Historical Misconceptions You Probably Still Believe | Trust Me Bro | History Teacher Reacts

Let's face it. A lot of the things we believe from history might be untrue. Some of those things might be major, but many are minor. Either way we should always pursue the truth, right?! Trust Me Bro has a few common historical misconceptions that you might believe. Mr. Terry gets to talk about where these misconceptions come from.

There's so, so many out there! Rather than dive into any of the more common ones that turn up in videos like this, I figured I'd touch on one misconceptions I grew up with that was rudely disabused when I started actually studying history. I grew up at a time when Disney's Davy Crockett series still regularly appeared on television and big stars like John Wayne made epic films on Crockett's last stand at the Alamo, so one of the biggest misconceptions that I had about one of my childhood idols was that Davy went to Texas because he wanted to join the fight for freedom and liberty! While I still harbor hope that those values at least played a part in his decision to go to Texas and ultimately to fight at the Alamo, the reality was a little more complex. For one thing, he was struggling with financial difficulties and saw Texas as an easy way to get good land to provide for his family. However, there was another motive, one that really caught me completely by surprise. In a letter complaining about Andrew Jackson's Indian Removal Policy, Davy wrote, "I have gone So far as to declare that if he martin vanburen is elected that I will leave the united States for I never will live under his kingdom. before I will Submit to his Government I will go to the wildes of Texas." (Letter to Charles Schultz, March 7, 1834). So yeah, another reason he went to Texas was simply because it looked like Van Buren would be elected and he'd rather live in "the wildes of Texas" than under a Van Buren presidency. The guy realllllly didn't like Van Buren.

I love your videos but sometimes when talking about medieval history you get stuff wrong. These are two off the top of my head: You said that maces were bad weapons because they would stick inside armor. This isn't really true. They were good weapons because they would dent armor much better than swords, which couldn't go through almost all plate armor. The mace could easily be retrieved. Maces are also quite small and light. Iirc, you once said that swords were heavy and unwieldy. This is mostly untrue, though some greatswords and zweihanders could be unwieldy. Apparently the average sword from the 10th-15th century weighed 1.3 kg, which is 2.8661 pounds. I recommend watching some video on medieval misconceptions, that might be interesting for you and the viewers.

Let's take the major historic misconceptions: Columbus discovered America. Vikings were Barbarian raiders. The pope is the highest representative of God on earth. Rules in the Torah, Bible and Qu'ran should be treated as god given rules that apply everywhere. And a minor more recent one: Democrats stole the states in the elections. As mentioned above: All of these are misconceptions. The fourth one is a bit tricky, as the rules in the respective texts do make sense in the area they were written in. Eating pig meat in the desert is dangerous at the best of times because the meat rots faster in these conditions. Making a Cordon-Bleu is technically allowed for Jewish believers as the rule was to not mix a childs meat with its mothers milk which grew to not eating dairy and meat products together. Its idea was to always have offspring to continue having meat for the next seasons. And Christians kind of ignore Leviticus in their Old Testament with its vast amount of rules and laws. They even ignore the very simple Ten Commandments, when they like it. "Thou shalt not kill." is kind of a final statement there. Not "Do unto others, if they killed someone.", just "Don't kill. Period.".

Ancient cities were built almost entirely from stone or concrete. Of course, many ancient constructions have survived - Roman roads, aqueducts, the Parthenon, piers, temples, etc. Those were deliberately built to last and so stone or concrete was used. In many ways they were overdesigned (see Practical Engineering for a discussion). But a lot of stuff, especially houses, were built with wood. It is so much easier to work with. It might have been plastered over to suppress fires, fill in the chinks, etc. The stories of fires ravaging ancient Rome are plentiful, including of course the great fire in Nero's reign. They were not raging through stone or adobe, so we know a lot of things were built of wood. However, wooden things exposed to the elements - and barbarian hordes - tend not to last, so what remains are the stone and concrete structures.

Dr. Kellogg ran a sanitarium, and corn flakes were meant to be a healthy meal for his patients. There was a guy who worked for him named Post who stole his recipe and founded Post. So, Kellogg and Post started in the same place, and formed the basis of an insane rivalry that lasted decades. IIRC, Post also used to be a patient at Kellogg's mental ward, and was an assistant to Kellogg's brother who ran the food portion of the sanitarium and fought with his brother for years about whether or not to take corn flakes commercial. Corn flakes were also created semi-accidentally by leaving food overnight or something. Basically, there's a ton of tea when it comes to breakfast cereal, and this should be a season of Ryan Murphy's show Feud or something.

In the time of Gangues Kahn, people would bath and do laundry even during a storm. Kahn, in the Yemulo (SP) wrote it to be against the law to bath or do laundry during a storm, because too many people were being killed if lightning struck too close to them in the water. If lightning struck water a long ways off, you usually are safe, but if it hits within a certain distance, it can kill you.

One thing perhaps worth mentioning about Greek and Roman statues; they often had clothes specifically made for them. Many of the statues that are now white marble nudes were actually painted, clothed and anointed with oils and/or perfumes. Very colourful clothes too, soquite bright all round.

Regarding ninjas, it's also relevant that there were multiple types and roles of ninja, with different members of ninja clans being sent depending on what was needed. For example, for a night mission, typically a ninja dressed as a traveler, often as pilgrims, would map out the area, which would then be memorized by the ninja that actually did the mission, so that light wouldn't be needed. The Ninja were basically spies like James Bond without the BMW, Lotus or other hero car. It wouldn't make sense having a Superstar Superspy whom everybody knows by face and name. Regarding the clothes, I've heard they came from theatre pieces from Japan where westerners thought that's how they look. It was just a stage stereotype like our angels are dressed all in white and have wings or knights have full body plate armour. When we see such a figure we instantly know what it is, even if it's historically nonsense. That's also why Ninjas were displayed in all black.

Also he didn't invent the radio, he came up with a design that he never made, other having come up with similar designs before him. Edison didn't electrocute Topsy the elephant. Nor was it meant to make people afraid of Tesla's work. It actually happened many years after that fictional rivalry was said to happen.

Regarding the roman statues. I get that they look better white, but when we're going to museums, we want to see how those artifacts looked like back then, not how they look now. Also I think it's a good reflection, we might have an amazing marble statue and next to it a painted one, with a sigh saying - yeah, back then it looked like that. Look at those Romans, they too had some shit taste here and there

I think one of the big things that most modern people simply don't realize is that mental capacity -- intelligence, memory, problem solving, even language use -- hasn't changed significantly in tens of thousands of years. The ancients lacked the breadth of knowledge that we have access to, which affected how they interpreted some results, but they had the same drive to understand their world that we do.

I would like Mr Terry to look into tje story of the Kellogg brothers. As far as far as I was informed (from Drink History and The Food thet built America) the brither who was a doctor who had the sanitatarium and was anti masturbation actually took credit for his younger brother's work. The younger brother worked foe him in the kitchen and one day accidentally left some grain out and it fermented. When he rolled it out, it became flakes. It was so popular that the founder of Post stole the idea when he went to visit the sanitarium. The brothers cut ties, and for a whilethey each had ditcereals on the market. When the brothers went to court over it, the rights to Kelloggs went to the younger brother.

There is exactly one good excuse for going the other way on toilet paper: if your cat simply won't stop unrolling your toilet paper otherwise. To be fair on ninjas, they were pretty much spies. The origin for the modern look of ninjas comes from theater, where traditional clothing for stage hands was all black including a black mask. So when a character was assassinated or received information from a ninja, they'd have a stage hand do the action, even if said ninja was later revealed to be one of the major characters in the play.

Wow, I’m surprised I had a lot of thoughts on this video. American Gothic: There’s a really good art video on the history of American Gothic that explains why it was painted, and how it was initially received by the art community and general public. The TLDR was that the guy thought he was painting something that harkened back to his youth and capture what he felt was a simpler bygone time, but also depicted the figures slightly exaggerated with elongated features to echo the gothic window on the house (a style of window out of place and uncommon with the architecture of the time and part of the world). It won best in show in Chicago but the general public thought it was satire making fun of rural midwesterns as backwards and behind the times. Roman Statues: I think that the Roman statues are creepy when viewed in their painted forms is particularly because of the uncanny valley. In white, they appear perfect and capture surprising details. But, the science of paint during the Roman era was very limited, and they only had access to basic color palettes, and (from the perspective of the artists in charge of painting reconstructions) no idea how to blend or add tones to the colors. So when we see these reconstructions we see the exquisite detail of the sculpture, and the color job of a 6 year old with a 6 piece box of crayons. Kellogg: Other people have jumped on here to share about Kellogg, so I will skip the stuff about Post and the Sanatorium, but I will mention two things: 1) He believed that hot meals and meat led to things like sex and violence, because it was the times before we understood nutrition and behavior I guess, so his clinic focused on both vegetarian and cold foods. 2) His brother, after Post ran off to start his breakfast cereal empire using Kellogg’s recipes, begged his brother to take the foods to market, but to add sugar and other ingredients to make them a bit more palatable to general consumers (🥁). He refused, so the Kellogg brother said enough waiting and also stole the recipes to start the Kellogg cereal empire. The brothers would go on to never speak to one another again.

Well, WWE and other organizations scripted the matches. They were meant to have a predetermined outcome, the fake part was the tension and suspense of the whole thing. But no, the athleticism and movements were real. Hulk Hogan tore out back muscles when bodyslamming Andre the Giant. Chris Benoit maintained so many head injuries, CTE is blamed for the reasoning behind why he did what he did. Owen Hart broke his neck and died when falling from near the rafters of the stadium. Just like other contact sports, the physicality is real. Unlike other sports, though, the outcomes are meant to be predetermined.

Regarding "fake" wrestling - currently it's a well known fact that "professional" wrestling is a scripted performance between professionals who go through great efforts to minimize the risks to each other. But it's also historically true that "professional" wrestling WAS fake. There are essentially 2 phases of this in history: - In the late 19th and early 20th century up through the 1930s it was still being presented as a sport, while the outcomes were fixed. This was partly because short, fake matches were safer and because long, real matches didn't draw a crowd as much, but wrestling lost popularity after a series of journalists wrote exposes on the practice in the early 20th century. - From the late 1940s continuing up to the early 1980s it was still being promoted as a sport, but at this point it was in its modern incarnation of being scripted and practiced performances in spite of the dishonest framing as a sport. This fact was obvious to most people, though, leading to the phrase "wrestling is fake" you are familiar with. Famously, Hulk Hogan commented later in life that he had to check before his first fight with Andre "the Giant" to make sure Andre knew it was fake. - In 1989 it was rebranded as "sports entertainment" to avoid sports licensing fees, and they stopped pretending it was a real competition. This is what you're familiar with today. So from a historical perspective - yes, it WAS fake. But from a modern perspective, it's no longer fake because they've become honest about what they're doing. Watching two people portray silly characters doing incredibly athleticism to a silly story is a lot more entertaining than watching two people lie to you that they're competing against each other and then use athleticism to pantomime a fight.

  • @ChrisSantino

One sobering pro wrestling related fact: even in the modern era, the _average life expectancy_ for a pro wrestler, is 54. Hogan, Flair, and the like being 70+? Those are outliers, statistically. Why? Allow me to go into that. First, a lot of professional sports have an off-season. Nfl has it, nba has it, mlb and nhl have it, even cheerleading has it. Even combat sports, like boxing and mma, have medically mandated minimums of 4-6 months between fights for combatants. Professional wrestling, *has no off-season* at all. If youre still early in your career or not suddenly popular, you are also typically managing _your own travel expenses_ as well. A full timer, that would be seeing time in the main event? Those are traveling for *300 days* out of any given calendar year. Coupled with the required athleticism as you pointed out, even one botched move can render someone to some forced down time, end their career, or even life. That set of facts alone, is why im of the opinion that (most) pro wrestlers deserve and earn way more respect than any given ufc card monkey.

One thing: Ninjas today would wear black (at least in cities), because all of the artificial light will make the the dark spots darker and black would be harder to be seen then.

The painted greek and roman statues is another misconception. The white marmor statues weren't painted, or at most they painted the clothes. Why would you use marmor of all stones to paint over it? Even the greek and the romans weren't that lavish!

WWE is real in that the fighting part does really hurt the wrestlers. The part that is 'fake' is that these wrestlers are told to create big shows and drama around that fight much of which are scripted by their employer. What gave WWE a really bad rap was that in the 1990s some matches were indeed fixed for more 'drama' and 'entertainment.'

Surprised he omitted the other thing Helen Keller unfortunately talked about, eugenics. She looked down upon the mentally handicapped and saw burden on society. This was sadly a common stance for people of her era. Talking about paint, this actually is something that effects our view of medieval times as well. Castles didn't have bare stone walls, the would be plastered and brightly painted or adorned with bright tapestries. Even the furniture would've been painted in bold primary colors. The higher status the castle was the more color there would be. I think the biggest historical misconception is the way Native Americans are portrayed. They are presented in an overly homogenized way. Each tribe was vastly different in their cultures, as different as the cultures in the countries in Europe are. Some had massive cities. Our view of Native culture is one that is the result of colonization. They were forced west into a more nomadic lifestyle. In fact, the population of the native tribes was horribly effected by the first European settlers and the spread of diseases is said to have caused an equivalent effect to the black plague in Europe.

*blinks in former pro wrestler* that was unexpected. But uh. Thanks? And maybe think of it like stunt fighting, but make it live theater. Whether it comes out more like the theater version of Rocky or a Steven Seagal movie depends on the talent of the wrestlers. And if it doesn't look as good as a movie, that's in part because a movie has to only make it look good from one angle instead of almost 360, gets endless takes and way more crash pads. We work with what we've got.

Percy Jackson would’ve had a field day with the penny thing 😂 meanwhile Annabeth would’ve corrected him about all this 😂. Also to add to the electric thing, native Americans also had myths about thunder and lightning as well as them finding out that the sun is the center of the universe years before western culture firgured that out.

Great now you have your double check everything as a high school history teacher is not qualified to teach a freshman history class at a community college. Example the Industrial Revolution still saw a very high infant mortality rate. The numbers declined significantly in the 20th century not over a century before as the Industrial Revolution did not mean that medicine instantly took a leap forward.

For the American Gothic picture. The author is dead! If someone says they are father and daughter, it is as much right, as them being husband and wife. As the guy said, the people posing for the picture weren't related in the slightest. If so, then it doesn't make any sense to claim them to be the one or the other, if the picture itself doesn't contain something ruling one of the possibilities out. I hate when authors of stories try to just comment on some story, thinking that is enough to change some lore. Thats lazy. If an author writes something and he doesn't like the interpretation of the readers, the only way, in my opinion, he can change that, is not by some random comment, but by adding content to the story. Otherwise, the author is dead and his interpretation, isn't more valuable than anyone else's!
