dont forget you can capture enemy ships and in worst case capture and scrap them for resources in the mothership

Im stuck on this battle too

I failed to understand why they'd make it so no big ships can cross the area but the small ships would just get shredded by the missile destroyer

It was to make people creative with their tactics on how to deal with this problem - there are numerous ways how to deal with this mission. some involve creative use of force - some of tactics - some rely on duping the fleet - some on it's destruction. Bascially it's a test of players creativity or lack of it in which case heavy toll is exacted (which usually means reloading :D).

That's the point, if there was no MDD the solution to the objective is too easy.
