I cant imagine anyone needing more than stock power from a 650R on the dirt unless they are racing professionally. My 2001 is a beast and I have been riding for 40 years. She is a lot of fun!!! Nice vid...maybe I will do it anyway. 😅

These videos inspired me to get a CA plated fixer upper xrr. Found a $2000 project bike. It's coming along hoping for fall here in so cal. Head to toe revamp. Ive watched these bikes for a long time. The reliability, price and available parts all combine for the dual sport bike I'm looking for. Like to see more upgrade vids triple clamps, and a review on those complete wheels you swapped on there.

I love xrs I ownd a xr 400 it was like riding a arm chair comfortable bikes for long distances I used to get off my yz 250 and my body would hurt after a good day out 👍

I'd really like to know the headlamp setup. Very interested in setting my 600R similarly.

Great vid, I always love hearing Bob's comments on the big XR. He was right there in the thick of it during the HRC / JCR days. You had the whole fam except Diane! Another great mod that I found to be super helpful was running one of those SPAL fans on the right radiator. I had someone waterjet me a bracket for it, but it keeps the bike cool in those tight sections or in town on the street. Its the same fan the KTMs use, you do need a 12v system though. I run a Baja Designs 250w split setup on mine, 125w to the 8" race light, 125w in to a 12v circuit box.

What is the headlight and brackets?

Honda sold their cam with a higher compression piston for a reason. When you add duration you lose pumping compression at low rpm.

valves that let the air/fuel mixture into the engine and the exhaust out of the engine. The camshaft uses lobes (called cams) that push against the valves to open them as the camshaft rotates; springs on the valves return them to their closed position. This is a critical job, and can have a great impact on an engine's performance

On those motors you can put bigger cams in them right up until the size where you need stiffer valve springs , after that you start shortening eng life . They also like more compression with that bigger cam. Port work and exhaust helps some . With the carbs if you want bigger I would go kehin fcr and bore it. Honestly power is fun but weight is the real problem with xr650r s .

Ok question. Have you ever installed one of these and had trouble kicking after installing? Basically I installed and I’m running into and extra compression midkick. Not being able to get a good kick in at all. Everything is lined up..tdc is good. With the stock cam I know it has the decomp which I’m thinking is the biggest difference. I can get a full kick with the stock cam..not with the hotcam...any suggestions?

Hey G it may change the kicking characteristics but it still should start.

When you do stage 2 cam did you completely remove the decompression lever manual or auto one. I have stage 2 and previous owner removed all the decomp parts and ita hard to kick over.

You should still be able to use the manual decomp lever but the hot cam will remove the auto decomp. I don't know why anyone would remove the manual decomp level, its probably a nightmare to kick past tdc

Hey how much is it for that job at your shop?

Hey guys, wondering if you can help me diagnose a vibration issue I'm having on my XR650R. I'm noticing a strong intermittent vibration from 68 mph and higher speeds. At that speed it vibrates strongly for about one second, then it stops for a second than it starts again. If I speed up, it just reduces the period, like instead of a second it does the same but with half a second at 75mph. Any thoughts?

There are more up to date gps modules I would prefer. Example Google maps on my Iphone is amazing but lacks point to point feature. The Voyager has no inlay of a map its just points and a black line. Eventually I see google just making its maps accessible anywhere and crushing all gps units, but for now we all have to wait. but to give you a better direction. try Anything Garmin

The best mod you can do to the XR650R is an FCR 41 carb, expensive but worth every penny

Do you feel a noticeable difference with the stage 2 cam? Do you have to run an aftermarket piston so the valves don't hit the piston or can it run with an OEM piston? Is it hard not being able to run the decomp lever with the cam?

OEM Piston, and yes makes a big difference in mid to top end where its needed most, also no issue with decomp lever

The stage 2 plays nicely with the HRC piston as well.

Picked up a bone stock “still corked” XR650R that a 70 yr old farmer traded in on a Harley in Lincoln Nebraska , my guess is he was tired or trying to kick start it? Of course he never sent in the MSO, so for $1500 I stole it from a Harley dealership! Got a Mo abandoned title and now it’s street legal (barely). Starts easy now that it’s un corked and jetted! Now for a cam and pipe! I love the way my CRF450r pulls, will this cam and pipe help it pull like the 450?

+Wdssdd Gfcfdff thanks for the question. I would go pro circuit t4 pipe. Hot cam stage 2. And get the head ported at Los Angeles Sleeve co. Make sure the emissions crap is taken off the bike. That bike will haul. Lol

what do you mean for the emission crap? the bike I am buying already have the t4 pipe. k&n filter and that is all I remember haha. parts are really pricey here in the philippines tho. what sprocket combo do you use sir for onroad?

I had a xr 400 went 406 cam staintune exhaust cleaned up header pipe diameter went up on main jet kept stock needle and opened air box completely changed power every were pulled like a horny race horse 🐴

Lectron are hit and miss for privateer off-road guys especially 2 strokes - you often dont know the tune of the bike and people, again get mixed results. Some say the application is improved as is fuel economy. Others who have used it will argue. This means, to me, that I don't go for a lectron on my my mx 2 stroke, no matter where it will be used, for 500 bucks, to get better fuel economy unless I was racing and needed to make the extra 5 miles.

Liquid cooled to air cooled?? Why do you think Oglivie invented the 650R for Baja. Cooler running motor means you can extract more power out of it. The 600R was great but limitations in keeping a modified motor running mean for longer meant it ran into heat related issues.Yeh! You can throw an oil cooler on them but your adding weight. There is no substitute for the xr650r except for another modern liquid cooled offroad bike..

Just buy a cr500
