History Summarized: Neoclassical Architecture

You asked, I deliver: the Neoclassicism tangent receives the full-video spotlight it deserves.
But there's plenty more architectural and art-historical analysis where that came from. So if this kind of thing seems fun, please comment and let me know!
SOURCES & Further Reading: "Francesco's Venice" by Francesco Da Mosto, "A History of Venice" by John Julius Norwich, "Renaissance Architecture" via Britannica, and many many many hours spent staring at buildings in Italy.

This is what makes the OSP videos worth watching, I feel. Not just Blue but Red also. When they put together a video about something they want to talk about, they put the effort into doing it in a way to tell us WHY they like that topic and WHAT about it we should look at. The topics might bounce around quite a bit, but they're always interesting because it's interesting *to them*. The enthusiasm comes through, and that can make a script or concept which seems boring actually... be fun.

wich one and wich building? you know that the library of alexandria wasnt one building and that it was burned down several times. The Romans, the Jews, the christians and the muslims all burned down a version of the library of Alexandria. Al Murry the english stand up comedian has a joke about, how to spot a bougiour uneducated snop. its basicly just hearing who cant stop speaking about the library without knowing anything about the library. Ceasar famously burned down the library, but the movie "Agora", with Rachel Weisz, is set in the library in the 4th century. Hero of Alexandria the most famous professor at the library died in the year 70, around 100 years after Ceasar burned down the library.

So, we did not, in fact, lose very much of the literature that was stored there. WE lost some original scrolls and manuscripts, but we have copies of most of it in other places. It would be possible to recreate almost their entire catalog of knowledge in a new library of Alexandria building at any point. Side note - burning down the Library was pretty much a must for any burgeoning religion, a true sign that they'd 'made it' as a faith. XD

It's not just Washington DC and European government buildings that use neoclassical architecture to evoke classical sentiments, you can also see it in several locations throughout Star Wars. Like the City of Theed on Naboo has lots of neoclassical architecture because Lucas wanted to commutate to the viewer what the planet of Naboo is all about democracy. He knows many of us subconsciously associate such architecture with Rome and the ideas it represented and by packing the Theed with such architecture, we associate it and Padme with republics and democracy. It's a fantastic example of Lucas using the setting to visually convey sentiments without even having to explicitly say them. This goes even further because building off the the sentiments, themes can now be conveyed thanks to what the architecture represents. Naboo and Padme represent the last ideals of democracy in an increasingly corrupt Republic. Naboo is attacked by the Trade Federation (as a proxy for the Sith) so we can interpret this as an attack on democracy. Not only that, this first film is preview for what will happen later in the Prequels when the Sith truly destroy the Republic and democracy is defeated. Lucas basically told us what the prequels were going to be all about and established key characterizations all with the help of architecture. It's also no wonder that neoclassical architecture only appeared in the prequels because that was the only time of democracy. Lucas didn't have any such architecture in the OT because there was no democracy, only Imperial oppression and he needed to communicate that again with the setting.

Interesting definition of Baroque, I never thought about it, but he is quite right.😂 Apart from the fact that Neoclassicism is a movement of the late 18th century - 19th century, but I understand what Blue meant when he used the word "Neoclassicism". I would say Classicism instead of Neoclassicism, because it was Greco-Roman architecture +drama+decoration. But in the end, Neoclassicism or Classicism, what is important is that Blue is always so enjoyable when he is deep into a topic 😍

Take a look at modern Washington DC, note that all the neo-classical buildings and monuments date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. None of the monuments or government building built since about thd 1940s have been in neo-classical style, but rather have almost exclusively been built in a style known, and no I am not making this up, "Brutalism". You know, the style of flat unadorned concrete, small windows, and plain box style buildings? That and what I think is termed neo-modern (lots of plain, flat, unadorned glass and steel) are heavily favored by architects and design committees, whereas the average person prefers, when surveyed, styles like neo-classical (especially for government buildings), neo-gothic, and art neuvo (I think is the name) styles (think Gotham City for neo-gothic and think Metropolis for art neuvo). All architectural styles that have been heavily out of favor among architects since the mid 20th century...

I don't think ANYONE would expect videos purely about architecture from a channel (or, well, half of a channel) which has exclusively been about history so far, but...I really like this! I'm usually kinda "meh" about architecture, but you really managed to get me REALLY EXCITED about it here, and I think that's precisely what OSP has always been about, from the very beginning! So yeah, I strongly support more architecture videos (...no pun intended).

I just love this deconstruction of this sort of stuff, it fuels my soul and excites the mind. You have also sparked my interest and love of domes.

10:39, this reminds me of a bride that used to exist in my hometown. This case it is a library and temple, as a tower on a bridge. Unfortunately they filled in the river to make roads and it’s now just a tower with no internal floors. The tower was from 1496, in Yangzhou China.
