Home Design Trends to Avoid | 10 Trends That Are Dating Your Home and What To Do Instead

I’m excited about todays video and believe there are small things we can do to elevate the look and feel of our homes! I hope you find my tips helpful ❤ Let me know what idea is your favorite or if you have any design questions I can help with!
Thanks so much for your very specific examples and visuals! So helpful. On themed decor - we have a midcentury+Indian home that's fairly classic, but we allowed ourself ONE outrageous detail - a ceiling-mounted pendant light in our living room. It's a monkey hanging from a rope and holding the light bulb in its hand. It's so outrageous and tongue in cheek that we just had to have it when we saw it. It somehow doesn't become theme-y because the colours work well and we don't have any other animal prints or tropical elements in the space. (It's also a super awesome conversational piece!) But the moment we were to introduce a palm tree print on a cushion, or a side table in the shape of a hipppo - that's it, we've crossed into a "tropical/animal" theme. I'm glad and proud of myself for realising not to cross that line!

I absolutely love a conversational piece!! That one sounds so fun ❤
Spot-on! Especially the tip on artificial plants. Though I do think the feature wall can work if done correctly - it really depends on the interior architecture of the space.

Place the pieces you love...Remember the story of the item..A trip, a garage sale, a friend gift, a relative gift...love will be able to feel those that visit your home... Great video...😊😊😊
I like your tips and the way you give examples of how to replace those trends with better options. Thanks.

Thank you! ❤
You should always do what you love and enjoy.
Agree almost all around. However, I think an accent wall as a focal wall is just fine. A black wall behind a bed with some great artwork and contrasting lamps on night stands looks great. Very few people want an all-black room.
Have your home reflect your tastes and personality, don't imitate an influencer or designer's home.......so keep the feature wall, word art, faux plants etc. At least your home will be different from all the white on white minimalist, black and white minimalist interiors on social media 😉

I agree! Life is far too short to try and keep up with trends! What I find ironic is a lot of "influencers" will end their videos with "decorate your home to your tastes," AFTER telling you everything your home shouldn't be. On the other hand, I also agree a little bit of trend keeps your home from feeling antiquated, but I'm not going to compromise my true interests and finances to follow each one. I like what I like, trend or not.

Ashley gave excellent examples of what to do instead.
Decorative molding definitely adds more value and interest than accent wall IMHO

I love beautiful moldings as well, they add so much character ❤
GREAT SUGGESTIONS I CAN SEE WHY. IM INSPIRED TO MAKE THOSE CHANGES THANK YOU ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank YOU!!
In the thumbnail tho, the design you gave a checkmark to was described by some as dated not too long ago. I think people should just embrace what makes them happy in their homes and not worry about following trends or what "experts" say they should do.
#10!!!! Yes! Yes! Yes! Great timps, thank you Ashley!!!

I will be avoiding the themed room, the fast furniture and the matching metals for sure 😅

Me too !
I'm a new subscriber. I love your dresses 👗 Ashley.
Agree with everything except .... the feature wall Designers have been saying they hate the feature wall for 15 years, meanwhile, folk still like them. It's less paint/paper, easier to change & defines an are in a multi- use/ open plan room. It can also anchor a room if you've got a rather featureless space
I like the idea of not buying the entire bedroom set. Getting ideas from Pinterest an putting your spin to your own taste.

Absolutely! Me too ❤
I am delighted to find you and have subscribed. You validate my style of decorating SO much it is like having a big hug! I thought I was the only one who did mixed metals etc. People have no idea how adding brass to a room with nickel or brushed stainless softens it and adds that touch of sophistication. I bought a 1920’s curved sofa and redid it in a bargain Italian olive damask from on online fabric outlet and some (ignorant) people hated it…hahaha..and now look at what’s in style, curved sofas and various shades of green! Love your videos ❤

I love to hear that!! The sofa sounds fantastic! Just keep doing what you love 💚
Yes! Signage and fake plastic plants...
I love word art…although I do have only one piece in my home…because I think it can look too themed in a home. I agree with the fast furniture. I try to get quality pieces that will last. I really like your last tip. “Let your decorated home honor you.”
I LOVE this video.

Question re wallpaper accent wall behind bed headboard. I hear it’s a no-no, but what if the surrroinding walls are painted in dark blue Limewash style to compliment it vs just white?

I think that accent wallpaper behind a bed sounds lovely! And the dark blue limewash addition, perfection!
I agree with everything you suggested Except, wall paper on an entire area. Even if I love the wall paper I think it looks too grandma's house no matter what the print when it's on all 4 walls. Plus if I'm home shopping I immediately think ugh, taking that off is going to be a chore.
Accessorize for your interests, not same pieces everyone else has from chain stores
Dear Ashley, I have a question about accent walls. I have a guest house in Port Townsend Wa, and it's in the middle of a forest, and can be very grey especially during the winter. The prior owners painted the living room wa yellow, and the rest of the room a yellow undertoned cream. It does feel like sunshine during grey days. Do you think I should keep it, paint the whole place cream, or a totally different color. I love taupes. Also the floor is bamboo which is a sort of orangey color. The cream seems to have neutralized it. Can you give me any advice. I love your design aesthetic. I have very eclectic taste and mix modern, vintage and antique furniture. Thank you, Noelle
Another amazing video. Ashley, I loved your advise on wall art. Please tell me that the art I have of cafe fronts in italy (oops) and my huge oil painting of people strolling down the streets of paris with the Eiffel Tower in the background on a rainy day is not considered mass produced art (oops.) I'm freaking out 😢 probably because I know what you'll say.

I truly believe that art is such a personal thing. If you buy a piece of art, no matter how it’s made or what the subject matter is and it makes you happy then that’s all that matters! At the end of the day living with what you love and having your home reflect you is really what’s most important!! ❤️❤️
One question: I do have a BM Hale Navy above my fireplace just so it will bring in some warmth that goes with the blues in my living room. Is that a no no? Should I paint it the same color as the rest of the living room? I guess you could call it an accent wall, but a tiny one...lol
I feel prey to a word sign - whoops. Gone today! TY😊
Fast furniture like ikea that influencers peddle online will not stand up to heavy use

Hi Mary and Ashley! I respectfully disagree. I think my ikea furniture is going to last way after I'm gone! Love your channel Ashley! ❤️
Antique pieces are such better quality. Box store furniture is not even real wood. I love my plants, but I do have a faux mixed in.
This is so great!! I'm recommending to all of my Mormon sister wife friends!!!

Love ur dress? What is it?
Mix 1-2 metals using each for same purpose (lighting, plumbing, hardware), don’t mix finishes on same metal-looks like you didn’t get it right😂
@ashleychilders

😆 I like to keep all plumbing fixtures the same metal and then do something different but complimentary on the cabinet hardware or lighting!
I heard accent walls are back 🤷♀️
In your face theme rooms feel like restaurants, not a home to me
Please don’t put food still life art in Kit or DR, is not much different than word art IMHO
@PARoth2011

That’s a very generalized statement because it depends on the art piece, doesn’t it? If someone has a beautiful still life oil painting of apples or eggs in a basket etc by a good artist then that would be utterly gorgeous in the kitchen…I’ve done that for years.
