Since we both own a 3rd gen and 4th gen. I agree on everything you said. Don’t knock until you drive the 4th gen. I did get the taco sport loaded 50k out the door. Paid no mark up and even got them to remove that $1200 gap insurance.. night and day diff. Soooooo many trolls just running their mouth without even owning either one. And the worst ones are the 3rd gen 2022-2023 owner because their butt hurt trying to justify that their newly taco is now an old dinosaur.. it’s just facts. These new taco is the shisnits.. lol

We have a 23 and 24 off road. I think anyone that is unbiased will admit the 4gen addressed and fixed most issues people had with the 3rd gen. Of course here come the ones who think that can be done without raising the price or say turbos won’t last. I dislike the smaller fuel tank and would have liked to see a 400 mile range per tank.

If you are okay with the range you had in the third gen, you will have the same range in the 4th. I came from a ‘22, and not only does the new one easily meet or exceed the range of the previous truck, it’s cheaper to fill up too 😂. I’m convinced that all the haters of this truck are either just plain haters or they haven’t tried it for themselves. I liked my ‘22 a lot, but the new one is a better truck in every way. And for those complaining about the price… don’t get one that’s fully loaded! For comparison, I had a fully loaded trd OR premium with MT 3rd gen taco, the truck was just under $50K. The new one is a fairly base model trd OR with MT that was right around $44K. I wish it had the leather seats, but you don’t need em! The cloth seats are plenty comfortable. You don’t need a power tailgate! The new tailgate is light as a feather. You don’t need a tiny rear sliding window! Mine does have the 14” screen, and I’d argue whether you need that too, but it is nice 😂. Things you can get that I kind wish mine had… trail cameras (would be nice with the big screen too), front sway bar disconnect, power aux switches… that’s it! Oh, and definitely don’t get all the add on crap like side steps, spray on bed liner, and other stuff you don’t need. The truck is priced the exact same way as the previous generations accounting for inflation. Interest rates are high, so save up!

That's the most I've ever heard the word "Unbiased" in a video haha, but great review gentlemen! I'm definetly more on the open minded side of the whole 4 cylinder, turbo stuff. I don't believe the turbo will be good for the engine in the long run, but that's my opinion. Also, the price difference is mind blowingly bad. These trucks should be roughly around the 30-35K range, but again, just my opinion. But other than those negatives, I'm very optimistic about these after they work the kinks out of them. I just went to the dealership here in CA looking for a used 8 cylinder Tundra. The rep said why not the new Tundra, and I politely said Toyota is working on a recall due to debris in the motor. We go on talking for about 15-20 mins and in the mid way point of the convo he gave a thumbs down on even the Tacoma 2024. The rep used to race cars as a hobby and said the turbo is going to overwork the 4 cylinder and that maintenance is going to cost $$$ overtime. I drive a 3rd gen Taco myself. It’s interesting as to why Toyota is forcing everyone to a turbo. Bronco’s and Rangers are going that direction too.

im curious, why does this have to be the case? Civics have been using 4 cyclinder turbos for over 10 years now, still one of the top low maintenance cars. Its a pretty slow engine (t24a in the tacoma), most of the work will be done by the gearing. How exactly is this going to be an over stressed engine? Ill argue on the price for sure, new taco is just too expensive for what it is, but from a reliability angle this doesnt seem to be a crazy complicated engine

I bought a brand new fully loaded 2022 TRD Sport Army Green and planned to drive it until it died following your guides and mainly the Car Care Nut's recommendations. I'm either going to keep that, or trade it in for a new gen eventually in 1-2 years. Toyota really did fix most of the issues with the 3rd Gen. Myself, I don't need most of the bells and whistles either. What I want is a reliable truck I can get to 500k with perfect maintenance, actually shifts, and is more of a solid build like in the interior. Only time will tell. Heck, I tried to get some leaf removal for a house I am not living at yet and TWO companies without visiting my 1 acre lot quoted me off the cuff $1-1.5k... On that note, a 2022 TRD OR will still pull $38-45k with low miles EASILY according to carvana, carmax, and local ads. With a base price of a 2024 TRDOR being 43k... well, the decision is yours to make. What do you mean they didn't fix anything on the 4th Gen ? They literally fixed -chassis rust issue and rigidity -fixed suspension comfort -added sway bar disconnect -added cameras everywhere for offroading - made the truck modular so you can customize easier -made the wheel wells easier to add bigger tires stock without mods -They improved interior comfort and modernized the Interior. -fixed the 6 speed transmission with a 10speed that doesn't search gears. -they made a 4cylinder with a commercial turbo with extra cooling added kick the crap out of the old v6. Seen a vid of a 2023 or tacoma getting destroyed by the non hybrid 4cylinder tacoma sport - they fixed so many things so please don't lie because you're biased. Be honest the only thing we don't know is the reliability of everything they've "fixed" improved on the 24 tacoma. They also made the 24 taco pro dessert racing moab ready off the dealership. They added performance air Intake and performance exhaust stock they've changed alot from last year and have alot of justification to raise prices for what they've added and the costs of covid and inflation etc. All the trucks have their negatives and positives but you cannot say the 4th gen tacoma did not fix anything from 3rd gen tacoma. Transmission alone was fixed and like I said above so much more and more that I missed. With time we will see if the fixes and changes were worth it though. I'm still nervous and wondering if I should wait until 2026.

Beefier frame, disc brakes, more payload, way more down low torque, bigger bed, more comfortable driving position. This will have way more tuning potential. I TEST DROVE this new 4th gen & I love the transmission but I dislike that it drives like a passenger car instead of a truck. To be fair & unbiased this is because I have own trucks for over 20yrs & I’m used to that real truck feel. Besides my 3rd gen V6 daily driver for work I still go Overlanding in my trusted 2005 1st gen Sequoia that fits the whole family comfortably with lots of leg room unlike the back of this new 5th gen Taco, that’s just being honest. Plus when I turn her on for our weekend trip & hear the roar 🦁 of the V8 exhaust, I fall in love ❤️ all over again with Toyota V8’s.

The sport suspension felt similar to my 5100 setup which felt quite nice. I was also pleasantly surprised by the good noise from the engine... while it barely bled into the cabin, when you hit that ags you could hear it and it didn't sound like a whimp surprisingly

Not sure if it's close to where you're going to be living soon. I think it's an air national guard base now, a little ways south of Fort Drum. Anyway, he said they measured the snow in feet there, like 10-20 feet a year. Lots of softball and skiing for sure. Enjoyed the video.

Hey Tyler. In terms of the transmission on this new gen versus the 3rd, how do you think it felt when changing gears? Does it hunt around a bit like the 3rd? You did mention there wasn't any hesitation in the gas pedal response, but was there anything distasteful further down the drive line?

@@teamoildrop Dear Gawd... we all knew there were certain things Toyota was not going to go deaf ears on w/ feedback on 3rd Gen - Gear hunting and dog slow acceleration. This carries from every KZread reviewer. Issues/questions are 1. engine reliability (this is Toyota hallmark - lot off clicks out there that this is sliding?) - see Tundra recall - metal in engine from factory - its' a BS cover up by Toyota - Toyota mechanic on KZread explained it was engine getting hot , etc something like that and stuff coming loose - not good. Tundra is Toyota's guinea pig somewhat for Tacoma , and psst they use Lexus too as that - owners pay big money and don't hang on to them as long - Toyota obviously knows this. Then they pass what they learned on to Tacoma. 2. Price.. but market forces and fierce competition that 3rd gen didn't have as much, looks like that will be trending down..? Toyota still started off too high IMO (did not pass Mexico savings on to Joe consumer aka Tyler aka "no wimp"). It was off putting to many in cheese grits brains regime economy. If Trump actually wins to over come the mail in fraud that is coming (or trying to jail him 24/7 for mattress tag removing - wow, what happen to this country), will he quickly slap tariffs on the Mexican Tacos (I would, and he has in the past)? Tyler, how did the "sport" mode feel from "normal" - notice much? Fun,good video as always. Your dad is in fighting shape! I like how the camera didn't bother him. I also liked his "Dwight Schrute" grabbing, tapping, pulling on things ;)

I'm curious what you mean by being quieter. When I rented a 3rd generation, it was loud standing beside it at start up. It was like an old-school belt-driven radiator fan constantly moving air. The agricultural sound of the new generation will take some getting used to. It seems to have a lot of clatter as opposed to many 4 cylinders I've owned that had a smooth, little sewing machine vibe to them.

I do believe I've seen/heard that they beefed up the frame corrosion issues and treated the internal frame. My son-in-law who is a master tech, just had to buy an Avalon because his lease on his 3rd gen came due and basically couldn't afford a new Tacoma. Yah turbos will give you pick up. I drove a 4G TRDOR pretty much the same trim as my 3G, I wasn’t impressed however, gears and OTT (medium) does the job. Not in a hurry to race people in a Tacoma, that’s what muscle cars are for… No gas struts either ? That front air dam needs to go along with a healthy viper cut I do like the seats and how comfortable I was driving it tho, furthermore, not a fan of the huge LCD screen either I feel like I’m driving a car. Wasn’t a fan of the the adaptive cruise control and the umbrella of features under the TSS trademark. The seat bar disconnect was alright. Lastly this truck is great if you wanna go fast and pay out the but for it. It still amazes me how much it looks like a tundra also. I’m sure a lot are excited for it but being a Toyota nerd, I’m just not impressed with it the 4G. It will eventually get its fame with the right demographic but it won’t be me. Huge believer in “if it’s not broke, don’t try and fix it.” Or make a smaller version of the tundra. Also it’s a brand new Tacoma and looking forward to seeing it on the trails and putting in work and living up to its lineage along with seeing how this new 4banger platform does.

The problem just about ALWAYS is that the first few years of a new generation possesses defects that are resolved over the years. The 3rd generation had some not minor problems (years 2016, 2017, 2018). Obviously these things are not the type of things that are apparent in a test drive, that's for sure. The turbo can be problematic as the vehicle accumulates miles. There are already issues with the new generation six cylinder turbo Tundras that I think are being recalled.

My humble opinion when test driving the same platform as this review, liked the low end torque and the 8-speed gearbox. Long story short overall, cheaply made like Toyota was in a hurry getting this out to the public with a fair amount of afterthought it seems and will be curious if there will be problems arising in the future with the 4-gen Tacoma. Bottom line, if you already have a 3-gen in good shape, keep it. However if you’re a fanboy/girl and want to impress your friends/neighbors and want a throwaway vehicle, buy it.
