I built an "automatic" rail maintenance vehicle out of an old hacked dragster chassis. You can just let it run by itself every few days and makes rail care a nonissue. Hardest part of designing it and building it was keeping it light and low profile so it would pass under the bridge and not topple over. Since it's the only thing running, I could make it pretty wide. I use a few squirts of WD-40 Specialist Electrical Contact Cleaner in the little reservoir using a little felt pad wick feed system and just let it run for about 10 laps per lane. Works good but it gets hot in one run so you have to let it cool off between lanes. I lowered the gear ratio as far as I could using stock gears for extra torque and to try to ease the load on the motor but, since it runs slow, I don't think there's enough air passing over the motor to cool it sufficiently. I'd like to make one that cleans all the rails on all lanes at once and is battery powered.

Bad ass, get a video of it lol
Thanks for posting this.
This is definitely the right thing to do.1000 percent correct
Amazing track!!! Detroit.
Thanks for the informative video.
Any chance of a plane of the trap would love to replicate this when I build my circuit great video by the way
Nice layout!
I use an acid called one restore for restoring metal parts. I would be tempted to try it
Back in the 1970s we had a HO track cleaner truck, which carried its own liquid and also had a cleaning pad too, do they still make those? And do they function as well as your hand cleaning? Nice looking track with those wide aprons. Hate the magnets in the cars though and the unrealistic scale speed. I built a fully detailed HO 4 lane in the 90s from an old Tyco set I got when I was little in the early 70s. Sure miss those days with friends on race day. I never had a good solution for a 4 lane lap counter, and if I had to do it again, would include current meters on each lane and have separate variable rate transformers for each lane tuned so that all cars ran the same speed. Maybe controlling the controller resistance is a better idea? At the end of the race night we would all take out our semi-truck and trailer and 4 lane race those just for laughs...and we laughed a lot!
Unrelated, but what did you use for the black trim on top of your clear walls? Looks sharp!

Looks like 1/16" rubber edge trim or plastic door edge trim? You can find both on Amazon. I use rubber edge trim, same stuff I use as rub rail on rc boats, available online from Vac-u-boat. Hope this helps ya'll?
What brand of track do you have installed? Looking to get back into this hobby after 50 years plus, layoff looks great by the way.
What are the dimintions of the track and table?
Someday👍👍
Try Libman 100% Copper Scrubbing pads.
Is that cork that you're using along the sides of the track?

No way on cork. Our tracks are made 8" wide including the border
What is the layout of this track and is it offered in a kit?

Hi Lee this was a custom layout we made for ourselves. Its not currently offered as a kit. Thanks
What about a small amount of oxalic acid on a rag.

@@viperscaleracing ok. Is that on a table ready to go, or in pieces, diy assembly? I'd love to see your layout and build it with temp track, and see which one I would get from you guys

Completely plug and play race ready.
Why not just use diluted IPA solvent, since WD40 has solvent anyways.. no greasy residue.
