Honda VFR750 water pump rebuild with major SCREW-UP! Video 1.

Rebuilding and screwing up (temporarily) the ML7 water pump from the 1986 Honda VFR750. I used an excellent kit from the following source:
AZV65 Magnas and Sabres
www.AZV65.com
Not the kit's fault, mine and mine alone. But... I FIX the damage but you have to watch the supplemental video 2 for that!

Thank you for a GREAT video! Today I was trying to rebuild water pump from CB900F hornet, didn't make it. Tomorrow I will try push it out and push new things in by a press. Thanks once again! Greetings from Lithuania!

Funny, I am in a new shop and am the only gringo, this Honda water pump over haul reminds me of the one word I am very well versed in Spanish, the word is "Pinga." Jeez, I have done these mechanical seals on my Ninja 500 and think the Kawi engineers are ahead here compared to the v-four water pump. Thankfully none of my gen3 VFRs are weeping, and I have a brand new oem water pump in a box with associated o-rings to install if the need ever arises. The 91 has 85,000 miles and the 93 has 35,000 miles respectively. I was able to replace the entire wiring harness on the 91 with one of the last oem harness's in the states years ago. Great bikes, over engineered compared to other stuff, but build quality second to none. Now, things are more throw-away. Oh, did the mechanical seal thing on my pool pump too. South FL here, Peace

Really an excellent video. Much appreciated as I plan on this job as soon as the kit comes in. Remember, if it was easy everybody and their mother would be doing it. Good for you for sharing, says good things about you. Regards.

Good information and enjoyed video. Probably just send mine off if it needed rebuilding to save having to buy 2or 3 kits. RIDE SAFE OUT THERE!

5.19.23. The correct term for the Ceramic seal is …. Mechanical Seal™️

Yep. But then again, aren’t all seals mechanical? I mean they’re not functioning on hopes and dreams they mechanically seal one place from another.

this water pump looks super similar to my 2004 VT750 Shadow's water pump, minus a few slight cosmetic changes. Do you need to empty the oil when replacing these pumps?

My least favourite engine - ever. Remember doing way to many of the Honda V-4 cam chain tensioners and swapping out gear drives on those things in the 80's when I worked at Suzuki dealers. Honda shop across the street was always used 'too busy' as an excuse to avoid them (I know as I worked there before moving to Suzuki shop) CX500 was pretty infamous for leaking water pump seals, did dozens of those at Honda shop. Should probably have checked seal bore, only time I've seen seals come out like that on a 'regular' basis is when they are tapered. Personally, I like to grease seals for initial start as well

Those spring gears that remove the lash are a bit of a pain, I had to fight the one on the clutch side. I left the cam gears alone, although they did want to try and push the crank up from the upper half while I had the case split, due to the spring force of that thinner part of the gear with the spring tension. As for the cam chains, Dave Dodge provided me an set up updated ones for my '82, I put them in years ago. VERY hard to see the end of the arm itself going into that little slot in the crankcase casting, while the engine is in situ. With the engine out, it's a breeze. The main issue with the early VF750 which I found to be a head scratcher is the '82 first-year like mine, the front head cams (2-4 cylinders) gear gets the timing mark set at a 45 degree angle to the surface of the head, not parallel. It's right in the service manual, they want you to make a template out of paper, remove the gear and paste on the paper, put the gear back on and using the marks on the template made at 90 and 45 and 180, you line up the 90 to the head which puts the mark at 45 degrees, really dumb. The rear head is normal. I just counted the number of teeth in a 90 degree rotation and divided in half and made a mark. That mark goes to the head. The '83 changed, and is normal. So you line all cams up with the surface of the head on the '83 and up. I have an '83 motor in the shed, I went through it years ago, it's half-assed though due to piston to bore clearance being way out, I didn't want to pay for machining and pistons/rings. Anyway, it's going to be a parts donor engine in which I pilfer parts off it for the V45 in the Magna frame, when I do that work, I will take the '83 cams out of the 2-4 cyls on that donor engine and correct that nonsense in the '82. Cheers.

@@MotoRestoFL Don't know if you had the VT250 in USA? That had the wrong instructions for fitting front cams as well. I ignored them and used the 'notch' on end of cam shaft to time motors as that was always in 'correct' position compared to cam lobes. Haven't done one since about 1985 though

@@1crazypj Haven't heard of that model so I'd say no. It's not a mistake in the manual; on the '82 VF750, you have to put the cams timing marks (both cams) at a 45 degree angle to the cylinder head surface only on the front head. If not, it'll destroy the valve train since it's an interference motor.

@@MotoRestoFL I know I've done dozens of them in the past and never had any valve issues (only the cam drive's) but just can't remember how I did them? I left the Honda dealers before they were launched ( left 1980) so never had factory manual that I remember but they always ran well after fixing so I guess I was doing something right? They were still slower than the 1979 GS550 I built for a friend to go production racing on so I pretty much gave up on all the V-4's (including 219bhp modified Yamaha V-Max, that was just stupid for a street bike 😁)

Cbr1100xx 1998 Caviter Bike had a leak in the water pump, so I was going to fix it this time, but the 1998 water pump (19220-MAT-760) is going to be discontinued So, I found that the water pump (19200-MAT-E20) of the new injector vehicle is in stock, and the engine is the same engine for both the cab and the new injection type, but whether it will be compatible;; I'd like to ask if it's a compatible improvement or if it's something else that can't be installed. I can't get a new 1998 CBR1100XX water pump
