Homemade Yum Yums

Yum yums are basically twisted spiral donuts with a slightly more flaky / fluffy texture than a standard donut and seem to be super popular at the moment. I'm sure there's other names for them around the World, but nothing really comes close to a homemade donut, that freshness of making your own dough from scratch, then drenching the yum yum in an icing sugar glaze makes it all worth it. Play around with the recipe if you try it out with different shapes and spirals, ultimately though, it tastes bloomin' epic!

Ingredients list:
550g plain flour, plus extra for kneading
2 x 7g sachets fast action yeast
275ml warm water
50g caster sugar
pinch salt
100g butter, room temperature, cubed
1 egg
Icing glaze
250g icing sugar
6tbsp water
For frying
Approx 600ml vegetable oil

    Hi Barry. In South Africa we call these Koek-sisters. We make them and after we fry them we soak them in syrup and cinnamon sauce. Ours are little bit smaller than a yum yum. But you can make giant koeksister.😋❤

    Barry, freeze your butter and grate it in... Clean hands and perfect bits throughout your dough.

    Another option is to take one of the solid ends, pull it through the slits and continue to repeat until you’ve completed a wrought iron sort of twisted pattern. It’s quite pretty, it’s how we make our traditional Norwegian cookies, fattigman bakkels, which are similar to these

    You know Barry, adding a little bit of cinnamon to the dough would kick these up a notch. Here in the states we cover these in powdered sugar and cinnamon and call them Tiger Tails or Tiger Twists.

    We call them bow ties here in the states 🥰! Well my experience 36 years in New York City and Nevada combined lol.

    We call them twists in the US, typically with cinnamon in the dough.
