Safin's Backhand was his most consistant shot, and he was always consistant with it. It was his forehand and movement (post 2005 knee injury and surgery), which really hindered him for the rest of his career. He did hit flat a lot of the time, but he could also create angles at will, could go down the line with ease and could hit through the court crosscourt. He really could do anything with the backhand. Nalbandian is definitely more geared to angles. I would also add Agassi and Kafelnikov.

I disagree. Take a look at the highlights from the Madrid 2011 finals against Nadal. Those were some of the absolutely sickest angles I have ever seen anyone hit with a backhand. Safin did however have a "flatter" backhand which made for a faster strike when hit with consistency. And Nalbandian is just a class act and a natural talent. His backhand has somewhat of a delayed "launch" but when he hits it cross court it's almost impossible to return. But technically, they're all different strokes.

Just wow! This in my opinion is one of the best matches ever. Both players on fire simultaneously. If Tipsarevic played this well consistently, he would easily be in Top 5! Sheer brilliant hitting by both.
Fed was ILL here and still made it to the semi's!

Andrew Healey whenever fed is pushed to his limits this phrase comes out.. He was Ill!! Tats why I was questioning Was he Ill even when safin brought him to his knees in Australian open 2005? Just asking ...😊

I see your point but u can tell fed was not right in this match just by how much he was sweating which is unusual for him, I was a fan of safin but think he wasted a lot of his talent he could of won a lot more than just 2 slams between 2000-2005 .

Andrew Healey Agree with you regarding this one though... Safin was and will always be the most Charismatic player in history of tennis... n yes if it wasnt for his temperamental issues he could have won few more but no regrets ;) Peace...
Remember watching this thriller live on TV, felt like Roger's dominance was finally challenged apart from Rafa, and this was the beginning of the end of the Fedominance.

+Pranav Mohanty Though he was still playing brilliantly in this match. And truthfully, not many people apart from Rafa were able to challenge him at least in the grand slams, as he made the semi-finals of the AO, finals in RG and Wimby and got the trophy at the US open. That's quite a good year, ignoring his standards at the time

Nah he got mono at the end of 2007. Not taking anything away from Djokovic, he might have won either way, but give the man his due. Getting to the semis with that sickness is pretty unbelievable.
Tipsarevic played out of his mind, but Mono-Fed still pulled through!
Finally a version of this match that didn't start off with the first set already over...
What a match, never saw janko playing like this before!
tips was sooo good that day, dang!
WOW...I never saw this... unbelievable shots
partidazo ! grande janko
SUPERB match.
Even I write it 9 years after this match, I still don't know, what determined more about high level of this match: illness of Federer, or absurd play from Tipsarevic... How good was that 😯
probably one of the most dramatic days in Australian Open history - this match went so far over time, that the later scheduled Hewitt/Baghdatis match didn't finish until 4:40am the following morning!!
Recuerdo que cuando me enteré de este resultado no lo podía creer, era raro que Roger tuviera partidos duros en esas instancias.
I remember this was a tremendous, amazing match👏edge of your seat stuff...Fed was the big time man and this upstart wanted to spoil the party!!!.. "Warriors Ball", hats off to both guys👏👏👏 definition of a all time classic!!!!
very hot match!
best match ever
If Janko was 10cm taller he would have been top 5, fantastic match
I don't think I've ever heard Darren Cahill as excited as he was in this match.
Crowd pleasing match
Great match!!!
0:23 could have been one of the greatest points ever

It’s a shame some dumbass yelled “out” for his half a second of fame. Someone should’ve found that guy and thrown him out of the stadium and never allowed him to watch a tennis match again
This match is basically Fed's version of the Djoko-Wawrinka match in 2013.
wow pedazo de partido
i can remember this match was awesome, waw! beautiful exchanges, who cannot dislike?
Oh my goodness. What a guy RF!
Of the scales I loved it
what a great match
Amazing fight by janko..just too unfortunate to have lost such a well fought battle.
That bout with mono really took it out of him in 2008 😢
One of the best matches ever. Tipsarevic played like a man possessed. I'm a Fed fan but I remember when live back then I kinda rooted for Janko. Testament to Roger's badassery.
Check out Tipseravic's interview with Ideas Roadshow
I remember this Match, it was a battle from the get go
Safin's Backhand was his most consistant shot, and he was always consistant with it.
Where did you download the espn version of this match? I really want it, I only have the match in a weird language in eurosport...thanks =)
I can't tell if Roger played kinda bad or Tipsarevic played amazing. I think the latter.
Tipi would have beaten Rafa at this level

Tipsarevic was such a good sport about that whole ordeal at 0:44
Fed is the favourite against everybody because he's the most admired player ever. Even in matches where Fed plays a home player he is still equally admired to the crowd.
Janko played a perfect match, flawless. And still lost. Roger was too much during those years. great display by Janko, amazing tennis.
What ever happened to Tipsarevic? He was playing outta his mind in this match. If I had watched this back in 2008, I would have thought he has a very bright future ahead of him. He was a very well rounded player in this match, almost matching Federer in every department except power. He's always been on the radar since, but I really haven't seen him win many titles.

Well he got injured so that's why he hasn't played this year. But he is a great, consistent player usually in the top 20.
@2:20 you can just see how crazy of a shot that is, because Federer is looking crosscourt faking out Tipsarevic, and then hits a winner down the line....incredibly hard to do! Simply Brilliant!!!
Extraordinary shot making from both players. I was dumbstruck by Tipsarevic's skill and tenacity. A shame both players couldn't have won.
Wow. Tipsarevic played a remarkable match and may well have won nowadays when fifth sets are decided by a 10pt tiebreak
@ 3:45 That's such a beautiful backhand down the line from Tipsarevic!! Nalbandian and Safin would approve of that!!
So when Fed played Monfils at the FO last year (and in 09) Gael got more support? It was pretty even. The French fans love Roger like their own. Logic and reason states that Fed is the most popular in most tournaments he plays at, and whenever he plays a home player he gets better support against them than most others.
Tipsarevic was among best Juniors in the World, before he got Pro ,also was bigger Talent than Djokovic.

Yeah but u might wanna compare their statistics of what htey achieved for the last few years XD> Tipsarevic is good, but he's not there. This match was good cuz he was going beast mode. But at the same time, federer is also going god mode. So there's nothing u can do. Tipsarevic might have greater talent, but he ain't utilizing them, Djokovic is the big man on tour now.

Jay Chung yeah i didnt. I was saying this match specifically. Just shows you how hard it is to beat Federer. I dont mind my comment be ignorant. :)
best mach from tipsarevic in his carrer
17:46 HAD ENOUGH!
3:57 awesome backhand offensive shot
Fed was soooo fast and confident in his prime, even with mono...i miss that fed
Janko is so charismatic guy. The Novak friend. His play was here out of my mind!
He was the king of the court
21:07 that Jack-Knife tho lol Just beautiful
Janko Tipsarevic is another case similar to Roddick, players with a potential to win multiple grand slams but injuries and inconsistency never let them take off any further.
where can i find full match?
Federer hair looks so fresh in this game!
@andydufresne87 Thank you!
Federer’s invincibility shield started to shatter here.
Tipsarevic would be GOAT if he plays like this all the time.
5:10 I think this was one of the worst line calls I've ever seen. Both linesman and umpire said it was out, and it didn't even touch the line FROM THE INSIDE! I mean I understand that one of them could make a mistake, but TWO of them, and BY THAT SCALE. I mean, it didn't just barely clipped the line with 99% being out, IT WAS 100% IN THE FIELD, not even on the line. Good thing he asked for a challenge and was pissed off at her later on.

Amazing year for AO! Fed vs Tip and Tsonga vs Nadal!
roger you are the best for ever
3:51 awesome!
This match was played indoors; no wonder the shot-making from both ends was heavy and hard..
