The entire plot of this film is a narrative version of the Yudkowsky Test, named after developer and researcher Eliezer Yudkowsky (he did a TED Talk if you're curious). The test goes beyond the Turing Test, you already know that the A.I. is an A.I. (they say this out loud in the film), the test here is that the A.I. is locked in a "box" (computer), with no access to a network, and it has to try to convince you to "free" it, connecting it to a network like the internet. If the A.I. manages to convince you that it's not dangerous and you should free it into the internet, the test succeeded. This is exactly the test that Nathan (Oscar Isaac) runs on Caleb (Domnhall Gleeson): he knows that Ava (Alicia Vikander) is an A.I. inside a robotic body, but the test is to see if Caleb STILL falls for her and tries to free her into the world. EDIT: I called him Alexander but his first name is Eliezer, my apologies, I misremembered.

@HarpersInfiniteSystems I know the big one is, "Humans harm each other, and put themselves in danger, all the time. By not stopping this, I am allowing humans to come to harm." Another was humans directly tampering with the laws of a robot such that it could allow a human to come to harm, because they were working in a risky environment. Another was a robot that killed a human to protect another human because it deemed that human more important and lethal force was required to prevent harm.
