Please as an American with Sicilian blood, blood that has been lost to time, make a documentary hours long. This was exquisitely well done. It is EXTREMELY difficult to find 'good' information about 'Isola del sole' that is not tainted or bias in a particular direction. I can trace my family heritage to roughly the 1800's to Sicily. As a child always I was fascinated with this Island, and the one ting that stands out is hearing the language, compared to main land Italy, sounding very different. Learn Sicily; You have re ignited an old passion for this beautiful Islands rich in history that I feel in my blood and soul and am truly interested in information that is unbias, as you seem to present it. THANK YOU 'LEARN SICILIAN', from the heart.

The origin of Elymians is mysterious! Some say that they were coming from the city of Troy and some from south France. Siculi from East Europe gave their name to the island. As regards the Phenicians, they only created some branches on the coast before being chased out by the Greeks
Thanks for this videos, because my grandparents came from Taramino, but I never met them, because they passed away at a young age.

Sicily is at the heart of Italy as Piemonte, Veneto, Napoli, Calabria and all the rest is at the core of the identity of ‘Italian-ness’. Sicily is Roman, Greek with its Norman influence. The nature of the early tribes is nearly unknown - the Sicani, Elymian, Siculi. Rome at the center of Italy conquered the lands of the peninsula, first and for obvious reason, and went directly to its nearest island land mass, Sicilia. Sicily has been at the heart of Roman culture and the various conquerers of Rome, Napoli and all the other regions since the inception and idea of an ‘Italy’. All the Roman and medieval scholars and historians have written this. Sicily has a regional identity, yes, as does every region of Italy. Sicily’s is mediterranean while Piemonte’s is Gaulic, as Lombardia’s was Longobardi, Germanic. Italy, like all of Europe is one of tribes and conquering peoples, acculturations, adaptations. Read what the great modern Italian historian and journalist Luigi Barzini says of Sicily in his landmark book, The Italians.. And of course, it is noteworthy that Dante himself, the instigator of the modern Italian language took his cue outright from the Sicilian School of poets as he began to form his literature in the vulgaris. As well, of the greatest of Italian writers they happen to be from Sicily - Luigi Pirandello, Leonardo Sciascia, Quasimodo, Bufalino, the poet Lucio Piccolo who the Genovese great Eugenio Montale hailed and brought to light. Then there is the great Italian writer from provincia di Catania, Giovanni Verga, whose text is the basis of one the great operas of Pietro Mascagni, ‘Cavalleria Rusticana’. Vincenzo Bellini the great opera composer is iconic in the world of Italian music. And the list goes on and on and on.

Yes, the ancient Carthaginians, a Phoenician people from what is now modern-day Lebanon founded the empire in what is now modern-day Tunisia and battled the native Berbers winning rule from the Greeks in Sicily from about 827 for nearly 200 years of a 3000+ year history, especially in the western part of Sicily. The Roman Punic wars are the subject of this empire. As for Spain, the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies under the Spanish branch of the Borbone was an empire extending from Napoli southward including the island Sicily and under Spanish rule. These were rulers of royal dynasties, who followed the brief rule of the Angevins (French), for hundreds of years leading up to the Risorgimento. As for Spanish emigration, Napoli was a destination more than Sicily. The ruling Bourbon Kings also for that matter married into Austrian families yet the culture and people of Sicily was not Iberic during this rule. The histories of all European city-states is complex and diverse yet there are core ancient peoples, core societies and culture which make for a larger constant.

As someone deeply interested in history and committed to practical reasoning, I can only observe that Africa and Sicily are relatively close. Accepting the idea that there were no African (Moorish) visitors to Sicily that helped shape the culture of Sicily during that period is challenging. There is an untold aspect of this story. In ancient times, travel across the Mediterranean was expected, with people, goods, and ideas moving between Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. This would have included individuals or groups from Africa traveling to Sicily for trade, exploration, or other reasons. So it's highly likely that there were Africans in Sicily during various historical periods, even if specific records or accounts may not have been preserved or widely recognized.

Of course, two hundred years of rule. The Moors brought new plants, a great knowledge of irrigation, and great art (see Palermo), among other things. Sicilian cuisine and language was influenced by the Moors.

No mention of the influence of the Carthaginians that took over Sicily for a long time before the Roman’s were able to get them out of there? Why?

andrea vinci Dude what are you on about? Of course Sicily is part of Italy, and I tell you more, it is an autonomous region of Italy ( regione a statuto speciale ), which enables it to have more freedom in certain matters (finances for example ), a colony would be glad just to be represented in Parliament. Also what false vote are you talking about? The one in 1860? Well if it is indeed false, than why when Garibaldi and his companions arrived in marsala they could count on some local volunteers help ? And it was not only a limited thing, all the island was on his side. If they wanted to, they could have sides with the Borbone, and ”protect” the island with them. Yes there were some seccionist movement, as there are in other regions (Veneto for instance ) but don't you think that if we really wanted to be completely independent, we would have done something serious in 160 years ? Sincerely, a very annoyed sicilian
