I'm a horticulturalist, and a loonggg time viewer of the channel (since your uni days) and you're doing such a great job! I have a quick tip for you, if you'd like your wooden planters to last longer you can nail pond liner or something waterproof on the inside before putting the soil in so it doesn't get wet. Just make sure to put holes in the bottom for drainage. Probably too late to do this now, but no biggie! When you refresh your planters in Autumn/Winter you can pop it in then 😊

Hello from Hawaii! Just found you recently and love your content very much and your house is so cool. I'll be 70 in June and have been loving landscaping, and just nature generally, my whole adult life. Here's one tiny piece of advice that maybe others have given you so excuse me if I'm being repetitious, but make sure to put a saucer under any plants that you put on the deck. If any moisture starts getting through the drain holes onto the decking it will rot the wood very quickly. Also, the same goes with those cedar boxes that you just planted out with flowers. If there's nothing to keep the water from draining onto the deck you've got a real problem there. Otherwise everything looks just beautiful!!🎉❤

When the snapdragons finish blooming you can try snipping off the faded blossoms. Short snapdragons will bloom again when you do this. After snapdragons bloom the second time then you can let it go to seed. The snapdragons you will get next year will be pastels. The same thing holds for pansies that are brilliant colors. The pansy seeds that germinate will be pastels. Sweet alyssum is a crucifer. If you look at the flowers you can see that each individual flower makes a tiny cross. X marks the spot. When the sweet alyssum starts going to seed shear the spent flowers off. The sweet alyssum will then bloom again. If left alone sweet alyssum will reseed itself. The flowers on other crucifers such as radishes and mustard when they are going to seed (bolting) have that characteristic X shape. Strawberries are native to North America and it is a member of the rose family. The flowers are either white or light pink with five petals. Alliums (onions, chives, shallots, leeks, ramps) are poisonous to dogs and cats. Grapes, raisins, chocolate are poisonous to dogs. Flowering maple (Abutilon) is a member of the mallow family.

I am really tired of the cynicism and cattiness that is a product of a combination of three years of COVID-19 and eight years of Donald Trump dividing the country. A better use of your time would be to live each day to the fullest and to appreciate your fellow man. We all have special gifts and value to bring to the world if we so chose.

I love listening to your voice, it’s very calming. I have a toddler now and am very intentional with what goes on the TV and your ambience is what I want to bring to the energy of our home 💚

The bamboo in the planters is actually genius. It reminds me of hügelkultur so I'm sure as the wood decays, those beds will become super fertile. For other planter beds, you could add compost and leaves above the bamboo to really embrace that technique lol

yes that is what i was trying to remember but then composting material takes nitrogen from the soil so i wondered if there was a period while it broke down that wouldn't be so good?

@@gigis.garden oh i didn't know it would deplete the nitrogen. they could try adding a nitrogen-fixing plant to the bed then if that becomes a problem. there are plenty of different kinds and many of them are edible

I was just scrolling at utube and I saw your video about vacation to vietnam, I'm not subscribe yet when I watched it , But upon hearing your voice . My stressful mind surprisingly relaxed and I just felt like calm and sleepy. I always have insomnia and thanks so sleeping is really hard for me. Now I'm subscribed and will watch all of your videos specially when my mind can't seem to turn off.

Love your work, Benji. One small tip: the Billy Buttons are an Australian native and so do not need a lot of water. They are not fussy but maybe won't do so well with the flowering plants that have higher water needs. Australian natives need a fertiliser low in phosphoros so aged compost/manure or something organic rather than chemical fertilisers. They're perenial so I hope you enjoy them for a long time.

Hi Benji (and Chris and Theo!). I'm also one of those who discovered your channel from the Q&A vid (it somehow randomly appeared in my recommended home feed). Life has been really really overwhelming for me these couple of years but watching you explaining the plants and looking after the house and garden, and be so chill about them helps me to take many deep breaths and learn slowly to find my own ways to be chill with how I spend my days and life, be it at work or during the weekends. It always amaze me how you could recall most of the plants' genus and species name on the spot. You must love them a lot . I did biodiversity at uni, and could only mostly recall the latin name of my thesis subject, and also maybe the easily recognizable animals like panthera tigris or elephas maximus 😅. I thought it was just a random burnt house, which happened to be next to your place. Didn't know both of you were originally planned to move there 😮. Yup, it is water spinach! Maybe stir fry it with salted fish, garlic, and bits of shrimp paste. You might wanna try the "Kangkung Belacan" (Water spinach with Shrimp paste) recipe Oh, this is my 1st time seeing a rosemary flower🤩

I'm going into my 4th season of outdoor gardening, primarily growing food in the Bay Area, CA. Since you're interested in growing food in a relatively small space, I'd strongly suggest planning. Look up your county's month-by-month growing guide for a planting schedule. Draw a birds-eye view of your space. Make a list of edibles that you actually eat and flowers you want to grow. See if any of them make good companion plants. Once you figure that out, you can fill in your drawing to help guide what goes where. Best of luck to you.

PS, it's never a good idea to leave a plant with its roots exposed. Roots do not like air they like to be hidden so try to plant things pretty quickly once you uproot them. Typically, I will dig the new hole first before I even dig up a plant just to avoid the roots being exposed to the air. And PPS, Benji is the cutest!!

Ello from the coast of the UK lovely, you have beutiful natural energy.☀️As you mentioned getting advice for outdoor gardening, the best way to fill your raised beds is with many different layers of a variety of organic matter. The bamboo you did in the bottom is fine and I've no doubt your flowers will bloom, but before adding the soil bag, consider maybe adding smaller sticks/woodchip, organic own made compost, leaf mulch, spent soil that's got no nutrients left,(rejuvenates it due to the mixture), potash from firepits, used animal straw, manure, small rocks/smashed terracotta then finally the bag soil. The more different layers you add then the more activity happens underground to break it all down, makes that truely scrummy soil. Plus all the different grades of wood in the bed mean that the mycelium have a greater and quicker chance at taking root, which connects all your flowers/crops together. Hope I didn't come across as nitpicking, found you the other day and just want to spread the love as you do.❤

YAY FOR BENJI GARDENING CONTENT!! I grew cosmos my first year of raised bed gardening and I'm also doing nasturtium this year :) One helpful tip for great flower growth is to regularly fertilize (I really like foxfarm liquid fertilizer!). If you want to try some vegetables, I HIGHLY recommend cherry tomatoes and peas for your first year -- the abundance that you can grow gives you a lot of confidence!!!

Something that I think every new gardener should do is learn to start from seed yourself. A single plant start can cost you five dollars but a packet with hundreds of seeds inside often costs less than two. If you get reusable seed trays to start in, then every new plant you grow only ends up costing a few cents!

ooooh i love the balcony/rooftop cottage garden plans 😍 such a perfect addition to the native yard project and ornate indoor collection! it's like a triptych of the most intriguing plant concepts i can think of, and all in their most adequate environments 🌿🌷🌺 i don't have much experience with outdoor gardening but i love watching everything with carol klein in it 😇 such a typically british dame with that enthusiastically hands on charm! i distinctly remember being impressed by her planting a container much like yours with the simple idea of NOT doing the classical 'small ones in front, tall ones in back' tiered layout and playing with depth and texture instead and it turned out so spectacularly gorgeous over time 🎉 i guess that kind of thing is for pretty advanced gardeners, but i mean you have all that houseplant arrangement talent/experience so i can definitely see you getting something like that spot on easy first try gg 🤗 also couldn't help but happy-squeal at your saying 'love you' to chris 😁💞✨

A suggestion for low-cost, self indulgent pleasure & stress relief - - Double-case your pillows. A lower cost (300 thread count) 1st, then a higher quality 500-600 TK 2nd. Iron the top pillow case. It 's very soothing and relaxing at night to lay your head on a pillow with a freshly ironed pillow case.

I’ve been gardening since I can remember with my mom. The bamboo idea is so genius, we always just added used flower baskets. Made from coconut I believe. One thing about snapdragons, they’re the most prettiest flowers but they are like weeds. When it gets windy, the seeds move and then they plant themselves. Just be aware next season. Also if you get slugs, you can put used sandpaper or just rough up the flower bed’s edges, they don’t like rough surfaces. I learned this from Martha Stewart, she has so much info in her magazines.

Love that you are composting. Remember that herbs and vegetables will need at least 6 hours of sun. Leafy veggies can handle partial sun

what a lovely video ❤❤.. When I have to fill large planters especially if the plants I am going to use have shallow roots I have used the polystyrene packing you get around electronic goods to fill the space a bit. I think if you use organic material like the bamboo, it will take nitrogen from the soil around it to use to decompose which might make it harder for the plants to get goodness? but then that is what a Hugel mound is in permaculture. Hope that makes sense.... ps I love moss too, I have a rotting wooden table I put bits of moss the birds dig up onto and it takes root and grows 🌿🌿

Experienced garden consultant here. Take out the bamboo in your raised bed and fill it top-to-bottom with a raised bed mix! Bamboo (and wood/woodchips) will deplete your nitrogen and your plants will struggle!

Wild/native strawberries are an incredible treat. They’re so small, which makes them even more exciting. The flavor is so different than cultivated varieties, almost like a pineapple in my opinion.

So Nasturtium returns to your collection, Benji! 🥰 I too love this plant for its leaves as well the beautiful flowers! The cottage garden idea fits well! The fig tree won’t be bothering you anymore since the white couch has been shifted elsewhere. Looking forward to a beautiful and a colourful terrace garden!

I'm in socal so if you ever want to post the dude who sold you the redwood planters I would def check them out, those are so pretty!! Also- Charles Dowding has a "no dig garden" channel and it works, it is the same strategy you use with the cardboard layer and bamboo layer (mulch layer)... and I also follow Roots and Refuge Farm who teaches you soooo much about gardening! Hey green onions are really easy to grow like when you use is you take it out of the dirts and cut like 5 centimeters away from the roots then you can either leave it in water for a few days or re plant them instantly if you have the time and they’ll just grow right back. They’re really low maintenance and they grow super fast Happy to be following your gardening journey :) Have a good day

The water spinach, if we're both not mistaken, is called kangkong in the Philippines and it's really versatile! Besides stir fry (try it with garlic!), you could also fry and salt it. It's also good with soups and stews because the broth would get into the hollow stems 👍🏻
