    I've watched a lot of your videos. Very informative. I watched this video twice and the Apprentice S 1.2m once and decided on looking for apprentice S 1.2m RTF on ebay auction. Found one that had damage to the left aileron and the servo gears were stripped. Hot water took care of the aileron and I bought a new servo (Horizon Hobby). The Apprentice S 1.2m was fully intact. Still factory sealed. Last year, I bought 2 cheap Chinese RC Airplanes. First one, I hand launched, went 10 feet, took a sharp Right turn, the nose dive into the ground. I was a "One and done" for a month. Bought a different Chinese cheap RC plane and had a great deal of trouble trying to fly. So, I was done again for a few months. Your videos convinced me to go with Horizon Hobby and Spektrum. That changed my life. I bought a UMX Sport Cub S 2. It was like a DREAM flying that one. Liked it so much I bought another UMX Sport Cub S 2 in case I needed parts. Second one will be for my grandson this spring. I will only buy Horizon Hobby and Spektrum. I also bought FMS Cessna 182 1400mm, Mini Aeroscout, and UMX Torbo Timber. I'll be looking for an RC Flying Club to join this spring. I've also read up on AMA rules, whatever you call them. It's common sense stuff. My goal is to save money to buy a Valiant. Loved the way it looks. Many, many thanks for your videos. You are an inspiration to so many people who want to get into this hobby.

    I'm surprised that Horizon isn't using DJI type avoidance detection on their trainer planes yet. However, this looks like a great plane for someone coming from rc trucks to start with. I enjoy that there is still a little bit of building with these. I always found that the build is actually a big part of the fun of hobby grade rc

  • @BrianPhillipsRC

  • @BrianPhillipsRC

    If you're only flying them for a few seconds, here's a few tips that WILL help you. 1) Make sure you're CG (center of gravity) is good. If you're NOT sure, make sure it's NOSE heavy. 1/3 to 1/2 back on the wing, then it should hang nose down a bit....if you don't know the exact CG location, no problem, err on the SAFE / Nose heavy side. 2) Get some more DIHEDRAL in your wing. This will help the plane to self right easier. 3) Get enough power too fly. When you give her full throttle, if she doesn't want to get off the ground, try a hand launch, but have some TALL grass if possible to keep the damage down if it doesn't work well. 4) Try a GLIDE TEST before you take her out for a maiden. If it doesn't glide at ALL UP WEIGHT, lose some and try again. If the wing doesn't work well, make the air foil TALLER, and you'll have more drag, but more lift too. You can over do this part, but yo don't want to be flying a KITE ;) Good luck! Can you get shipments from Banggood? Here's a few lower cost options that might be easier for international shipping... Eachine Mini F4U bit.ly/3h3OhNI Mini P-51 bit.ly/2JQDtDj Volantex Sport Cub 500 bit.ly/3c3Yqqn ...I have videos for all of these planes too, if you want to watch ;)

    One is 1.2m and the other is 1.5m - Size is the only real appreciable difference, but the Mini (now just called the 1.2m) is slightly newer tech on the Rx (AR631 now), which makes it a bit easier to modify if you want to add flaps later on, but you won't need to do any of that to enjoy EITHER of these planes. They are both amazing choices. If you twisted my arm, I'd say get the 1.2m if you're flying in a small place, but if you have room, get the 1.5m. It's a LOT more plane for the money, and size makes flying a bit easier for most people. Apprentice bit.ly/2OIjVHd

    Hey everyone just looking for some suggestions here. I had the sport cub s2 for a few months and got the Aeroscout afterward (which by the way is an awesome plane). I'm looking to advance to something else that's a pusher prop type plane or a edf jet. One that comes with AS3X. Reason I prefer a pusher is cause I feel anything with the propeller on the front is bound to break/bend. I don't want the hassle of repairing it all the time. I have a bunch of 3S packs so one that uses those would be great as well. Thank you

    Brian Phillips Well this weekend it lasted 3 flights before it crashed and everyone died. (I was flying it like a fighter jet. 😎) We were taking bets on what would break off first. Would it snap the wings in half or would the tail rip off. Well it was the tail and elevator that said it had enough and down it came. I’ll fix it but will only run it on 3S now with a 12/8 prop. It was just too fast for the airframe.

    You have to get it trimmed to fly level, then just land her, and make the mechanical trim. You basically just watch where the elevator IS when you land, then you can physically match that. If you have to do it more than one, I would be looking for a CG issue....possibly nose or tail heavy.

They're hard to make too...but they are cheaper, Also, you can plug an IC3 or EC3 battery into an XT60 equipped aircraft, since the PINS are the same size ;)

    Hi Brian. You helped me out with some Volanted Sport Cub 500 questions. We bought the plane and my son and I love it and are making great progress. Question! We want a second plane so we can both fly at once. I'm torn between the mini Apprentice and the Turbo Timber UMX 700mm and think those are two good choices unless you have another candidate. The Turbo Timber seems to have the "fun factor" but only seems to get 5-6 minutes and after watching this video, this plane also looks like a lot of fun. (What time of fligh time do you get by the way?) I do like the larger size of the mini because it will be easier to see in the sky but we don't want to take too large a jump from the Volantex but also understand larger planes tend to be easier to fly. Which should we choose as plane #2? Turbo Timber UMX or this mini?? Other? We want something challenging that will grow with us, but not too intimidating either. Beautiful property you have there by the way. We have a very large field to fly in, so should be no worries on the size.

  • @BrianPhillipsRC

    @BrianPhillipsRC

    If you already have a DX8, then the Turbo Timber UMX will be a GREAT choice...if not, you'll talking the price of the most expensive "beginner plane" from below... Beginner Planes, short list Habu STS 70mm RTF - bit.ly/3fRaLj7 Apprentice 1.5m RTF bit.ly/2CfTCBY (This one would be a GREAT plane) Carbon Cub S2 1.3m RTF bit.ly/32UawRn Apprentice Mini RTF bit.ly/2B3VsoR Sport Cub S UMX RTF bit.ly/2OqnYUK Mini AeroScout bit.ly/3myDE8i ...if you get one of these RTF planes, you'll get everything you need, but you won't be using the provided transmitter for the Turbo Timber, more than likely. @@BrianPhillipsRC Thanks Brian! I already have a DXe (retail version with all the switches) that I pretty much got for RealFlight 9 as the Volantex Sport Cub 500 was a rtf with Volantex radio. I figured if I got into the hobby, I would upgrade when I got a second plane to something like a DX6 or DX8. Now, after getting some flight time with our little Volantex Sport Cub 500 (500 mm), which I understand is very similar to the Horizon Sport Cub 2, I'm trying to figure out if I need to continue with a larger trainer, like you listed below, or if my little Volantex is considered enough of a trainer that I can "advance" to the Turbo Timber 700 mm. Soooo, although I know I could make the DXe work (if I get the computer programming cable) I'm inclined to get a bnf version of my next plane and a DX6 or DX8. And, again, don't know what the best choice for plane #2 would be. I spoke with Horizon and they like the idea of a larger plane for me - stability and visibility mainly. They weren't too keen on the Apprentice models because of no flaps, but really liked the Carbon Cub S because you could add flaps later and you can add gps for geofencing. (Does geofencing really work as a safeguard for a plane getting away from me?) Honestly though, all these larger planes are a bit intimidating to me so I gravitate back to the little Turbo Timber if you think I can handle it and IF you think it is still enough of a "trainer" that I can continue to learn to fly without skipping steps. Thanks for any other input.

    Check on a few things... 1) Tx is ON, and in the right model (Assuming you're using a programmable Tx, not the RTF with DXS or DXe) 2) Battery is CHARGED on both Tx and Plane 3) I don't think there is, but the 1.5m USED TO HAVE A POWER SWITCH...does yours have one just under the wing?????????? CHECK, make sure it's ON, if it exists 4) Do you hear the ESC arm? 5) Is your THROTTLE LOW? You have to have the STICK ALL THE WAY DOWN, and if it STILL doesn't ARM, you might need to TRIM IT DOWN A FEW CLICKS, and if you DO, please be CAREFUL. 6) Is the ESC plugged into the Rx ? 7) Is there one or MORE of the THREE wired d/c'ed from the motor to the ESC??? 8) Is it 100% level when you let it go? If NOT, it may not ARM. Also, if it was WINDY, was it rocking around??? Okay, try these things and get back to me (or call Horizon Hobby tech support) if you still can't figure out the issue.

    I assume your dealing with the NEW Apprentice STS, right? I have an old one, so my video might be a bit different,not to mention our production schedule is full. I realize now that I "skipped right over" the binding procedure, since the transmitter was already bound to the plane. Sorry if I led you to believe I had covered that, as I generally do cover it. Here's what you can do to get it bound up to your DXe... 1) Click this link, bit.ly/3eZ6iKW which will take you to the Apprentice STS BNF... 2) Scroll down to "Manuals & Support", and click 3) On the dialogue box that appears, choose "Apprentice STS 1.5m Manual - English" and download it 4) Once downloaded, open the document, and go to page 10 Or follow steps below... 1. Make sure the transmitter is powered off. 2. Make sure the transmitter controls are neutral, the throttle is in the low position, and the aircraft is immobile. 3. Connect the flight battery in the aircraft, then power on the ESC switch. The Flight Controller LED will begin to flash red and blue. 4. On the remote Spektrum receiver that is connected to the flight controller, press and release the bind button. The receiver LED will flash rapidly. 5. Press and hold the trainer button on the top of the transmitter while turning on the power switch. 6. When the receiver binds to the transmitter, the receiver LED will be solid on. Flight controller LED in windshield will also be green when in beginner mode. (without LAS or GPS installed) Once bound the receiver and transmitter should retain their bind for future flights. IMPORTANT: IF THE OPTIONAL GPS MODULE IS INSTALLED the aircraft will not respond to transmitter commands after binding if it cannot acquire a GPS signal. Binding: After binding with the GPS module installed, the aircraft will search for a GPS lock, indicated by the elevator slowly cycling up and down. After acquiring a GPS lock, all fl ight controls will respond normally except throttle. The throttle will be limited, allowing the aircraft to be taxied out to takeoff position on the runway. Set the home position to regain full functioning throttle. See the Powering On With GPS section of this manual for further details. Compass calibration: After binding the fi rst time with the GPS module installed in the aircraft, compass calibration is required. The aircraft will automatically enter the compass calibration sequence after installing the GPS for the fi rst time. This is indicated by the ailerons slowly cycling up and down. The aircraft will not respond to transmitter commands with the GPS module installed until calibration has been completed. See the Compass Calibration section of this manual for further details. Subsequent binding with the GPS module will not require compass calibration. This page outlines the exact binding procedure for with or without GPS module. It's not hard, and you can do it. Here's what you can do to setup the virtual fence... 1) Click this link, bit.ly/3eZ6iKW which will take you to the Apprentice STS BNF... 2) Scroll down to "Manuals & Support", and click 3) On the dialogue box that appears, choose "Apprentice STS 1.5m Action Sheet Multilingual" and download it 4) Once downloaded, open the document, and see what stick position to use to set your desired mode

    You mean, how do I get it to AUTO-LEVEL? I use the beginner mode. I slow the plane down by using the rudder and ailerons to counter each other. This caused the plane to slow down a bit, but it's a bit tricky for a new pilot to pull of. If you want, you can practice a few mistakes high, and see if you can get it to work for you.

    How would you compare this to the Carbon Cub S 1.3 as a first plane?

  • @ederdmann7347

    @ederdmann7347

    4 жыл бұрын

    The Carbon Cub S 1.3 is a great plane. For a beginner I would start with one of the Apprentice models as it’s so stable in the air. They both are. I find the Apprentice easier to take off and land due to the tricycle landing gear. The Cub is a tail dragger and will have pull to the left so you have to give a bit of right rudder on take off and for landings you have to put is on the main gears and then drop the tail or you will nose over. It is a great second plane to learn new skills so you can move up to war birds.

    Brian Phillips if you do add the flaps to the Cub just a heads up remove the paint in the molded pocket on the wing for the flap servo before gluing it or it will peel the paint off and the servo will fall off. Just a light cut with a knife and some tape and and it will come off in one shot. Then glue it to the bare foam.

    I took out my apprentice sts and for whatever reason kept going nose up, turned to the left and refused to turn into the wind, then I couldn't get it to come back down. It was circling to the left and up no matter what I did. I did the only think I could think of at the time and put it into experienced mode and nosed it straight down, about 20 feet before crashing I put it back into beginner, held the stick back and it leveled out turning to the left and landed on its wheels on the track. That was the longest flight I've ever had was about 1min, and that one minute was the longest 1 minute of my life LMAO 😂😂... People yelling at me telling me to turn it away from the tree's, (no shit, like I want to fly it into the tree's), telling me to stop going up so high🤦‍♂️... I was literally holding it to the right and it would not turn into the wind at all, didn't like the idea of it I guess lol. Why did it act this way?, The wind was probably 5mph steady. Afterwards I figured out how to adjust the trimming but still didn't seem to have a good downward elevator, it's was more aggressive on the upward elevator. So up was too much up and down was not enough down.

    With these planes with "stabilization," it is very important they are sitting on LEVEL ground when you switch them ON. It is on power-up, the gyros learn what level is. If you initialize on "crooked" ground, then plane will by default fly in that same "crooked" orientation. Find someone at a club that can help you check your linkages, and radio setup. If you're not near a local club, then maybe post on Craigslist. Create a "dummy ad" that will lure in RC flyers. Once inside the advert, explain upfront you are seeking someone to help you get started in the hobby. Many folks are happy to share their knowledge. (Just re-read your post, and sounds like there are some "experts" around. Find one that is not afraid of a plane with gyros and stabilization. I set my radio so I have a TWO-WAY switch set goes between Beginner or Advanced. Three-way is just an opportunity for confusion. You might want a two-way to switch BEGINNER/INTERMEDIATE.

    yeah, SAFE is very "heavy" on the elevator (or pitch) axis. As you could see in the video, I could barely bring her into a nose down configuration. When you get a better feel for how to deal with things, you'll be less stressed, and it'll be way more fun, and less scary! If in doubt, get a few more "mistakes high" and then turn with the wind. You know how they say "You can always go around" - NOT TRUE...sometimes the batteries are out - but you will start to learn the limits of the aircraft, with or without SAFE. Give it some time, and you'll be irrationally yelling at the new guy to "turn away from the trees" - LOL ;)

    16:30 If your wife has zero RC experience, get her a slow/medium speed ground vehicle so she can learn LEFT/RIGHT coming and going. What about you build her a simple DTF-construction wide/flat bottom airboat? Don't make it too fancy, but just some Frankenstein you throw together, and tell her how easy it was to make, and it's a disposable vehicle. I was so worried about scratching my brand new Apprentice, but now after a few crashes, it has a nice "patina" and it's not so bad when I give it a new scrape. (Big propellers can be intimidating, so maybe a slow wheel-driven vehicle is a good beginner option. A budget rock-crawler? Buy something used that already has plenty of scratches, dings, and glue.) Remember, how anxious you are parking in a busy lot, when you new truck has zero scuffs on it? A thoughtful car salesman will bring a hammer when he "hands over" the keys, and wack the passenger door to give car the first ding!
