Home Depot Fights Shoplifting With New Technology

The outbreak of brazen smash-and-grab robberies and shoplifting is showing no signs of stopping, but some stores are taking extreme measures to stop would-be thieves in their tracks, including Home Depot. Spokesperson Christina Cornell gave Inside Edition an exclusive look at the company's latest crime-fighting technology, including a shopping cart with wheels that lock if you don't pay and bluetooth-activated items.

I regularly saw people push Walmart carts to the bus stop and leave them there, either on the sidewalk or in the ditch. It disgusted me because I knew that some carts were probably later stolen, and the Walmart had to send someone to gather the others. Either way it cost money. It was also theft, and these people apparently had no problem with that. They probably would have a meltdown if wheel locks were implemented.

My biggest concern for this is the activation of tools. Sounds like if there’s an error in the software and decides to lock up what would the average consumer do, contact support and they’ll tell them your tool didn’t work because it’s not activated it might be stolen. How’s a consumer supposed to prove besides a receipt? Feel like everything we own one day is going to be licensed to some higher authority(company) and they will decide whether the thing I bought will work or not.

That's my concern as well. It has to be able to be deactivated because otherwise products cannot be returned and resold, so what happens when these tools start to go bad and deactivate themselves? The locks probably don't have an active power supply so it's probably something comparable to an NFC tag meaning that it will just respond to the appropriate device meaning that anyone with that device could lock or unlock the tools so of course the bad guys will get them eventually. And can you imagine the harm if someone used a signal amplifier to remote disable all the power tools in a neighborhood or a work site? I know one thing for sure. Next time I buy a power tool I'm going to make absolutely sure it doesn't have a Bluetooth lock. If it has the lock I'm not buying it.

This is hilarious. Honestly you really think the thieves aren’t watching this video. I work at home depot. People that steal just grab the item and walk out the store. In front of managers and employees. And we can’t do anything about it besides watch and continue with our day. Unless you want to lose your job.

I can confirm on this. As workers at Home Depot, we were told to only watch the shoplifters and just report it to the managers. Not make any moves to interact with them or even stop them.

Was thinking this the whole time, I mean it sounds legit but how's it supposed to be effective when you're reporting it to the world?

I worked at Lowes a while ago and the corporation stole from me every day. They took a whole hour of my time and only gave me $10 for it. Escape man

Well if home depot ever start setting the price for products they sell then maybe. But so long as the manufacturer is the one who makes the price then it wont change.
