Homemade Welding Machine - Simple Cordless Welding Machine 200A

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Homemade Welding Machine - Simple Cordless Welding Machine 200A
I made this welding machine from two old car bateries and alternator.
The way this machine works is very simple, engine is powering alternator and alternator generates 24 volts ac, then regulator converts it to 24v dc and charges batteries. Its almost same in any car or motorcycle. Im using only one phase of alternator (+-500W) but best choice is to use 24 V alternator.
Welding rods: 3.25mm
Amps: +- 200A
Also this can be used for powering DC to AC converter

I made this welding machine so i can use it at the cottage where i have no electricity, i will also add a converter so i can power other things. I definitely should have used a regular gasoline generator but in my country such a generator costs as much as 3 times than the parts for this. This is more like an experiment but I will definitely use it.

Can you have like 8 parallel (old, Dead batteries, and still wild w them, (maybe only 4) will a lawn mower sized be enough and the alternator to power it, AND is it safe to charge the batteries w AC, I think it would be OK if they are in parallel, because it's now more if a base and less chance of reactance.

Great job at being so negative people. That's exactly what this world needs. This man had an ideal and he got up and acted on it. That's the part of all this with the most importance. You see he could have sit there being negative, had a ideal and never acted but the fact that he acted is what made him successful. Congratulations sir !!! Continue acting on your ideas and you will continue being successful.

Using an older style general motors alternator with the internal regulator only requires a simple one wire hook up to work. They're also very inexpensive, plentiful, and are available in high amp outputs . Would have been a better option if one was available in his area

I respect all mechanical thinkers and inventors and those who aspire to make or invent something. For that you deserve a thumbs up. However for me If i was in a third world country and needed a welder and would have no chance of getting one but had these parts available, then to me this is the only way that would be a great idea. Being a welder for 40 years...and just speaking for me.... I think it best for me to leave the welding machine design to Miller, Hobart, Lincoln, Esab, HTP etc. Not only for supreme welding function but for welding safety also. You do deserve praise however for your mechanical thinking. I see how you use your ingenuity to make things out of left over parts or pieces that are usually "one off" and your idea, and i like that type of thinking. Thank You!

36 years ago I got my first job as a welder at a fence company. The company had an old commercially made portable welder very similar to this. Forget the brand, but it was simply a Briggs & Stratton engine with the shaft coupled to a GM alternator in a steel cage. No regulator, no battery and no rectifiers in the alternator. Obviously AC output, and I don't remember what it's maximum output was. Probably no more than 80 amps.

For people who like this sort of project, it’s important to note that delicate electronics like a laptop computer need a clean, square sine wave input. This generator will not provide that. It will give dirty power, which can damage many electrical devices. So if you build something like this, you will need to install a sine wave filter. They’re not cheap. If you’re only going to draw DC current, and then run it through a high quality inverter, that’s fine. But really good inverters aren’t cheap either.

Many years ago I ran tests on trying to weld with car batteries. Car batteries are chemical power sources and have totally flat DC output. No pulse whatsoever. This makes it hard to arc, in fact it doesn’t arc at all. Test I did in 1980s was I hooked two batteries in series ( like they have here ) to make 24 volt and connected a large 60+ amp battery charger to help give it a little pulse and help it to arc ( a little ) which it did and made it so I could make a couple fairly normal welds with 7014 rod. The next time I attempted this I needed to at least tack a bunch of tubing together , I had two real good batteries but only a little 4 amp charger. It didn’t work as good as before but I did manage to tack my tubing together with small spot welds, kind of ‘ scrubbing ‘ the spots because I had to keep it very short - no arc power. 6011 rods What I would like to see ( and I thought that was what they were going to do ) is for to see what it does with the generator running while welding? It should help it to arc and make it much more usable. Turning it off when welding didn’t make sense, unless striking an arc with the generator running burned up the brushes or something.

yes , because his open circuit voltage is only 24 volts .. any welder has at least 50 or more OCV ,, the arc is very sensible to distance changes ,,, when the ocv is higher as you get the elctrode farther the load decreases and the voltage goes up sustaining the arc at higher gap separation ,,,,

The weld will start off with the highest amps then fade away as the batteries charge declines. There is no adjusting amperage so there will be no consistent weld

No, you don’t weld with just batteries, unless maybe you have 48 volts worth or better. Chemical power DC doesn’t arc at ALL

First, you used a welder to make a welder... and you used a stick welder to make a medeocer stick welder (both can be used to scratch start TIG but you're not using either that way). Second, you don't need the batteries if you wire it correctly, I built a similar alternator TIG powered by a 5hp electric motor and used the alternator field coil to self energize once it was spinning. In my case I just mounted the whole assembly to a 2x8" board and used a headlight dimmer wired to the field coil circuit as an amp output control. Finally, you're not getting nearly 200A out of that. At near 100% efficiency (which this will get nowhere near) you'll stall that 6.5hp motor, and that belt as installed will slip and smoke WELL before that. Forget that fact that I know of very few conventional case alternators that will put out 200A and you're only using 1/3 of the output of that alternator. I'm guessing that you're limited to about 70 or so amps the way you have that setup.

Just think if you would have had a stick welder you could have thrown that rotten ass 2x8 away and your unit could have been as good as this one.

@@billwatts4066 Actually the 2x8 one had nice plywood and hardwood brackets and spacers and looked much nicer, the alternator and motor were clean and painted, and it had pretty decent output control. Besides needing to be plugged in/not running on gas, it was nicer than this one in almost every way.

@@mpikas well that's great and all but what has this guy done to you that he deserves all this negative criticism? He didn't rob a Bank or kill somebody. He made use of his time and materials and made something of use, shot some video while he done it and was kind enough to share.

@@billwatts4066 and I watched it and commented because his details aren't correct, possibly helping some of the people really impressed with this before they spend unnecessary money duplicating this (though maybe in some cases this might be the best way of getting from here to there). The fact is that just the 2 car batteries would make just as good a portable stick welder for emergency use, and the rest of the assembly would work without the batteries. Like it or not, the comment helps his video and channel by creating traffic. I'm not sure that my comment is all that negative and from the looks of it a few of the others commenting agree.
