Homemade Air Heater. AC/DC Powered. 150F/65C. Ceramic/Alum. "Ripple' Air Heater (solar/batt. option)

Ғылым және технология

DIY Air Heater. Aluminum-finned Ceramic Air Heater with stand. on/off grid. AC/DC powered. low watt, high heat, space heater. personal space heater, now with bigger stand and larger fan. 150F/65C output temps (similar to a home furnace vent). great little desktop space heater and very easy to make!
Uses a 12v/70w/6a PTC Ceramic 'ripple' heating element - along with a 12v/1.2w/0.1a 40x40x28mm hi-flow case fan. similar to one i did a couple of years ago but now has a bigger stand a more powerful fan and professional wires/connectors. works both 'on' and 'off-grid' so it can be powered using a 12v battery. *a lead acid 'deep cycle' battery or a lithium (LiFePO4) battery is best. ...it can also just be hooked straight to a 12v solar panel. total draw of unit is only 6.1 amps (6.1 ah/per hr) so it can be used in an automobile. just plug into the cars 12v power socket and you're 'good to go'.
*any 12v power socket that can deliver 6.1 amps or more will run it. the power socket in an auto is usually rated to 15 amps so you can run two units at the same time if you want to. Element: 12v/24v Ripple PTC Ceramic Air Heating Element. Fan: ARCTIC S4028 6K(rpm) 40x40x20mm. 12 gauge red/black wire. (all on amazon). square dowels from home depot.

note: I've recently started working on a larger 20 Amp Air Heating unit. biggest one i've ever made. I'm hoping to have that video out in 2 to 3 weeks (probably by mid November). Air temps are 200-210F (93C-100C) in early testing with a very strong breeze (dual fans with speed control). runs on LifePO4 batteries, 400 watts of solar panels or AC (with dedicated power supply).

The optional detailing is mandatory. It looked especially cool with the orange/black speckle look at 02:06. Great project, as always, thank you for sharing, much appreciated 👍🏻

hi and thank you! thanks for letting me know your thoughts on the detailing. the abstract 'speckle look' is the final version. i thought it looked pretty cool that way too so i left it. i got that effect using a wooden toothpick of all things. no paint brush used.

I get very little direct sun here in winter because of pine trees to my south. I had wanted to build some sort of direct solar panel powered DC heater for my camper or a sand battery type device to store the heat. I`ve noticed that my 600w bucket water heater heats up my bathroom in winter by the time the water is hot enough to bathe. My emergency heat plan for winter storms right now is an electric blanket and 200w Lasko mini space heater and my various solar batteries. I can`t depend on any other fuel source because I have no transportation and can`t afford fuel on SSI disability. I did check at the only store within miles and a 4 gallon tank of propane is 22 bucks. But right now I can`t afford a heater, hoses, filters, etc. And there`s very little natural firewood nearby...I counted two large oaks and three small ones in the area here that I can gather dead limbs from. I got the only gas generator I could afford three years ago and it burns five gallons of gas a day and that costs a lot extra for the 2-stroke oil...way more than propane. So I`ve never used it. If I can rewire my solar setup for my 300ah Ampere Time battery and get a whole lot more solar panels to soak up the 2 hours of direct sunlight I get I might have a chance to have power I can make use of. But the panels will have to be larger than the 100/200w 12v ones I use. Can`t put those in series here in winter because the sun hits a very small area. I bought my solar batteries thinking I would be on another lot with plenty of sun.

Sorry to hear that Consider getting a Zippo hand warmer,25c of fuel gets you like 12 hours of 140 degree heat Cheap HW bottles are great Also Fortress clothing makes the best baselayers in the world If you Google the PALS system of clothing, you can make your own amazingly warm clothes /blankets /sleeping bags out of open cell polyurethane Best of luck Be safe and be well

Consider getting an electric kettle for 20$ to heat up water for hot water bottles as well

Seems as though you could do something similar with an Aluminum radiator filled with glycol and a 12 volt fan. Excellent description and build, thank you

Great Job with that Project. Please keep up the good work ! ! One potential area of improvement for many of your projects is to measure the sound with a meter and buy a fan that is quieter even if it costs more money.

hi there. just a quick note on the fans. the fans i use in my projects are all pretty quiet and just sound like regular fans. the fan in this project is no exception. *the reason they sometimes sound louder than they are is 100% due to my video camera. the camera has its dual recording microphones placed (or built-in) directly on the front of the camera (under the lens) and because of that the camera picks up the sound of the motor as if you're putting your ear up to it. in reality though, the fan just sounds like a regular small fan. it's got a 'smooth relaxing sound and sounds the same as the fans they use in small store-bought heaters. (if I'm more than 3 feet away from it i can't even tell if it's on or not).

hi. yes, it works good. keeps me nice and warm while sitting at the computer desk. my next video is of a much larger (20 amp) heater. it's also 12v and runs off grid. that one is more of a room heater. video will be out in a couple of weeks.

Any idea how this compares to heat pump efficiencies? I’m thinking of a portable version and how it would compare to a vehicle’s heater (tesla uses a heat pump, others do not). Your solution seems simpler but need to know how it compares from efficiency perspective.

this particular fan is a 'higher end' fan. seems to match up almost perfectly with the element. you can use a standard computer case fan though.
