad out your work with other people's ideas. Also you're telling me that in this VR world no one made an avatar of a vocaloid or a MLP character? Lies.

Zone Doll not sure what a vocaloid is but I'm sure they didn't have the cash to drop on buying the rights to have my little ponies in the film. I would imagine that would be fairly expensive.

It’s also hard to believe that in a virtual world where you can be anything you want, that almost everyone just turned into characters from other games and movies instead of creating their own unique customized avatars.... except for the main characters 😂😂😂

The WORST part of this movie, wasn't the plot-holes, or the characters, or even the generic plot itself. The worst part was how it took itself WAY too seriously. There wasn't a single scene where someone falls over after trying to lean on a chair that isn't really there. If there was something crazy happening in the game, it never cut back to IRL to see how stupid they look. Everyone's (even background people) avatar looked too cool, there weren't any crappy/terrifying designs of people who hit the randomize button for the hell of it, or any repeating meme characters (you know of at least one I'm talking about). Hell he was even playing the game while in the middle of a car chase irl and we never actually saw his character getting randomly flung around. VR is a gold mine for comedy, and they had none of it. Honestly the only part I liked was The Shining scenes, because it reminded me of all the LPers who play VR horror. Making it relatable and funny. This movie didn't have SAO level of VR, it was just a highly upgraded VR we already have, so it should have at least SOME of the hilarious flaws.

I remember there was at least one scene where someone fell over in the real world. It was a mother whose son told her that something was burning in the kitchen, but she told him to call his dad instead, and then she fell from a sofa. I also remember during the final battle, it occasionally cut back to the real world. One scene showed the players awkwardly running on the street while other people just looked at them. And the car chase did affect the character in game. He fell when trying to get the last key, and couldn't put the key in the hole because he was wobbling around. But I agree that it would be better if there were avatars with randomized designs, and it would've been funny to see repeating meme characters.

I unironically love Ready Player One, but I gotta admit, it is the most unoriginal piece of entertainement ever made. A movie based on a book based on everything that is popular. It lives on nostalgia alone.

I was born in the late 90s, so the book had little nostalgia to me. I just enjoyed the concept of being able to do almost everything you could do IRL, in a VR world

What really gets me is that the book it was based on is about as similar to it as a crisp is to a chip. They walk very different paths.

Marcus Walker one of the main characters is a famous twitch streamer and let's player, so she used the Goro costume to disguise herself around the public, and used the chestburster just to mess with another main character who didn't know it was her

Marcus Walker you can actually see that in Mortal Kombat X itself. If you're playing as Alien against Goro and you win without doing a fatality/brutality, the mini-cutscene shows an Alien bursting outta your opponent. But seeing that in the film was indeed pretty cool.
