Honda Civic electrical problems - rodents chewing wires - fixed

Ғылым және технология

Honda and many new vehicle manufacturers now use a soybean coated wire in the electrical harnesses on vehicles. This poses an extreme problem and needs to be addressed. Avoid buying ANY vehicles (especially Hondas) with these wires. It will cost you more money than the car is worth in the future - and this is not covered by the manufactures warranty. This video shows ways to find the problems.

Thanks for making this video very helpful info. My 07 Volvo has been recently damaged by rodents non stop tried every type of deterrent sprays, traps, fabric softener sheets etc... I found out that this issue has been getting worse as the newer models that came out after mine these companies going green is a joke. My brother just bought a 2019 Honda civic and my dog is detecting something in front area of car, just like it did when I didn't realize for many months there were rodents doing plenty of damage on mine. Not having this issue with my mid 1990's vehicles at all... I am now researching which brands do not use soy based wires, parts, or going green non sense otherwise they won't see any green from my pocket.

My Honda CRV 2020 is at Honda service for the past 11 days. All the wires are chewed by rodents. Even my dog was trying to eat the wires under the seat. They made them edible. What a dumb thing to do!!! Thanx for the video and NEVER AGAIN FOR HONDA till they fix the issue.

I have the same problem!! I literally just got this fixed at a Honda dealership and paid $400 bucks for it. Today (3 weeks after the repair) I am facing the same problem. The dealership sent me ANOTHER 400 dollar estimate. I looked up the part online and it costs 14 bucks so I will try to fix this myself or a local mechanic. But wow that soybean coated wires thing just hits it home for me. I was just getting around to paying off this car but it looks like this baby will have to go. Thanks for video man! This is super helpful.

I just leased a 2019 Honda Civic and 2 months into having the car I have the exact same problem. Now the dealership s giving me the runaround and telling me I have to go through insurance to fix it. Why is Honda installing the same exact soy based wiring in their cars when they know that there will be problems? Do not buy a Honda! If they are not going to address a known problem then why would people buy their cars?

My neighbor 2 houses down from me had this problem with her Lexus she stored outside. It was her "summer only" car and mice had caused over $3500 in damage from chewed wires. My 2011 Ford Fusion Hybrid sits outside 24/7 except in winter where it goes in the garage and my 2012 Taurus sits outside during winter upwards of 5 months. In the 7 years I have been doing this, I have had zero problems related to chewed wires.

2018 Camry: Many codes were set for brakes and LDA . Rodent ate the main wiring harness , the dealer charged $800 I thought it was a lot but some people have $3000 bills. We are going to use a rodent spray (Tomcat brand) and coat as many wires as possible. We are going to do it every month, it only takes a minute if you are just doing it under the hood.

Just had this happen to me yesterday on my 2019 Honda Civic. I thought it was some joke. Warranty wouldn’t cover and they said the damage was around $400. Car is currently in their shop getting fixed tomorrow, but they aren’t very comforting telling me that they’re not 100% sure if this will fix the problems, though they said it’s a slim chance there’s anything else wrong than the wire being replaced. Rodents chew on all plastics, soy or no soy, as plastic is a very good material for sharpening their teeth on, which rodents must do daily or their teeth will grow into their skulls. Rats chew the wiring in many makes and models of cars and trucks, not only Honda vehicles. I trap rats for my living and regularly am called to deal with rats chewing Jeep, Toyota, Dodge and other makes, sometimes causing thousands of dollars in damages for new wiring harnesses. If there is any chance of rats or mice chewing your vehicle's wiring, place a few rat traps and mouse traps set under your vehicle's engine area at night, especially during winters if you live north of about 40 degrees latitude.

I have the exact same problem with my 2017 Honda Civic that I bought new. Every year, I clean out acorns I find in the engine compartment. The service dept. told me to put dryer sheets around the area, but I've also got conflicting information on doing this. My car is the shop right now and I've been told that rodents chewed on my wires and caused a check engine light to go on. It will cost me about $1800 to have the wiring replaced. I have heard of a 12 volt rodent repellent that you attach the battery of the car. It's cheap $28.00 and reviews have been generally favorable. After watching your video, I've decided that it's time to get rid of this car after I've had the damage fixed and the check engine light reset. I can't imagine selling this car to anyone in this damaged condition. It's too bad because I only have 17,000 miles on it.

I had this same issues. I paid 300 bucks for the new wire and installation. Happened 2 weeks later so I spent the 30 bucks on the new harness and did it myself in about an hour. I had to do it topside so it was probably 10x harder for me than your local mechanic. 1800 bucks for 15 minutes of labor is absurd.. Sorry you got scammed. I did this myself and I barely know how to change a cars oil... lol

@@Crumt30 Thanks for your reply. First, I want to be clear that I wasn't scammed. I had another service department take a look at it and their estimate was about the same. I'm using a dealership service dept. do the work and I know labor Is more expensive than using an independent repair service. Also, I wanted the replacement part from the manufacturer. Yes, it costs a lot more to do it this way. If the car had 100,000 miles on it, then I definitely would go the cheaper route and sell the car. But my 2017 car has less than 20,000 miles on it and is paid for. The resale value of the car is also worth it.

There was a fire under my hood and the dash warning lights lit up like a Christmas tree. Paid $500 out of pocket and insurance paid over $3000. Brought car home. One and a half days later: Dashboard lights come on. Four hundred dollars out of my pocket. I thought the rodent damage thing was a scam until I saw leaves mysteriously appearing under my hood. Get Rodent tape from Honda. But first fix it w/ new wires then wrap it w/ rodent tape. It happened in my first year of owning my Civic. After I had them replace my wires, I put rodent tape and car works fine.

@@jj5515 How much did the dealer charge to wrap w/rodent tape. Wires are fixed.? Did you tape the wires yourself? This has happened twice so far. So far, I'm $3100 in the hole.

"I hope this is helpful." No, not really. Get rid of your Toyota or Honda (the most reliable vehicles) because you can't solve a rodent problem Is just Stupid! I place one mothball every 18" around/ underneath my car, closer under the engine compartment. Use the mesh bags moth balls come in, or make your own: 6 - 8 moth balls per bag, tied at the top with about 2 feet of string for easy retrieval. Place on flat or cubby- hole type spaces or previously damaged areas, as well as where the hood is hinged. I used to put out the old-time mouse traps, baited with one sunflower seed, as an added precaution, but haven't needed them after using mothballs. As a backup and under the house I use a mixture of: 1/2 cup each of cornmeal and plaster of Paris, 1 tbsp cocoa powder, 2 tbsp granulated sugar. Place about two tablespoons in a shallow jar lid under engine compartment. This is just as effective as d-CON bait blocks but not as poisonous (won't harm other animals that eat the rodents' bodies). Rodents will seek a source of water after eating this concoction. (I live in a forest, have already paid $250 for rodent wire damage [2010 Corolla], and decided to get serious about rodent problem/damage.) Occam's razor: the simplest solution is often the best one.

Add Ford to this list. They wanted to charge a customer $9000 to repair a car that was 6 months old. Mice ate the wires too. Sadly, you need to simply become more informed. Dealerships sell cars....period.

I'm having a serious issue that started a couple weeks ago. Car started revving high, put it in brake, car wouldn't shift out of park again. Had to get it toed. Mouse/chipmunk/squirrel got into air filter, chewed it all up. Stuck throttle open. Car was fixed, drove really well. Two weeks later, SAME THING HAPPENS!!!! Gonna be another $250 at least. Do they not want us to drive anymore? This is insanity. I have no choice but to park outside. Is this going to happen until I'm broke? 2001 Honda Civic.
