History of England - Fire and Swords - Part 2 - Extra History

📜 History of England: Fire and Swords - On the 26th of August,1346, Philip's army drew near the English force. The French were strung out for miles. Phillip's best commanders advised caution: put on those comfy jim-jams the Queen gave you last Christmas, don the royal slippers, get a goodnight's snooze, and let everyone catch up, then drown the English in a river of their own blood after a light breakfast. But Phillip looked upon the current puny size of the English army, and ordered the attack anyway...

King John of Bohemia was once challenged to a duel by king Casimir of Poland to a duel for the right to the Polish crown (which was contested at the time). Casimir knew that John is very chivalrous and wouldn't refuse an honorable duel, despite being blind. And he didn't. He just set one small rule. To make the duel fair, Casimir had to gouge out his own eyes. Casimir backed down.

Hey guys! I actually had the privilege of doing my MA dissertation on this period, and I think you did a great job of boiling it down to an easily digestable quick video. The bit about Edward III's 'teaching self reliance' is very amusing, especially in the context of 'eh, I've got other sons'. One slight quibble I have is that Philip VI really wasn't in control of the French army at Crecy. In large part, the large French force arrived piecemeal and pretty much went straight into it.

The crossbowmen of the French army were actually Genoese crossbowmen, the best armed and trained crossbowmen on the continent. They would usually fight behind big Pavese shields, but due to a logistic disaster made by the French generals, not only they deployed the crossbowmen without their shields in a disadvantegeous position, but the rain also soaked the strings of their weapons, thus rendering them completely useless.

The battle of Crecy was actually even more of a French F§€£* up. They basically assumed they would win to the point of forcing their crossbow men went into the field without an essential piece of their equipment. A large shield which they would hide behind. This was after they were forced to stand in the rain, with their crossbows. Funny thing about the drawstring of a crossbow is that its quite complex to take off a crossbow. You know what the English archers did? Have their drawstrings under their helmets. Basically the longbowmen were able to massacre the French army almost at their leisure. The casualty count was tens of thousands of French knights and men at arms dead and wounded versus maybe a few hundred dead English troops. The battle basically made cavalry defunct on the battlefield for a few hundred years.
