    A few years back I was talking with a farmer/mechanic who remembered the first tractor coming to his farm. This was quickly used to pull a cart on the road that had previously been horse pulled. All went well till the wooden bearings set on fire! From then on they had to invest in steel bearings for tractor pulled carts on the roads, but he said previously most of their carts etc had greased wooden bearings & that these easily stood up to horse drawn power with all the advantages of low cost, ease of manufacture & replaceability etc. Thanks for sharing!

    You may want to add some small wooden buffers to your wagons. Just wooden blocks so you don't knacker your couplings if wagons collide. Link and pin couplings do work, but a hook and chain is perhaps a bit stronger. Somewhat difficult to form though, so for now I think you'll be alright.

  • @forestreese1704

    @forestreese1704

    With just a bit of welding these could become link and pin pretty easily. I wonder if a piece of flat bar could go between the wagons to keep them apart as well as together and just use the current coupling though

    Tim you continue to amaze me with the things you create. When I got older I dawned on me that designing something is all about compromise. You compromise on material. You compromise on weight. You compromise on longevity, etc. You could build a 2 ton trolley that would carry a car along perfect tracks, but it would cost a fortune and necessitate a locomotive. You compromised and designed something that will do the work you need at a price point that allows you to easily redesign if something doesn’t work out. Well done.

    I've often thought end-grain would be the best load-direction bearing surface. But, every picture I've seen of a wooden bearing has things arranged the way you have done it, so it must work well enough. I reckon a half-round cutout would be a big improvement, as would making a two-piece pillow-block, and using machined shafting instead of galvanised pipe. Diminishing returns at some point, though. I dare you to rig up a cheap bicycle speedometer, purely for the odometer function. It would be interesting to count the kilometres you put on these bearings.

    Excellent, a very pleasing outcome, I loved the oil hole cover plates, you've thought of everything! The brackets and the style of the axle boxes give it a very charming Postgate/Ivor the engine aesthetic. Rather than building lots of different types of wagons you may find Sir Arthur Heywood's approach useful: he had one standard wagon chassis design and built different interchangable tops to go on them for different uses. Flat tops, stackable box tops for loose loads, bolster bars so that two wagons could be used as bogies to carry long logs etc. On my little horticultural railway I even have wooden baskets which go on the wagons for taking out the laundry!

    Amazing what can be achieved with simple tools and a bit of brain power. I'd quite like to build one of these from my house to my local city centre but I think the local council might have some objections.

    It’s growing very nicely ! I like your brackets and idea of a wooden bearing ! What other type of cars are you making ? Maybe a dump car or a box car or lumber car and of course you need a caboose for your wife and dog and perhaps a small electric engine to pull your wonderful train ! Your R.R. Has endless possibilities to make it fun and serviceable ! 👍👍
