Korean Corn Dog Recipe

Korean street food seems to just be instantly quirky, but always delicious! When you guys suggested I attempted this Korean twist on a corn dog recipe, yes, that's right it's called a 'Korean corn dog' (very original)... I just had to give it a try. A yeast like batter smothers either a hot dog or mozzarella for a meat free version (or both!), it's then scattered with french fry chunks, breadcrumbs, fried until golden and then smothered in ketchup, mustard and sugar. Sounds a bit strange, but again, this was simply outstanding. It shouldn't work, but did! Hope you give them a try and be careful!

@Barry Lewis, I do a fruit version of a corn dog. I use strawberries, Bananas, Kiwis, Pineapple, just any type of fruit you can put on a skewer and I make a sweet batter to coat the fruit. Then after they are done while they're still hot, I cover them in a dusting of powder sugar. If you wanted, you could have a chocolate sauce as a dip.. Very naughty, but so good

You should put the “dough” in a glass or measuring cup. It’s so much easier. If you like spicy try adding jalapeño or chili slices.

I bake almost all my own bread and a couple of tips I've picked up along the way might be of use if you haven't already heard them. I use an ordinary shower cap to cover my bowl while proofing my my dough, which saves on plastic wrap and is easier. Also, the best place I've found to let my dough rise is in my oven, turned off, with the the oven light on. Works every time. Just warm enough and no drafts. Hope you find this helpful PS Mr B is a Saint. lol

Panko breadcrumbs are made from bread that has been electrically cooked (ends up with no crust) so it's actually much lighter than normal breadcrumbs. Source: Adam Ragusea (check that video for the primary sources I guess) On another note, I heard that crunch. Panko or not, it was magnificent.

For America, we usually add sugar to the batter for corndogs, so might be easier than sprinkling on after it's fried. Love the idea of cubing french fries (chips) and adding those!

I'm actually from Seoul, Korea! Korean corn dogs are super different than others around the world but I'm very impressed that Barry got it! The thing I noticed though, is on the half hot dog, half cheese, the cheese is usually on the top part (the hot dog being skewered 1st). Also, usually, the potato dog is completely covered in the potato instead of a few random pieces. Even so, I'm still super amazed at how close these are to the real thing!

One suggestion, Barry: if you do this again, use chopsticks instead of bamboo skewers. They're much sturdier and easier to control when you're inserting them into the food you plan to fry, and you don't have to trim them. :D

Edmonton is also famous because the British rock band, Procol Harum recorded a live album with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, in 1971. Gary Brooker, from Procol Harum, recently passed away on February 19, from cancer. Procol Harum are famous for the songs, A Whiter Shade Of Pale, and Conquistador. Those Korean dogs look very tasty. Second comment: there's a UK-based Korean channel called Korean Englishman. They have/had a Korean street toast stand in London. They built a Korean-style Korean barbecue restaurant grill to use in their back yard. They feed small children salty kelp.
