The difference between a collector and a hoarder is that a collector has a system of organization as well as keeping it in pristine condition. A hoarder doesn’t care and they’ll have their collectibles next pieces of garbage.

Not necessarily- Collectors and hoarders have the same evolutionary urges to ‘gather’- the same way squirrels will do before the winter season. Hoarders just don’t have the discipline or conscientiousness to determine whether something is worth keeping, or discipline to organize. I have OCD and I love organizing- like my mother; but clutter gives me anxiety. My mother loves to organize her hoard but I constantly get on her because she has so much stuff that it even though it’s organized, it still will never be used!! Also mother’s ‘collection’ can easily turn to hoarding if she doesn’t have time for organizing because she works all the time. The difference is discipline. Discipline to realize that some items will never be used- and discipline to keep what is used in order. My mother’s organized ‘collection’ pisses me off. She doesn’t get to use half of it… so to me it’s just as bad as the hoarding dysfunction even though it’s in proper order.

Never judge a book by its cover as they say. Every back injury is different and certainly some people use that as an excuse to do nothing. From time to time I have back pain but I'm still able to do this and that including cutting the grass or lifting some dumbbells when I'm motivated. I prefer not to bend over but really there's no pain involved. Back injuries can happen to anyone but some people milk it. If you can't do the work then open your wallet and pay someone who can. Sadly you can usually find me laying on the couch because it relieves pressure from my lower back. I need to replace this couch with a recliner.

I'm sorry for what you went through, but it sounds like excuses.

Lol if you have 3 young kids, expect to clean about 1-2 hours MINIMUM daily if you want to keep stuff sufficiently tidy/not gross. Maybe it just takes me a long time bc I'm constantly distracted, start another cleaning project in the middle of a bigger one, I enjoy cleaning most times, as long as I have the energy. But I'm not a perfectionist either by any means. Lol Liam doesn't actually cook so of course he never has a mess but it's such a waste. You can always cook a damn meal then clean up afterwards.. I don't get it unless he can't stand having a little splatter for a few minutes. Here's the thing, these OCD cleaners usually don't have much experience cleaning ACTUAL MESS. That vintage fridge could very well be cleaned but he's not used to cleaning stuff like that. Fridges are the worst to clean though. It's awkward. But my suggestion is using a scrubbing bubbles aerosol foaming cleanser that'll cling to the vertical surfaces, allow it to sit for about 10-15 minutes then scrub it off with scalding water and rough rag. If it's super grungy then a scrub like pink stuff on your wet rag will help your elbow grease go that extra mile. Then you can get whatever's left with all purpose cleaner (Ms Meyers is the best, very effective yet non toxic and beautifully + potently scented like a high end fragrance).

I think that mother and daughter “with OCD” (I have it) are actually just in a sick dynamic where they try to outdo each other. Out sick each other. Out extreme OCD each other. They have a very unhealthy codependency. It’s shown that when. With others who push their limits they both do things they’d “never” do. I found with my own OCD that if I allow myself to feed into the patterns and rituals then it snowballs very fast, but if you force yourself to try to cut them off you do better by a lot. That’s why I think with that pair they snowball with each other and don’t allow each other to grow in a positive way unless they get out of their symbiotic dynamic.

It seems that there's a similar trait or gene running in people on both sides of this spectrum. I've helped several people on the hoarding side too many times to count, because like the obsessive cleaners here, I can and think it's healthier. I've recently helped someone or tried to. I describe it as digging a hole in rocky ground with ten men coming behind who are filling up the hole. After I've cleared and cleaned three rooms, I go back in a week, and the rooms are in the same state, or worse, than before. Are they mocking us?! On the bright side, it drives me to take better care of my environment and discard useless clutter. I won't volunteer again. Cheers.

I feel like Glenn represents the OCD side of me and David represents the ADHD side of me. I'm diagnosed with both, and it's like they fight with each other. The ADHD is like, "Meh, it's fine, you can do it tomorrow! Just relax!" and the OCD is like, "If you don't do this and 1000 other things right this instant you are a hoarder!" I've been both slovenly and extremely tidy at different points in time, depending on which diagnosis is dominant in my mind at a given time.

OOF, I also have both and oh man, ADHD really loves to play into OCD. I obsessively check on stuff, and with my ADHD I can't always trust my memory, because it makes me forgetful af. So it makes me check even more obsessively.

These are my people! I'm a single father of 2 wonderful boys! Just us 3 and they realize how lucky they are to have a dad that is a great cook and O.C.D that dictates the house must be immaculate! My youngest son is a complete contrast by nature. Soon as he gets on the school bus, I head straight to his room!

I was like this for 25 years. You could eat off my floors, eat off my toilet seat, and I washed walls and floors daily. I let it go. My home is still clean but the obsessive cleaning is no more. I still don't have laundry baskets because I wash everything everyday and there's never dishes in my sink but I'll never go back to ocd. It's a total waste of a life.

I wish 2 things 1 this show was still in with new episodes with the original main few ppl and 2 that if it was still on they'd do another season of them.coming to America so I could get some help with my house. It's not near as bad as most of the houses on here, these are like the UK version of hoarder houses but I'd still love their help. I feel like I could finally get my house to the place I want it at with their help. I need a giant skip to throw things out into and I need someone to help me clean all the tiny spaces I never get a chance to clean. Like baseboards and behind my fridge ect.

Fixing one extreme with another extreme - does that work in the long term? It sure is entertaining but both types of people (hoarders & those with OCD) need to learn moderation so they can live healthy lifestyles, because both extremes can be detrimental.

  • @zeldacereza

This show isn’t about “fixing them”. It’s to show the two extremes. The show clearly let’s the OCD and hoarding individuals talk about how much of a struggle their Issue is, and how it takes over their lives and that they are both in need of help. If it was about the the OCD individuals “fixing” the hoarders or vice versa they wouldn’t even bother to show how unhealthy they both are. Lots of them even share their struggles together, and come to understand that even though it seems like their polar opposites, It’s very similar in a lot of ways with how detrimental it is to their lives. I think it benefits them both, but it sure doesn’t fix them. It is mainly for entertainment. The only thing that works long term is therapy.

@@zeldacereza I understand your point, totally. I think they are being pretty good sports, because I could see this being traumatizing for some people with OCD. My mother has OCPD and I couldn't even imagine how she would handle this kind of situation.

One thing that I’ve done with my home that helps tremendously is I have a shower caddy (3 tier plastic shelf) hanging on my bathroom wall that has all of my hair products, nail polish remover etc in it. It keeps it off my sink and organized. In my kitchen I have 3 metal bars with hooks on it and I have that hanging on my wall which holds all of my utensils like spatulas, wooden spoons, pizza cutter etc. keeping them out of and off of my cabinets and easy to grab the right one. Inside my cabinets I have organizing buckets that hold all of my spices so if I need one, I can pull out the entire bucket at once and get the right one. There’s lots of ways to utilize the space you have without being messy.

Hi y’all, as somebody who deals with a tremendous amount of hurt & trauma from obsessive-compulsive disorder, this label is an outrage. It’s really upsetting feeling like the world misunderstands your hardship to this degree. No hate, all love. God alone can truly know people. But the way this comes off is incredibly insensitive to a degree that it is misinformation & slanderous of people’s experience. (Just an example) but it would be like me calling my local business something “catchy” that involves cancer. It’s not a joke & it can really misinform people on a substantial level. Thanks for reading this! Goodnight all.

Wooahh, no it is definitely not a gift, it's making our lives so much harder, filled with anxiety, intrusive thoughts, and man I wash my hands for so long to the point where they crack and dry out. Like it actually hurts. OCD is not a "gift" nobody with OCD enjoys our compulsions, because it's classified as an anxiety based disorder.

39:34 I fail to understand why men find themselves wearing two earrings or even one for that matter? What does it all mean anyway? Just saying they prefer that doesn't explain it to me. That's an easy answer for anything that any of us do. Many years ago I went to an acquaintance house with a friend and we found him wearing a dress in the kitchen. Now ask yourself why did the novel "Lolita" become extremely popular?
