The 44 carbine was my first deer rifle. My dad used his .270. Us kids got what he brought back from Japan, the 44 and a couple 99s. They were pretty heavy to us skinny kids hiking through the drizzly snowy hills of Pennsylvania.
I remember reading a magazine article from the early 50s where 2 guys tried to blow up an "Arisaka" with overloads. They had to end the experiment when the cartridge case brazed the bolt closed without blowing up the action.
I do so love how much more comfortable y'all seem in front of the camera the longer the show goes. Your senses of humor in these later episodes have made an incredibly informative and interesting show that much more enjoyable. My sincerest gratitude to all the people involved in producing this most excellent show!

I own a Type 44 and a few Type 38 carbines. Honestly, they are some of the best trench rifles I have ever seen. Compact, rugged, accurate, and very well balanced. Fantastic rifles through and through, just like the long rifle.

Glad to hear you agree
My father brought one of these carbines back from the Phillipines and used it for many years as a deer rifle in NW Pennsylvania. I used it to take several whitetail deer, and found that it was very effective. I also appreciated that it was wonderfully short and easy to get through heavy brush with. My only complaint ever was with the Norma ammo then available. Their cartridge was obviously loaded for the longer rifle version and used a fairly slow-burning powder. In the carbine this produced excessive muzzle flash and loud report. Also, as I note in a reply to a comment below, Norma tended to undersize the cases which could lead to case-failure in models produced late in the war. I hope Privi has deviated from that.

One of your best video, have and shoot my type 38 carbine one of my favorites!
I've been waiting for you guys to use "Yuki no Shingun" as a background track since the Type 30. Glad to hear it here. =] Excellent video, I wish these carbines were a little more common on the surplus market. Wouldn't mind adding one to the collection.
LOL One of my Favorite episodes . Keep up great work Love to see the Type 99 !
I was excited to shoot my type 38 and was pleased with its accuracy but surprised to see a straight case when I ejected the round. That cartridge was necked when it went in, for sure. It turned out that it had been rechambered for 6.5x257 Roberts. it's a neat wildcat but I needed to buy another Type 38.
Best one yet! Love you guys.

Love your vids! Thanks for all the information, dunno what else to say. Being a gun know-it-all it is refreshing to learn new stuff about military small arms!... Have you done a ww2 series yet? Buddy of mine back in the deer woods of Michigan grew up on one of these 38 carbines, intact MUM. I was "stuck with" a nice K98k to lug around. Still envy that ol Type 38, and the 6.5 Arisaka round (very effective in reducing the local deer population)... it, like my Mauser, was a Dad-vet bringback...
I have a Type 38 carbine in beautiful condition and that Type 30 bayonet , and the blade looks brand new and one of the sharpest things I've ever felt !

Thank you I acquired my Fathers 6.5 long and carbine and 7.7 Rifles when he passed away in 2010 and I used the 6.5 carbine as a teen to hunt with and I am here to tell ya it will kill with a nasty wound but nicer to pack around in the brush then the long rifles,,, Really thanks for all the great info ....
I have to say, the 44's bayonet mount screams one word - beefy. And since I am not a big an of built-in bayonets, she's not my cup of tea to be honest. I bet if - and this comes from historical facts - the Korean freedom fighters got their hands on both the 38 and 44 carbine, I'd say they'd prefer the 38. Shorter and lighter than what they usually pick up - the normal 38's - who would hate that honestly? Thank you again for an amazing episode!Jack from South Korea.P.S.) Yes the Japanese REALLY loved stabby-stabby actions with everything. I might as well get one and re-barrel it for 5.56...
I enjoy these videos so much.

20+ years ago I bought one of the type 38 carbines from my neighbors widow. I used it as a ranch rifle carrying it in my truck, I found it to be handy and accurate with in it's limitations. It came with a rubberized sling which I understand was the way he captured it.
Have one of these, all matching, small light, low recoil very accurate, bolts slower then a turned down Mauser carbine
Love it

I just bought one on the auction, it was so damm expensive, I paid more than what I paid for my new Sako hunting rifles with the scope.....But it worth the price, and I love it. maybe my favourite carbine among all my WW2 bolt rifles' collection.

Hey Othias do any of your Japanese rifles have the chrysanthemum intact? I know that after WW2 a lot of rifles had their chrysanthemum markings either X'ed out or scrubbed off.
雪の進軍が流れてて良い!!
Another great video! The 6.5x50 cartridge is somewhat light anyway so it should do well in a carbine. I read that the japanese soldiers liked the 38 for its mild recoil. I admit I like it for the same reason. Getting a little old and recoil is starting to hurt. :)

I have arthritis in both of them. Cant shoot off handed worth a darn anyway.
Mae, hope you see this. Try this with the safety. Leave the rifle on safe shoulder the weapon, then see if your thumb can reach, push and roll the safety off. I lightly polished pertinent surfaces to smooth the safeties action, and that operation works much quieter than your standard Mauser safety. I enjoy my type 38 even more, knowing this. Pass that along to everyone you know. Your folks keep up the good work.
RE: Rare short rifle. I saw an action once. A friend's father picked it up while on Okinawa. He was in the Navy. He said he saw lots of crates of new rifles but said he figured it'd be easier to stow the loose action on board ship, so he picked it up. One of his boys had it wedged into a bolt action shotgun stock. I was surprised when I measured the length of the barrel!
Ever thought of attaching the 15 1/2 inch bayonet knife on the end of that short carbine rifle
So is this better at 360 no-scoping in a trench than the Carcano Carbines? also BANZAI!!!!! excellent video as always.

Those Banzai books are incredibly hard to get a hold of. Even back 7 years ago, they were stupid expensive on a limited run. Great source, but it's pure unobtainable.
Something about the look in Othais’ eyes when he talks about how good the Type 44 is at stabbing makes me think he’s speaking from personal experience lol
