I've been a patron for a long time, but I only give the bare minimum. Really wish I had some firearms to loan, those are definitely some great supporters of history right there, the people that loan these rare pieces.

absolutely! I'm dirt poor living in Mexico, so it's not an option yet for me, but C&Rsenal and Forgotten Weapons are earmarked for support ASAP.

It's important to note that when Kijiro Nambu was born, Japan was still using matchlocks. Imagine if John Browning was a pilgrim aboard the Mayflower and got sent forward in time to the late 19th century to understand the sheer disparity in institutional knowledge here when he started working on guns.

Don't want to burst anything but Japan was passed the tanegashimas by 1869. They were Using Chasspot and Enfield-sneiders by that time

The marking on the right side of the gun is a tribute to John Bonham of Led Zeppelin after seeing his 2 hour drum solo at the 1901 concert in Tokyo.

The early models could probably only be used by children as well that have off the charts biometric synchronization with them, rendering the models unusable or berserker if someone else tried to use them.

If i recall I remember reading the Japanese the designer was actually afraid of the weapon malfunctioning, so he built it much stronger than necessary, this isn't uncommon either, as this was even the case for a lot of early pre 20th Century Semi Auto Rifle designs. Remember Semi Automatic pistols were still relatively new onto the scene. It is why the Type A is such a better stronger version of the Nambu despite being an earlier version, the later versions were less reliable, weaker action and prone to warring out quicker as it was found the Type A's strong points were just unnecessary, for the same reasons it's mentioned in the video, and on top of that it made production cost for the weapon much cheaper.

"All the Ruger target pistols were based off the Nambu." Well that explains by they are so hard to dissemble.. Apparently its in the family.

I know Ian did a video about the Baby-Nambu and he told the story of a japanese army doctor who carried one for 20 years without firing it even once. Oh, and Othias, don't burn yorself out on this. Every episode, a struggle to maintain reality and determine if he's in the waking world or the sleeping one. Though, it looks like he got some sleep before this one; Didn't notice any gigantic tired-man eye cheeks on this one.

Othias has lost alot of weight since the start of the series, bravo dude, you're looking well!

Othias...dude. Being a firearm historian and gunsmith myself I have loved this series from the start. But I will say you are looking a bit stressed my man. Take a little time off to get your family stuff taken care of. I’m pretty sure the true c&rsenal fans will fully understand if you take a little break. I for one will still be here when you come back.

Something tells me he is incapable of taking a break. I think Othais must be a real work horse, dedicated to getting this stuff out. I do sense some excitement that he'll someday be talking about WWII firearms, but that is probably another stressor too. I know they'd hoped to get a bunch done at once, which is super crazy, but that'd allow him to take time off down the road with episodes 'in the can'.

Mabey you could alleviate some of the spaztic fixation with cleared guns if you put a little "All guns have been cleared prior to filming" notification at the start. Great video as always! I love these weird Japanese designs, here in California since so many vets went here post war, Arisakas are by far the most common surplus rifles at the gunshow by me.

Wonderful episode. Bruno's animations are getting top notch. I hope you don't burn out...

They had experience with C96 pistols. It had a powerful cartridge. They made a very conscious choice to go for recoil control.

Out of all the channels I give money to, because of the niche and amount of subs, I'd say they stretch patron dollars farther than any other. Every dollar really does matter with this channel.

In defense of the 8mm Nambu round, the .32 ACP was establishing itself as a useable military cartridge at the time, and the 8mm Nambu goes a bit faster than that JMB cartridge design which I feel made it adequate for the job it was intended for. Edit: VA appointment at 1500hrs 13 Feb, yay~!

Markius Fox 8mm Nambu is actually a lot and not just a bit more powerful than .32 ACP. Slightly higher muzzle velocity and much heavier bullet. But then again, .32 ACP was never intended to be a military cartridge and it was used mostly a substitute standard rather than actual standard. .32 ACP pistols were cheap and available, so they were used both in WW1 and WW2. JMB's idea for a military autoloading cartridge at the time were 9mm Browning Long (Europe/FN) and .38 ACP (US/Colt). Both were more powerful than 8mm Nambu, although the former only moderately so.

Why then 8mm is considered a weak ass cartridge when 32 ACP is so well respected?

I like the back recoil plate. The circle and hatch marks of the back look very similar to the rifle safely.

As a non-American that was not close to any gun community, I am always suprised when Othais said some gun was stereotypically 'bad'. I mean it just look robust and powerful, especially considering its age.

To add further confusion to the naming of these three pistols, from what I can gather Japanese-language sources don't seem to share the "Type A" / "Type A Modified" / "Type B" split. Instead we have what translates to "Large-Model kou" / "Large-Model otsu" / "Small-Model". The suffixes kou and otsu are roughly equivalent to A and B, though it depends on how much you want to translate or be more of a purist. You'll find the same "not alphabet" system used for variants of military things in general too (kou/otsu/hei/tei/...). The part that's inconsistent is it seems(!) that English sources may have misinterpreted these as the model name itself, and then also applied kou/A to both large pistols, and moved otsu/B to the small one. It seems like one of those so-common examples from this time period where a gun didn't really have a "proper" name, but more like a series of descriptors. That is to say, Nambu (designer) Large-Model (descriptor) otsu/B (iteration). I don't want to claim to be the ultimate authority on this or anything, it's just what I've been able to gather, but there are certainly a LOT of foreign names we've misnamed in English and all take for granted to be correct.

The problem with the Type 14 having poor reliability has to be dependent on the year of make. If it's anything between 1927-1938 are considered pretty well made and I do in fact used to fire a fair share of my friend's pre-war Nambu (His did not have the enlarged trigger guard) and my friend's grandfather war trophy from Okinawa which was a 1944 Type 14 he got from a surrendering soldier who took it from his dead officer. We took those two one day to the range (We're all friends) and the pre-war ones fired very nicely cycling though about 72 rounds combined among 4 people while the damn stupid war time Type 14 can't even handle past 15 rounds before the entire recoil spring deformed. We brought a reproduction, stronger one and changed it on the spot (Took us about 45 mins as we're at a range near a gun shop in Colorado) and after firing another 20 rounds, the magazine latch broke and the magazine keeps wanting to fall out and we stopped firing the gun. What a useless piece of crap the war time Japanese weapons are...

Another great episode guys! PLEASE, turn down the brightness levels in the post processing. The video footage of you is way way blown out. I know you gotta keep the light bright so we can see the guns, just something to consider. Maybe keep the levels normal , and use the bright setting when you are doing your close ups.

Lax safety. Why wasn't the gun cleared every time it was even referenced? Bruno needs to add a clearing animation during the x-ray view. (It's a joke people)

What is odd is that you'd think SJW's would be the ones that get angry when they don't see a firearm cleared on a youtube video, but, SJW's don't know how a firearm operates and wouldn't understand firearm safety to begin with... So, who _are_ these people that get upset? I doubt someone that doesn't know how a firearm works owns a Papa Nambu and is following along at home doing the takedown (hey, he didn't tell me to clear my rare pistol first!).

Meh, I point my guns in dangerous directions all the time, it’s the only way to clean and disassemble them. You can break any one firearm rule, NEVER break two, (try to never break even one rule but it is impossible to never do, simply act like a grown up human with a drivers license and a credit card).

Although you do have a point. Crybabies who freak out when a KZreadr points a gun at the screen or doesn’t danger check his gun 17 times every four seconds should follow rule 5, Never Touch A Gun.

I personally think the cartridge is fine for the pistol. .380 is regularly still made with locking pistols. And .380-.45acp has similar one shot stop stats from police.

32:13 The nomenclature crossover is especially amusing because historically, the only organization the Imperial Japanese Army hated more than the enemy (whoever the enemy might have been at any particular time) was the Imperial Japanese Navy, and vice versa. Also, feels like a Lahti? I admit I haven't handled a Papa, only the later Type 14, but c'mon, there's no way a Nambu weighs 45 pounds. :) (I love my Lahti, but ye gods, I swear I have rifles that don't weigh as much.)

Have you considered "Co-Branding", I think the term is with RIA or Julia to get some of the weapons for the episodes? Where they would work with the consignor for you to be able to use the firearm for an episode and you would give it's auction listing in the credits like Ian does?

I think the biggest issue with the cartridge is the size. It is a rather long cartridge for a rather low velocity. The main issue with the length is the way they sit in the magazine. They are all kind of tilted up, resting on each other in a very awkward manor. If you get any dirt in that magazine, it locks up. It seems that cartridge was the main weak link to the whole system, and not just due too the meh power.

It struck me: With machineguns such as Lewis, Hotchkiss and Maxim clones that you had covered in previous videos, is there any chance that you sometime will get a look at Schwarzlose M.7?

Master of Helium he did get one into a light box some time ago (or it appears that is what happened), but that was most likely a museum piece. Museum pieces are not allowed to be used for firing, so that means that it’ll take quite sometime (remember, there isn’t just someone with millions of those things, and willing to loan them out to some KZread channel). Maybe the new “Squib” series would alleviate some of those requests, but just keep your fingers crossed.

It would be cool to have a copy to test 8mm Nambu +P rounds.

If the rounds hadn't been bottlenecked and packed with more powder, 8mm Nambu could have been an effective round, but I doubt you'd still need a locked breech. But it would have made more sense instead of what they had. Though it's a refined gun nonetheless 👍

At least with RIA, you'll know you're getting a legitimate specimen. Won't have to jump through as many hoops to get detailed pictures and provenance as you would with other sources.

Not a gun owner, but perhaps it's because they don't clean them often enough? I've heard they're difficult to disassemble for cleaning, and if something's difficult, the natural human thing to do is to not do it.

How did people figure what Mark to put on the gun sights can anybody referred me to any good online article or explain to me how they figured out the Range of cartridge and then how this information was used to create the markings on a rifle sights so basically asking how did people create rifle sights and how they work

Two "rants" in one episode? I guess this episode was produced shortly after another ris in viewership. I started watching this series a few years ago, but got lost. Now I'm back, trying to catch up again, and I definitely noticed a pattern to the rants.

Othias please do take a break and relax. We all want to hear your information on your better days. Besides, I bet you finish your Japanese guns, mabey you can do some collaborations with Ian or someone for a fun episode. We are all waiting for certain guns and you know which ones we want so take a break, do a favorite of your’s or a popular one so that we can give you more of our guns and money. P.S. I’m still hauling in subscribers since many of my friends like this stuff so best of luck on finding that fedorav and Farquhar. Also do convince Indy and a few fans to come shoot with you sometime cause I’m sure there won’t be the 8,000 remaining subscribers waiting there for you.

Kijiro Nambu is definitely another great in firearms design. Especially considering that as noted his design is still in use at least in form factor. To think W. Ruger copied many of good features but failed on the magazine release on MK 1 and MK 2. In this respect K. Nambu was ahead of most firearms designers of time. I think that was due to the norm and expected use wasn't changing magazines though plus W. Ruger wasn't always the most pro firearms as others. (IMHO)

Stephen Outdoors Apparently already done by the Japanese in the 1930s. There is evidence that the military loading was upgraded, which gave about 10% more muzzle velocity (325 m/s for the Type 14, 305 m/s for the shorter-barreled Type 94).
