Quite possibly the greatest win of Holmes' career.

Holmes' win over Ken Norton was in my opinion the most significant of his career. That bout was an epic war, with a brutal 15th round that showed Larry had the goods to be a true champion for years to come.

Achieving this victory at 40 makes it that much more special. Holmes’ top 5 wins imo: 1. Ken Norton (70s heavyweight great) 2. Ray Mercer (highly rated 90s heavyweight) 3. Earnie Shavers (hardest puncher of all time) 4. Tim Witherspoon (3rd best heavyweight of the 80s) 5. Gerry Cooney (devastating puncher and underrated operator)

Mercer became a better fighter as a result of, he showed this with Holyfield & Lewis.

Holmes won & fought well in spurts though i didn't like his tactic of hanging on the ropes & looking to counter, i'm surprised the referee allowed him to get away with it, he tried the same manoeuvre with Holyfield but it didn't work as he was too smart to buy into it.

Кто такой Моррисон по сравнению с Холмсом? Да просто сильный панчер. Холмс бы и его сводил в школу.

this Holmes that had 5 competitive bouts with training in-between each bout gives prime Tyson problems no matter his age 💯 not the 2 year rusty older Holmes

Tyson in ‘88 was in a different league to this Mercer, who likely underestimated Holmes as a direct result of Mike’s stoppage win. Larry only came back to boxing because Tyson had imploded, much as the wily old vet predicted he would.

Holmes was a great heavyweight but it’s not ‘easy math.’ It never is in boxing. Even a prime Larry had life and death struggles with fighters clearly below Tyson’s level such as Mike Weaver. Tyson generally outperformed Holmes against common opponents - Berbick, Spinks, Williams, although the latter two after Holmes was past his peak - and obliterated other top guys that Larry didn’t face like Tubbs and Thomas. But of course Holmes was a far more stable individual, and that resulted in him being a more consistent fighter with far greater longevity. People talk of prime Tyson but it’s doubtful he ever even reached it.

@@MarkElding-qs1ph yes it's easy math///anyone who is almost 40 with 2 years ring rust and gets in the ring with prime Tyson is getting knocked out/ just like if anyone almost 40 with 2 years ring rust and gets in the ring with prime Holmes or prime Ali is getting the head boxed of the shoulders so they won't be using head N shoulders

@@MarkElding-qs1ph death struggles haha no man that weaver bout was a highly competitive boxing match that ended with weaver crawling on the ground and getting beatin to death with the ref needing to stop the bout .. Larry won almost every round vs Trevor chicken dance scared of Tyson booblick.. Larry retired the same year he was robbed vs spinks man //spinks was taking a dump in his pants before getting in the ring with Tyson... this 88 Tyson vs tucker who had a busted right hand wasn't walking over a guy who could BOX that wasn't scared//in 86 James Tillis vs Tyson was a DRAW and Tyson hometown guy got the nod///Tyson was the most explosive heavyweight in the history of boxing BUT he wasn't top of the mountain//88 he still gets outboxed in a trilogy vs guys in his own era which includes the same couple top guys who beat him before just like evander real deal who beat him twice in the pros and also got the better of him in a short sparring session when Tyson was young like 17-18 years old ... the myth sits with some people//then the facts trump
