Homemade bandsaw second teaser look

Ойын-сауық

This is just another short clip from the same day. I am trying out a method of quarter-sawing an oak log that was destined for firewood. I thought I would practise the method, learn from it and may even get a few nice pieces.
I will get around to doing a walk through.

Thank you. I have a lot going on normally and making videos takes a back seat. I’m going to try and get some stuff out there, I know I really enjoys watching other people’s videos. 😋

This is simply fantastic, even the engine sounds nice, the fact that the holding system works very well is evident in this short video, and the Oak you are sawing here has some very nice fungus infection features in it, the problem you must have had when designing this is how big to make it, there is always a log that will be too big to handle, but you seem to have arrived at an ideal size here, how do you lift the log onto the bed of the saw ? Thanks Chris. I had specific criteria on some of the dimensions. For instance I wanted it to fit in a shed that is only 15’ long but could cut a log at least 10’ long. By the time you have a draw bar and losses due to the carriage width something has to give. Making a folding draw bar was the solution. It can take a 35” diameter log with a cut width of 31” and a throat height of 16”. These are generous sizes for such a compact mill. It took some working out and I had some good luck too. I have ramps on the mill and a couple of winches with mounting points to load logs. Now I also have a digger with a front end loader so I use that as it’s fast and easier. Appreciate your interest. Good questions asked. Clamps seem to work well and are fast to operate. Hopefully I can show this on a walk around to come.

@@tinkertime7165 Having ramps up onto the bed is a huge advantage, is the mill on wheels, and what do you think it weighs, the has to be a compromise on these things, unless you have unlimited storage space, but the size you can cut on this is very good, and for such a study and robust structure it should take the weight of an Oak log that size, so many of the portable saws on the market have been built down to a weight, and when a large log is put on them they fail. Many thanks for posting these inspirational videos. Chris B.

I did calculate the weight. From memory I think it is about 900kg (1800lbs). Yes it has twin axles.

Nice looking stick of wood. The motor has a nice note to it. An old Lister?

Thanks! It’s a twin cylinder water cooled Yanmar diesel, 15hp. Originally from a lawn tractor.
