This was the era where hair dye was generally used by younger women (those who were in their 20's and 30's). The general mindset was that ladies of a certain age (ie: over 40) would let nature takes it course and let their hair go grey.
"Girls! It's up to you!!"
"Gray hair should be an asset rather than a liability." I wish women still aged gracefully.

Eyebrows are the thing that changes a face the most, keep your brows shaped, trimmed, and filled in, and you will always look better.

I watched recently some video and it was talking about how advertising of all products that women used to use made them feel very bad cause would only point out bad stuff about women, nothing like these days we dont get anyone on TV saying how hairy we are and MUST shave or that we HAVE to make those small lips look plumper with over lining cause no man will look at you lol now days advertising its all about loving yourself who you are but deeply down somewhere we know we are not perfect because of all that photoshoped crap everywhere making us think there is a perfect looking human beings in the world. Anyway advertisement is evil lol xx

Back then you have to realize they were up front with how they advertised things, they didn't make things sound appealing they were really up front with everything.
Gosh, I love this! :) But the "touch of eyeshadow" at 0:45 is mascara and false eyelashes :D It's also nice to see how the eyebrows were shaped back then, in a very "sad" descending way, making the eyes look teary... Lovely :)
I noticed in the early days of make-up in the movies, the look for eyebrows was very thin, penciled in. Now, the look is thicker and more natural look. Which I think looks better and not so fake.

Ronnie, it goes in cycles. in the 20's and 30's, they were thin. in the 40's through the 80's, they were fuller, and with the 60's being a little thinner. In the 90's through the early 2000's, they were very thin again, and full brows have recently come back into fashion.

Back then mascara was just a black brick of pigment, you needed to wet the brush and swipe it against the block of black to get the mascara- that's why all those old films have the great "mascara running down the face" scenes! I think dealing with that probably forced them to invent false eyelashes pretty quickly....

No, the women hired to be models in makeup tutorials were beautiful and graceful. I'm willing to bet an image of women created for commercial purposes doesn't match up 100% with what the average woman was really like back then.

Ok, first off, the first girl was wearing falsies in the after photo for sure. Which is fine, but he's making it out like 'a little eyeshadow & you're done!'. The lady with the grey hair was WAY over 40, & personally I think she looked better before. But they all looked great, I love how women dressed & wore their hair/makeup back then

Actually, the woman might not be anywhere past mid-forties. People aged a lot faster and a lot harder back then, and she would have been a young woman during the stress and rationing/poor nutrition of World War I. Bad diet and stress don't make for graceful aging.
@TheKazadoodle

He distinctly said - but you can't be over 45 ... so he wasn't saying she was 40, he was saying she's past 45, but didn't give her real age as that wouldn't be polite :) And that woman was definitely past 45, she was 55 to 60 easy. Yes, people did age faster, but not at supersonic speed.
@StellaWaldvogel
7 жыл бұрын
I don't think they aged faster. If anything, they'd have aged more slowly because they ate a lot less processed food and there wasn't a massive hole in the ozone. Look at Mae West, she didn't even make her first movie until she was almost 40. And a lot of actresses from the 1920's and 1930's still looked great decades later.
@FunSizeSpamberguesa
7 жыл бұрын
+Stella Waldvogel Mae West (and all the actresses of that era) wore a metric crap-ton of makeup. They look so perfect because they're literally painted that way -- that, and like today, some people just win the genetic lottery. West also never had to work hard for a living, and probably had a more consistently nutritional diet than many. Fresh produce was expensive, and its availability more limited than it is today, simply because they couldn't preserve it like we can now; while they ate less processed food, many also were to some degree malnourished -- unless they were rich. No such thing as sunscreen, makeup could have some terrifying ingredients (some mascara had *mercury* in it right up through the 1950's, and blush had vermilion, which is extremely toxic), and by World War II absolutely everyone -- and I do mean everyone -- smoked. All of those things age a person prematurely, and I can see it in things like pictures of my grandmother and great aunts at my age versus pictures of myself. (I'm 39, and they all look ten to fifteen years older than I do.)
@StellaWaldvogel

I agree that there were a lot of variables involved. You can't lump, say, Myrna Loy and the people in the Dust Bowl photos together. I'd like to see some solid research on the whole topic. For the record, one of my grandmothers lived into her 80's without a wrinkle in her face, the other had a lot of lines by 40. So yes, genetics. I think one thing that does age us badly now is having to hold a job AND be responsible for the kids and the housework and everything else. It does help to have time to rest and take care of yourself.
Gosh they thought women over 40 were ancient . Now 40s are the new 20s
They still used "old fashion sharpeners" for the pencils back them
The last woman was Rosalind Russell :)
