How did you start out in audio engineering? I'd love to know!
@leefchapman
Жыл бұрын
I was always passionate about music and learnt it throughout secondary school and went on to learn more at college. I also had to apply for other courses and felt that "music tech" would have been something I would enjoy - I did! I soon learnt the boundless possibilities between music and technology and started to experiment as a solo musician.

Many thanks to you, Ali for all that you’ve given to Philly 🙏🏽 From my perspective, you and Barb at Tin Angel blazed a trail for lady engineers on South Street. Thank you for sharing your story. I started audio engineering by moving from a major market (Philly!), where I was making a living as a working musician, to a small market abroad where I was new and performing and teaching wasn’t nearly as doable. Three years later, after going through COVID and having our first child, I wanted to stay working in music but needed something more flexible and sustainable. After thinking on various options, I landed on mixing as a pathway to engineering in general and eventually producing. Grateful to hear about Ali’s path and welcome it as inspiration for my own and other engineer/producer’s journeys!

Nice interview and keep them coming also can relate that's why Ali's journey hits a note with me....Our eldest Daughter did Musical Theatre for 7 years (Soprano), from 11yrs to 18yrs then got on a course that wasn't for her....Then went and did an Art and Illustration Degree....She's now a Professional Illustrator and has been for over 10 yrs, never give up! There's a place for everyone, sometimes it takes a different journey to get there.
Most interesting interview/engineer in a minute. This was rad.

Hey Ali my name is Maguire too ... I am still trying to get my Home studio working but .. it is more of a Hobby .. I am 67 & retired pensioner so really not fair to spend money I do not earn on Studio Budget .. But I started off just Guitar Singer / Songwriter & had such horrible experiences in studio's from ridiculous to just Money grabber's So I decided I had to be the Boss .. My wife was the 1st one to point out that having finally got a Song recorded I had forgotten to Perform it as the Artist .. Still trying & grabbing tip's & trick's from wherever I can . I actually live less than an Hour away by Car from the Famous Rockfield Studio's where one of Warren's much loved Records Queen's " A Night at the Opera was recorded " but since I can't drive lol & do not have a big budget I just keep on trying on my own .. I wish you all the best with your Career from another Maguire Scot's / Irish .. cheers

Wait, hold up. At 2:50 when she says she's from Allentown, PA. My hometown is literally an hour drive up north in PA. I have an Apollo (Solo in my case) and I see pros like Ali using a mic preamp in front of the Apollo, which also has a preamp... how does that work? Is it literally taking the audio out from her UA preamp into the mic/line in of the Apollo, or is it done some other way? Or does the UA preamp go straight into the Mac?

Do you really need an acoustically treated room when 90% of all music listeners listen to their music in untreated rooms. ;) I think only when there are huge problems with bass frequencies and reverb reflections. Think about it. Or ask people like Junkie Xl! ;) Greetings from Germany
@Producelikeapro
Жыл бұрын
Junkie XL has a HUGE room. Acoustic treatment is required so you can accurately monitor otherwise you will be going back and forth when doing various mix translation tests. If you can only invest in a little acoustic treatment, also try digital calibration - or just use headphones. At the end of the day, these are tools to help you get your mixes finished more efficiently.

@@Producelikeapro Yes that's right, it's always a good idea to check the bottom end with headphones. My Superlux e.g. have 10hz to 30000hz frequency! Then I hear everything that my Adam TV5 cannot reproduce in terms of frequencies.
