Hey y'all, I'm Meagan. My husband Andy and I grew up in rural NC and as newlyweds, decided we wanted something more than the typical American lifestyle. So we started growing our own food, I learned to can and so started this passion of food preservation and knowing where our food comes from.
Even though we grew up around this lifestyle, we still had to learn for ourselves, the ways of our ancestors before us. We now grow a huge portion of our food, including our own meat.
High society and MSM want you to think you don't have time to grow, preserve and cook your own food from scratch, but I am here to help you along the way. As a working mother of 2 on a busy little farm, there is time, we just have to prioritize it.
Through my weekly videos, I'll show you how to prepare easy meals cooked from scratch, tips on preserving your garden harvest and the occasional farm video. Live life on YOUR terms

    i remember going to my grandma and grandpa's farm, in the early 70's, and they actually had a root cellar built into their basement, which for the most part was an exact duplicate of the upstairs, as they basically moved into the basement suite to beat the hot saskatchewan summers. anyway, i remember one of my coolest memories was when grandma needed potatoes for supper, and me and my two sisters (mostly me) would race down into the root cellar and pull potatoes out of the dirt. i wasn't a farm kid, but we spent all our summers on the farm, from 0-18, on my relatives farms. great times and memories, and i participated in much of what you present here on your channel. your son and daughter were me and my sisters, 50 years ago. your children are blessed. and that you home school them, even more so.

    You are so blessed to have a root cellar! With the humidity, do your lids ever rust?

  • @TrueGritAppalachianWays

    @TrueGritAppalachianWays

    I have some rust occasionally, usually my lids will last about 3 years, then they really show their age. If they start having a ton of rust on them what ever is in the jar becomes pig food. I am trying to get better about keeping inventory on my stuff so I'm rotating through at least every other year! Thanks for watching!

    I've been looking forward to hear how you both updated the basement. I think the shelves with the worm holes in them fits the history of the house, wood from your land. The looks match the whole picture. They look like they have been there where they belong, being useful for the family. So very nice, hand crafted, it could not look any nicer guys. Enjoy!

    We just organized our "pantry" this weekend. Wow! What a chore. We don't really have root cellars in eastern Oklahoma because they tend to become wading pools. The shelves look great and you're right home canned food weight DOES add up fast.

    Our root cellar is under an out building and is concrete but is too wet to store roots so I built shelves from store bought lumber over 20 year ago. It doesn't look as good as your shelves but so far they are holding up. The original ones had been eaten by termites so I had to use treated wood. This year I filled up all the pints and had to buy more, never thought I would ever have to do that, I still have some for hopefully canning some deer but the cellar is full. I have the roots in the cellar under the house like you do, Lookin good!
