Setup & demo of budget BJJ / wrestling / judo dojo - how to make home grappling gym! Equipment: I use 3 x folding mat 8ft by 4ft by 2" (2.4m x 1.2m x 5cm) with Velcro strips [aka hook & loop fasteners] to create my own DIY matted area. *Where to buy similar mats 2021: www.amazon.com/We-Sell-Mats-T... Good for grappling & mixed martial arts training at home for both kids and adults. Mats are easily portable, folding neatly into a small space for storage. Mine cost £210 new from Amazon UK including delivery. (Optional extra: large tarpaulin to go under mats).

    Update summer 2021: the previous mats I recommended are no longer available. These are the most similar mats I can find currently: www.amazon.com/We-Sell-Mats-Tumbling-Exercise/dp/B00ICQGYGS (US) www.amazon.co.uk/Cannons-UK-Foldable-Gymnastics-Mat/dp/B012FW9W2C (UK) (unfortunately the UK mats don't seem to have velcro attachments)

    Damn that sounds annoying. There's always use for extra mats though - the setup you see in this video was pretty good, but would be even better with 1cm mats underneath the gymnastics mats. Alternatively extra mats are useful against the walls for padding there

    I found a really cheap alternative to this. On eBay you can purchase 8x4 feet crash mats for only 26 quid. Crash mats are great as they have padding and protect you during falls. They're not foldable ofc, but really cheap. I bought two.

  • @ChrisPT

    @ChrisPT

    It depends how thick/dense the crash mats are. I already had some which you can see around the sides in this video (yellow mats). But personally I would recommend the gymnastics mats over these as I think their cushioning is better overall, plus they join together. Also people may be able to get them a lot cheaper than I did.

    @@ChrisPT I agree with what you mention. But the mats I purchased are ace, especially if you have carpeted floors already. They're 2" thick and are like wrestling mats. I've trained in 3 academies. The first one had puzzle mats, the second one had professional mats that you'd find in good bjj academies, and the one I'm currently in has wrestling mats. They are far better than puzzle mats. And I can compare them to wrestling mats due to look and feel. Disadvantage is that you can't attach two together, but I did purchase some velcro. I only bought a grappling dummy and these mats as I don't know when we'll get out of quarantine.

    Yes having a soft carpet underneath helps with the crash mats, and my crash mats are much better than puzzle mats as well. But the softness also means that a heavy concentrated impact (e.g. landing hard on the hip or shoulder) may effectively go straight through them to bang against the surface below. Whereas the gymnastics mats have more bulk so I found them a happy medium

    @@ChrisPT are these suitable for BJJ /grappling do you think. ? I was think the heavy lateral forces would cause great gaps etc that wouldn't be great for grappling . Also was thinking 50mm might be a little soft as you need some density in the floor when grappling. What do you think . ? Thanks
