Me too, but I am looking for a bike & this type video sure lets ya know the stuff to look for in one of these bikes. I really wonder about "Inspection" after you pull all the emissions stuff off her? I'm not in Kalifornia but it would be my luck to trash all this sH!T just to be rejected by the State? I ask this often but no one answers so IDKnow? peace man

Thank you. Just deleted the pump on my 2007. It does feel better. Note: Just for esthetics I put two 10mm bolts to cover up the old mounting holes on the cylinder.

Just bought a used 1993 one from a friend with 5000 miles on it. : ). The kit came the other day. Once it is warmer outside, I am going to do this mod. Thanks for posting this video!!!

Great video! I just bought a 2020 XR650L. I just put some Pro Taper handlebars with 2 inch risers. Now I’m ready to rip all that smog crap off. Next week I’ll redo the exhaust system. Can’t wait to get her set up like I want it. Thanks again for the video. Very good.

I also removed my oil canister and routed the hose to the top of the air box. 1500 miles since and no problems. If you haven't done so, try Dave's Mods with a foam filter and snorkel removal. HUGE difference in throttle response and power.

I have a 2007, I did this & added a Pro Circuit Type 496 exhaust system. I consider the "de-corking" a must. It lowers weight (which the bike needs) and improves performance.

This bike is pretty light for what it is… I’m fairly certain the KLR is 60+ lbs heavier. And the DR650S is about fifteen pounds heavier.

I did this to my 2012, another good mod is desnorkle the air box under the seat. Easy to drill out 2 rivets and remove snorkle then go up one size on the primary and main jets. Still have stock pipe.

is this by chance a CA bike? I just put a kit i got off ebay on my 07 and you have a few more spots on the carb that need to be blocked off. I have 3 extra small caps, was just watching to see if i somehow missed one.

It must be a CA model or something. He had more stuff to remove and block off on his than I had on my 2018.

What is the purpose of the Smog?

I didn't see any of the diaphragm parts on my 2021 so I only needed 1 of the small rubber caps, can anybody else verify that I did it correctly?

It should allow better cooling to the driver side of the engine.

Would doing smog delete after purchase of a new xr650l adversely affect the factory/manufacturer warranty

jeremy you won’t regret it. I got an 06 with a thousand miles on it about a year ago. Absolute blast. My dad dug mine so much, he ran out and bought a low mile 14. They really are excellent bikes, both on and off road.

Do you have regular gouvernement emission test in the USA, like the MOT in the UK?

The police have enuf to worry about, they don't have time to be worrying about emissions stickers..

Keep the canister and make it into a reservoir tank or tool box

To reduce emissions and allow it to be street legal.

Holy moley, you really have to give us the tools used? You forgot to mention the gloves, lighting level and soap used after.....

A friend told me by eliminating the smog mechanism what cause overheating to the engine please let me know if this is true or otherwise I will eliminate it

The smog mechanism recirculates exhaust gases which may have unburnt fuel and the rest is inert already consumed what happens is that inert volume and unburnt fuel make the mixture richer because less oxygen to burn. So you could have overheating if you eliminate it and go too lean. Adjusting the carb richer would solve that. Many forums can give you advice.

@@dnnich ^^ This is completely wrong. The ASV (air suction valve) does NOT recirculate exhaust gases. It is simply a vacuum operated valve that allows fresh filtered air from the air box to enter the exhaust ports DOWNSTREAM from the exhaust valves to more completely burn unburned gases in the exhaust system. It in no way affects anything that happens inside the engine. People seem to confuse this device with the old EGR valves on cars which injected exhaust into the intake tract. Again, the ASV has no effect on anything happening inside the combustion chamber, only inside the exhaust system. Also, the ASV was used on all US XRs, not only California models.

I heard somewhere that this has no effect on performance and actually cleans up emission, I dunno though

Just removed mine. 2019 xr650l I felt more throttle response and down shifting is smoother with less pops. Bike looks cleaner. Had fun doing the mods.

No, but they are lean from the factory already.

I don't own an XR650L yet but might get one and this mod looks like a great one. Good job filming and explaining the steps. My only input is to not include any background music.

Do you have to re-jet the carb if you do the smog delete?

These emission control device makes the Bike to be legal in states like California
