Hog Island Oyster Farm: North of San Francisco on Tomales Bay

The first thing tourists do when they arrive in San Francisco is head to Fisherman's Wharf for fresh seafood. But don't do that! Why go somewhere ultra-touristy when the oyster farms of Tomales Bay are only a drive north of San Francisco?
Join me for a tour of the Tomales Bay Oyster Company and Hog Island Oyster Farms for some of the best oysters in Northern California.

I was raised by the beach and I understand a lot about fishermen. My 93 year old dad has once been a Fisherman in his early years

As a local myself, I completely agree with zeene. This would be a great educational trip for the kids and I also like the smaller ones as well.

Was anyone else disappointed not to find tamales, not from vendors, but from their “natural habitat”? I’m aware of the difference in spelling & general natural impossibility of it all, but how blown would your mind be if you were told to “grab a tamale from that bush over there!” only to see them swaying off stems in the ocean breeze, warm from the midday sun? “It’s not a secret, just something we forget to tell folks that aren’t from around here.” i guess I’m silly & perhaps in the minority, but I would hate for my vast love of knowledge to ever klll my sense of whimsy - stay adorable, folks and if you can’t keep it real, keep it kawaii!

At very least, it’s a heck of a missed opportunity! I’ve seen abuelas with nerves of steel and feet of flubber dodging traffic to ply their wares - I imagine Tomales Bay would be a welcome respite!

Tourist trap, and way WAY overpriced. Especially at the Marshall Store. a Half dozen raw and a half BBQ'd with a couple beers will set you back $50+. You can go to Rodney's Oyster Hour in Vancouver Canada and order a dozen oysters that have been flown in from Nova Scotia or even as far away as New Zealand forfar less $$$. I lived in Marin for 11 years, and Olema for almost year of that. Oysters here are more than double the price the same oysters (literally) cost in other places in Marin. Yes, granted the atmosphere is amazing, but why do they feel the need to rip people off? There is no transportation or storage costs... these oysters literally come out of the bay a hundred yard out. If you want the same oysters for a dollar each, go to the Bungalow in downtown Mill Valley between 5pm and 6pm instead.
