ahhh that is life and I love Mercer but looks like he took a fall, the punches had ZERO follow thru and the second "punch" did NOT land at all and the 3rd "punch" GLANCED off the top of Mercer's head, the first "punch" that started it had little on it and had no follow thru momentum. There are two possible explanations - the first "punch" hit Mercer in the temple and was enough to hurt him or he took a dive. The 3rd or fourth replay shows an angle where you can see the 2 and 3rd punches barely had contact. Briggs pulled back on the punches and Mercer did a phony stunned look moment hesitation to sell it as he prepared for his landing, nothing about it looked like a genuine ko to me but he was 44 yrs old here and the first temple shot might have hurt him legit, love the memories of all his prime fights though.

@@tonygajate5780 seems sad. Part of what makes fights and fighters and the whole game great is the relevance; the conversational energy that contributes to an atmosphere that everyone in the larger culture wants to watch. Just like in the music business, the endless rechewing-over the distant and long-settled past deprives the present of the oxygen and buzz that the past benefitted from when it was the present. It's a virtuous cycle; an era was considered "great" bc people cared about it, and more good things happened in response to that care; and that care lasted until history enshrined that era. This era seems poor and thin partly because it's starved of that care; while ever more energy is lavished uselessly upon previous ones. Seems like fight fans, like older music fans, forget the importance of their role in creating the culture they want, in the present. I hope that changes soon.

Not buying this one. I watched Mercer and Lewis beat damn hell out each other with Ray losing by only a draw or split decision. I watched Mercer suffer a broken jaw with hard hitting Burt Cooper with STILL WINNING THE FIGHT. And I watched him STOP Tommy Morrison ( The Left Hook Assassin!! ) after getting whooped for at least three rounds. Before this fight, only one time he visited the canvas and that was with Real Deal Holyfield with beating the count FAST!! Come on man!

@M Williams Sure he was fat and washed up. But he more than likely went down because he was fatigued, certainly not those baby punches he took took to the top of the head or temple while he was in the ropes. Washed up or not, those pillow punches aren’t what stopped Mercer. I make a comment here and suddenly I’m clueless with being called a fanboy while you know everything about boxing? Sorry Mr Zelenoff, don’t think so!

  • @dsnodgrass4843

It doesn't really matter now, tho'. FWIW, it was pretty clear what younger Ray was doing with Morrison; draining his tank until he got sloppy and...you know the rest. Far as this one goes; at 44 you're not taking many temple shots like that (they're harder than they look) and staying on your feet, no matter who you are. Briggs was not a George Foreman, but he was still a strong dude; and even Ray (who I liked a lot as a fighter, possibly best of all) probably fell for real. If he was gonna throw it, he would've chosen a better situation; maybe he just decided to go with it here instead. I can't blame him; old bodies ain't built for this sport.

@@dsnodgrass4843 Ur right man. I liked Ray as a fighter, I didn't like seeing him go like that. Those punches didn't look like they did anything.
