Dinajpur was once a part of Pundravardhan. Devkot, capital of Lucknow, was located 11 miles south of Dinajpur Sadar.

Dinajpur municipality was established in 1856. It is one of the earliest 40 municipalities of Bengal. The people of Dinajpur district spontaneously participated in the Tevaga movement of 1946-47.
At the time of Partition in 1947, a large part of Dinajpur was transferred to West Bengal and was named Paschim Dinajpur district. In 1984, two sub-divisions of Dinajpur, Thakurgaon and Panchagarh, became separate districts.
Thakurgaon, Panchagarh and Nilphamari districts are situated on the north of Dinajpur district, Jaipurhat district and West Bengal on the south, Rangpur and Nilphamari districts on the east and North and South Dinajpur districts of West Bengal state of India on the west. The total area of ​​this district is about 3438 square kilometers.
The population of Dinajpur district is 26,42,850 people. Santal, Onrao, Mahli, Malpahari, Kol etc. tribal communities live in Dinajpur district.
