My first thought, before I watch this video, is to wonder whether, as an enslaved and therefore vulnerable and disempowered person, Sally Hemings was morally capable of giving consent?
I’m sorry nothing drives me crazier than hand waving things away with “well it was acceptable at the time”. Another historian in a podcast (I don’t remember her name) put into the perfect words. “Societies change. However, people don’t” meaning something like a grown man grooming and raping a teenager would have had the same psychologically traumatic effects on Sally Hemings as it would on a modern teenager. (And that isn’t even going into fact that she was literally his property)So just because it was considered ok at the time doesn’t mean it was right or that we should excuse it.

People owning other people is horrible and it really was ingrained in American society, especially in southern states like Jefferson's Virginia. For over a century it was normalized, until the abolitionist movement took off, before that few people batted an eye at the monstrosity of slavery.
I'm not sure how a person "solves" another person. People are humans and humans are complex, flawed creatures. People are going to be people and the times are going to be the time.... people are going to do what they're allowed to do based on the times?🤷♀
