Historically Interesting Counts in CK3's Holy Roman Empire
In this video, we are looking at historically interesting minor characters and the accuracy of their portrayal in Crusader Kings' Holy Roman Empire.
We wanted to cover durable noble houses that were still small in 1066, like the houses Habsburg, Welf and Wittelsbach on the one hand, and also talk about some lesser known characters with intriguing backstories that are also featured in the game.
We are very grateful for questions, comments, shares, likes and subscriptions.

Couple of other interesting characters you’ll find in south west HRE are the count of zollern who is the founder of the Hohenzollern dynasty who later ruled Prussia and the German empire and the count of regensburg is a member of the Hohenstaufen dynasty who were later dukes of Swabia and HRE with Frederick Barbarossa

I played as them and founded Prussia in the game. In 1350s I became a powerhouse that can rival any enemy of mine (including emperor ) and created a new faith named Protestantism and game ended 20 years later. But still one count can get super powerfull and Hohenzollerns are one of the best to do that as history shows it.

Love these CK3 videos! BTW the way the welf guy is called Guelph is that that is just a corruption of the name. This is the same guelph as the "Guelph and the Gibellenes" dispute between house Welf and house Hohenstaufen. This is what they were called in Italy, hence the new name.

@@historyinbits the Duke of Swabia in the game: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudolf_of_Rheinfelden was a rival king or anti-king who claimed emperorship and even won a battle against the Emperor but died next day due to severe wounds. He was buried under a bronze graveslab (unique of its kind in Europe) portraying him with royal regalia and with an inscription saying what a good king he would be. A good target for an alternative-history playthrough.
One count I would recommend people to try out is not technically a vassal of HRE but close is the count of Lübeck (it should be called Ljubice/Lubeka in the timeframe of the game but whatever), Budivoj of the Nakonid dynasty. He starts in the interesting position of being an independent Christian ruler squeezed between Pagan Polabian rulers, Denmark and HRE. It makes the start very flexible. You can swear fealty to the Emperor and with the help of German nobility retake the lands of Obotrites and create the Duchy of Mecklenburg and start your rise to power within HRE. Or you can side with Denmark or remain independent or even revert back to paganism. The choices are endless. BTW, this made me realize one thing about the portrayal of HRE in the game. Lack of parallel authority/entities. Pagan Polabian tribes for a time were functioning separately, regardless of Christian feudal German and Slavic rulers. Sometimes even attempting their own international relations which were used by neighboring rulers before the game's start date.

Your forgot to mention that the successors to Queen Victoria were direct descendants of the Wettin dynasty you mention as well. The Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (also known as Windsor in UK) are in fact Wettin's. Another great house that you find in its infancy at this period is the House of Oldenburg. A family which from 15th century would rule over Denmark, Sweden and Norway (they still are ruling in Denmark and Norway). Their cadets ruling over Russia, Sweden, Greece and recently over UK as Charles is direct agnatic descendant and member of the Oldenburg dynasty.

Been looking through the comments and I haven’t seen anyone mention this but another interesting character I’ve seen is Count Elimar who belongs to the Oldenburg dynasty, because of the useful charts channel talking about the Oldenburg dynasty ruling many kingdoms at some time in history
There are many interpretations to "A.E.I.O.U" but yes it wasn't the motto back then, but it was their motto before they became rulers of Austria so the Austrian definition is probably not the original meaning of it, but could have at a later date been used as one way of understanding it, in german "Alles Erdenreich ist Österreichs Untertan" in english "All earthern kingdom is austrias subject" but the original meaning is thought to be "amor electis, iniustis ordinor ultor" a exerpt from the sentence he used when being crowned "„En, amor electis, iniustis ordinor ultor; sic Fridericus ego mea iura rego." Saying something along the lines of "Observe, by all of your love I was elected, to punish those that are unjust I Friedrich will exert my right to rule" and A. E. I. O. U is basically "By your love I was elected"

One of my favorite characters and playthrough was with Rupert count of Nassau 1066. He is the eldest known ancestor of the House of Nassau dynasty who later ruled England, Scotland, Ireland, Netherlands, and Luxembourg. The current head of the Dynasty is the Grand Duke of Luxembourg and their cadet branch Orange-Nassau is the ruler of The Netherlands.
I know this is in ck3 but if the 769 start date comes out like in ck2, the King of Asturias is a descendant of Emperor Justinian

@@historyinbits definitely need one, you also have the Billungs and a few surprises that people might not recognize as important (like the Welfs) like the Billungs, Ascanians, and a handful of others for example the Chatenois/Lorraine house over in Upper Lorraine (who would become the actual Habsburgs in Austria after the war of Austrian Sucession), or the Savoyards (future kings of Italy), or the Anscarids (Who brought you the Trastamaras, like the Lorrainians, they go by a "easter egg" name de Ivrea) there's quite a few other lesser known ones, because they're either overshadowed by the house everybody knows (Chatenois, Anscarids) or didn't last as long as some of the bigger houses (Billungs, and Ascanians)

I thought for sure you would mention Renart in the duchy of Lausitz. You came very close. House Renart who starts off ruling Spreewald is the featured count in the Crusder Kings 3 cinematic.
There is also the count of Oldenburg, who would later go on to create House Oldenburg which house Glücksburg is a cadet branch of
Do the Carolingian Empire (867) next.
Magnus of Billung, heir to the duke of Saxony, is probably my favorite. He's the maternal grandson of Holy Olav of Norway and Norway being an elective Monarchy... Well it makes for an interesting game. Historically he was the last of the Billungs but his daughter by a princess of Hungary carried an impressive genealogical heritage that would later connect Holy Olaf with the later kings of Norway via Erik IV of Denmarks wife Juta of Saxony of the house of Askanien. Their descendants would eventually become the house of Oldenburg, holding the crowns of Denmark, Russia, Sweden, Greece, and now technically, Britain and the commonwealth monarchies.
Really interesting

Would random little counts and barons reallty declare war on eachother over land claims or is that just a gameplay thing? Hey thanks for this valuable advice, I’ve now created the playlists. Really appreciate the support!
Look into the county of Bouillon. Its current ruler at the 1066 start is related (via marriage?) to Godefroy who will be a leader of the 1st Crusade and the 1st King (Advocate) of Jerusalem and his brother Baldwin who will be the next King of Jerusalem and the 1st Count of the newly founded crusader state Edessa. The both young brothers reside in their father's court, Eustace, Count of Boulogne. Probably it's possible to somehow play it through to actually make them Crusader Kings. If left as-is, they usually end up as unlanded or just petty counts.
I like this look into historically unique and interesting characters that might otherwise get lost in a game this large, you should definitely do more in this vein.
Personally i prefer to try to save houses that historically went extinct and/or lost their land, instead of going rags to riches with the Habsburgs
4:42 We can also a similar logic to claim that King Charles is a successor to the Mongol Empire through the Chagatai line’s connection to the Mughal Emperors of India and Britain claiming that title after deposing the last Mughal Emperor after the Rebellion of 1857.
7:56 wettin dynasty will also in the future come to rule the polish lithuanian commonwealth (the commonwealth held elections where nobles chose the king which they won) but unfortunely due to a rule implemented way before their reign called liberum veto that made it so any noble taking part in parlament could just say they dont allow whatever was discussed and the parlament would be over, made it so that they didnt have much to say, and in the long run made poland a russian protectorate. Wettin dynasty is pretty respected in Poland though, because they tried to save the situation, when the nobles were gone on easter they called the parlament and have written first constitution of europe (and second constitution in the world) which abolished liberum veto and made many more changes. Unfortunely power hungry nobles didnt like losing their powers and formed a confederation and asked russia to intervene, which gave russia pretext to invade and divide poland between them, prussia and austria (not fully, but the partition would spark an uprising, which was defeated and caused the final partition of poland).
What are the songs you used in the background of the video?
Nice vid, could you please add timestamps in future similar videos?
This seems like it might make a good series, provided the game has the content to make that feasible
Although not historicall, Count Otger Renart, of Spreewald in Lausitz, Northern Germany. 1066 start, is the trailer character and his wife Hersent. You can se his dead brother Wilhelm (William) for the first trailer being murdered by another rival count.
Please cover me in the HRE. I was probably scattered across the world as different molecules and atoms so it might be a bit difficult to research.
The Renart and Barenburg houses in 1066 are also pretty cool counts, they are vassals of Lausitz and they are the families portrayed in the CK3 trailers (including the tours and tournaments trailer) and they already have a preset backstory that you can follow, essencially, Otger's younger brother was assassinated by the Barenburgs and that sparked a rivalry for generations between the two families, you can see their story in the trailers
The 1st husband of Matilda of Tuscany: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godfrey_the_Hunchback You can actually marry them if start as his father Godfrey the Bearded of Lower Lorrain in HRE.

Guelf = Welf, just like Willem = Guilhem, the W- transcription of the germanic name seems to be more prevalent in more germanic speaking region of Frankia, while the Gu- transcription seems to have been favored by scribes writing in Latin. De jure is not pronounced as the French de jour. It's either day-joor-ee or dee-yoor-ee.
At the time of Welf I., Welf I., or Welf Welf, was called Welf. Some descendants of the first Welf Welf were also named Welf. Long after the time time of Welf I., the line of Welf Welf was therefore given the name Welfs, making each Welf including Welf I. a Welf Welf. And because more Welfs were named Welf, the first Welf Welf was then called Welf I. But no Welf Welf ever called the Welfs Welfs or called himself Welf Welf, and Welf himself, the first Welf Welf, was only called Welf I. after more Welfs had been named Welf, after him.

Elimar von oldenburg is another. His unbroken male line can be traced to most of the royal families today.
The wettins not only were important in Germany, but also Poland, since three of our kings were Wettins and when the first polish contitution was written, the Wettins were supposed to inherit it, and when Napoleon created the Duchy of Warsaw, the Wettins became dukes of it.
