HONDA XR650R BRP Rolling First Impressions and Onboard Preview! o

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

It didn't take long in the saddle for the Honda XR650R to make a case for being the best off-road dual sport 650 out there. It's got great suspension, tons of power, weighs less than most other dual sports both this size and smaller, it's reliable to a fault, and it won't break the bank. This is truly a bike bred for high speed enduro, and it shows!
This is just the preview, though! Make sure to check out the full XR650R review in our upcoming videos!

Iv always had XRs as dirt bikes since the 80s. Few years ago got a XR650r stock standard near new condition. Only thing I did to it was change the exhaust to a FMF powerbomb stainless steel and put on tires to my liking. The thing is insane and love it that way. Iv ridden it open road and at highway speeds and does it easy but was nasty on my butt for long periods. Got a blackbird for long distances anyway. I like how it has no battery to worry about. Just park it up and it'll be waiting and ready for you. The kick starter for some is a pain but it's not that bad. If you keep your bike serviced and tuned it should start easy enough. People new to this bike I recommend they ask on how to start it correctly so your not busting your leg or flooding it. Great report. Thanks.

I got the XR650R simply because its cheaper than a newer bike and can do literally everything. Fast enough to cruise on the highway, get on the dirt fast or slow, Reliable (with proper maintenance) and with minimal mods! a true bang for the buck out of the box used (Around $2000-3500) + 300 to make it street legal. run 15-42 gearing with 2 master links and a 13T to switch out on the trails

Nice review, Tyler, You bring back some great memories. For years, I rode a XR600R with a Baja Designs kit and Hot Cam. My son now owns the bike. It will still put a huge grin on your face. Perhaps he'll let me take it for a ride again some day. They are THE perfect dessert bike. One of the less talked about advantages that bike offers is it's ability to develop it's rider's right leg. It's impossible to imagine that a rider, highly skilled with the magic button, could adapt to the kick starter on the old XR, nearly as easily as an XR owner could adapt to the button. If in a good butt kicking contest, the rider of an old XR will win every time.

I had a XR 600R kick start and my best friend had a XR650 we had the most fun ever on those bikes. In fact I would go so far as saying the best years of my life. we often swapped bikes and we could not decide what bike was better they were both a pleasure to ride off road. The XR650 seemed more ridged in turns and a tad more power, but the 600 would not let it get away. I will never forget we rode on a bypass that was being built and it was a weekend and nobody was around no work men nothing. we had nearly 10 miles of levelled first stage road of dirt and we got some serious speed, I hit a big 360 excavator track rut at 70mph my friend said it was epic to watch as he was right beside me, Not for the faint hearted. Honda make the best bikes in the world. Love them, they take abuse and they never let you down. In fact there cars are the same. Want reliability, value for money, buy one.

Just listening to the audio of that video made me miss my KLX650, of course I haven't taken my new (old) WR450 out to play yet, I'm hoping the pain will be dulled a wee bit. I once rode Andy Grider's factory Honda, back in 2002 I believe, that bike was amazing! They had everything so perfectly dialed on that machine, it handled perfectly, you almost didn't even notice the 2-3ft tall whoops we were cruising through. After that ride I understood how team Honda had won all of those Baja races, the XR650R is a desert beast!

I know what you mean about wrapping your legs round the tank. It extremely comfortable in that position and allows you to control it with your thighs. just awesome power and pull from unbelievably low revs. pity they don't make them anymore and we don't get the 650r in the UK either. shame, I'd have it as a second bike to the drz

I had a street legaled XR 650r and it was awesome, too bad it didn't have a 6th gear (I say this about every bike) for highway cruising, but off road it was unstoppable. It was all about the motor. Where is this filmed at? Looks kind of like southern Utah.

Oh yeah the 650r is a legit off road bike a good rider can run away from just about any other bike short of a the modern KTM 690 or 950/990 in the desert. There's a reason they dominated Baja for so long. I would love to own one but only with the rare magic button retrofit

willy286 I will admit the only BRP I have experience with was one that raced Baja so it may have had a high comp piston so that might have made it harder because it was a bit harder than the KLX650r. But even the XR400 left me wishing for a magic button or new a new knee.

I love my L but would prefer the liquid cooling , the lower weight , the more power of the R. I have thought about the kicker, and in most cases it wouldn't bother me i.e. Streets an flat spots, there have been times when I'll have to admit I just would not have been able to kick start my bike . So I think I'm going to go bigger bore without going too high on the compression when it comes time for a new piston . I'm considering moving to the desert an without liquid cooling the big thumper might not be real happy.

Great vid. I totally agree with your assessment. I used to have a 2001 XR650r with a Baja street legal kit and you are right about its off road performance but it was a bit Big/heavy for me for tight woods stuff and in comparison to the KLR on the road Id probably take the KLR for comfort like you said. More street go KLR more dirt go XRr or XRl. The XR650r will get you through anything and is the best 650 off road for the price IMO. You've got to go pricey Austrian (KTM/Husky) to beet it. I sadly traded mine on a Buell Ulysses back in the day when I thought I was going to go lots more street and less dirt. Big Mistake! Anyway Ive had a few XRs/XLs over the years (1-XL80 1-XR500 1-XR600 1-XR650r 1-XR400) and have loved them all and the claims of bullet proof reliability are no lie! Im one of those guys that should take better care of his bikes but the XRs have spoiled me because they just don't care they'll run no matter what kind of punishment they're put through . I bought my used 1980 XR500 from an older guy for 100 bucks when I was in my early 20s in college after having to sell my first awesome running XR600 for get through college money. Almost sold my car instead of my bike (Lol) but wiser advisors convinced me otherwise. My XR500 was sitting in this fellas back yard for like 5 years out in the weather In Wyoming. It wouldn't even roll because the brake drums had seized due to surface rusting. I drug it to my truck with a buddy lifted it up and slid in the bed on its side and took it home. At home I took the brake drums apart and cleaned them up, cleaned the carb, and put a new spark plug in it and no lie it fired up! And other then new tires and rear shocks I rode that bike around the Wyoming mountains for 2 summers during college doing nothing else to it but changing the oil and putting gas in it. Finally gave it to a buddy to ride when I had a chance to get my XR650r. As my skills needs and buying power have changed the bikes have been swapped out since I don't have enough money to keep them all, or I would! I absolutely Loved all my XRs and vowed I would always own one and when I got the chance to get a street legal 650r I couldn't pass it up and I was not disappointed. It had taken my beloved XR600 to the next level in every respect! I now have a street legal XR 400 though and am loving it for mountain trail riding in Wyoming. It is better in the tight stuff then the 650 was for me (although I know Pros have no problem with tight stuff on the 650r) and it still has plenty of power for me at 5'11" and 250lbs. And like you said about its power I never had enough riding situations to take advantage of the 650r's power. It really likes to haul even though it will tractor through anything. The 400 suits me better for the slower tighter stuff with enough top for the occasional street jaunt. Don't get me wrong there are other great bikes out there but for the combination of performance reliability and price the XR line is hard to beat IMO and the 650r is at the top of that line. I actually was looking For a DRZ400s or KLX400s before I bought my XR400 because It is also a great bike IMO and is, I think, a great combination of power and street legal dirt worthy lightness. I was going DRZ/KLX because the XR400 wasn't street legal and was harder to find but I got lucky and found one close to me that was already converted to street legal capability and had a title with it which is another thing that all XRs don't have. Liquid cooling and electric start are Im sure awesome but I honestly haven't had any issues without them in my riding. Of course I trail ride I don't motocross so I haven't had any overheating issues and ya kicking a bike isn't as easy as pushing a button but I do ride in the mountains, and firstly an XR is a hard bike to stall (tractor factor) and of all the bikes Ive had they kick over and start rather easily even after a drop or all day riding. But don't get me wrong if the XRs all had liquid cooling and electric start I wouldn't be complaining. Might go DRZ if I ever wear the XR400 out to see how the other half lives. Who am I kidding I will never wear out an XR! Ok im respectful of all great motorbikes but because of my personal history im an XR fanboy Lol.
